Bound states and resonances ofN-particle discrete Schrödinger operator

The existence of bound states and resonances of the Hamiltonian of a system ofN different quantum lattice particles with nonvanishingN-particle short-range interaction is proved. Banach-Saks operators on spaces of continuous functions

Summary Let K be a compact Hausdorff space and let E be a Banach space. We denote by C(K, E) the Banach space of all E-valued continuous functions defined on K, endowed with the supremum norm. We study in this paper Banach-Saks operators defined on C(K, E) spaces. We characterize these operators for a large class of compacts K (the scattered ones), or for a large class of Banach spaces E (the superreflexive ones). We also show by some examples that our theorems can not be extended directly.Partially supported by C.A.I.C.Y.T. grant 0338-84. Manifolds with invariant semi-Riemannian almost product structure

A manifold M with semi-Riemannian almost product structure invariant relative to a transformation group G is considered. 某些查耳酮化合物的发光

本文叙述了两个同质查耳酮系列的合成.一个带有查耳酮中心链(系列Ⅰ),另一个是系列Ⅰ的酯类(系列Ⅱ).研究了每个系列中三种化合物的发光,发现两个系列的所有化合物都能见到发光.系列Ⅰ中的化合物在峰值为360nm处可见到发光,而系Ⅱ列中的化合物未能观测到这一波长的发光.然而,在峰值为470nm处两者均可见到发光.得出的结论是,消除非键电子微扰作用的氢键是系列Ⅰ中的化合物在360nm处出现发光的原因.     

The Post-Hopf-Bifurcation Response of a Loosely Supported Cylinder in an Array Subjected to Cross-Flow. Part II: Theoretical Model and Comparison with Experiments

A nonlinear quasi-steady model for the analysis of the dynamics of a loosely supported cylinder, which takes into account position-dependent nonlinear fluid forces as well as nonuniform flow, is formulated. The model includes an approximation for the equivalent viscous damping associated with energy dissipation on impact at the support. The nonlinear model shows reasonably good agreement with experiments, in predicting the observed bifurcations in the cylinder response. Comparison criteria include the standard orbital plots, time traces and response spectra. A borderline chaotic response is found to be predominant over the test velocity range. In this chaotic regime, the theoretical results were verified via attractor fractal-dimension calculations and saddle orbit distributions; theoretical values of these invariant measures compare reasonably well with their experimental counterparts. Two mechanisms leading to chaos have been identified for this system. The first is a switching mechanism , at the onset of impacting. The second, and more prevalent, is the type I intermittency route to chaos.     

A Practical Solution to a Cargo Loading Problem at Bethlehem Steel

The optimum assignment of structural steel shapes to rail cars is an important logistical problem in the steel industry. In this paper, we discuss an application at Bethlehem Steel that not only involves weight and dimensional constraints, but also customer unloading constraints. The formulation is a generalized bin packing problem which is solved by modifying and extending the first fit decreasing algorithm. The solution algorithm, SOLID (for Structural Optimal Loading IDentification), has been used extensively for one of Bethlehem's high tonnage customers providing very good practical (implementable) results that achieve the desired goals. Bethlehem has enhanced this approach for use with other customers.     

A Tabu Search Approach for Delivering Pet Food and Flour in Switzerland

In this paper, we consider a real-life vehicle routeing problem that occurs in a major Swiss company producing pet food and flour. In contrast with usual hypothetical problems, a large variety of restrictions has to be considered. The main constraints are relative to the accessibility and the time windows at customers, the carrying capacities of vehicles, the total duration of routes and the drivers' breaks. To find good solutions to this problem, we propose two heuristic methods: a fast straightforward insertion procedure and a method based on tabu search techniques. Next, the produced solutions are compared with the routes actually covered by the company. Our outcomes indicate that the total distance travelled can be reduced significantly when such methods are used.     

Resistance of composite flywheel rim to radial tensile stresses from centrifugal forces based on results of pure bending of a rim segment

A method is proposed for evaluating the resistance of a flywheel rim to radial stresses in free rotation. The method is based on loading a rim segment in pure bending and calculating the limiting moment and the corresponding limiting angular velocity. Applicability of the method is substantiated theoretically by investigating the similarity of the radial stress diagrams in rotation and pure bending.
