Non-linear optical spectroscopy of an inhomogeneously broadened resonant transition by means of three-wave mixing

A calculation shows that the dispersion of optical mixing of the type 2ω₁ ? ω₂ provides a new means of determining directly both the longitudinal and transverse relaxation time associated with an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition of materials having very short relaxation times of a picosecond or less.     

Local state probabilities for solvable restricted solid-on-solid models:A n,D n,D n (1) , andA n (1)

The local state probabilities (LSPs) are exactly computed for four hierarchies of solvable lattice models. They are restricted solid-on-solid (RSOS) models whose local states and their adjacent conditions are specified by Dinkin diagrams of typesA _n,D _n,D _n ⁽¹⁾ andA _n ⁽¹⁾ . The LSPs are expressed in terms of modular functions characterized by branching identities among the theta functions. Their automorphic properties are used to study the critical behaviors. Some fine structures are found in the spectrum of the critical exponents.     

Thermal decompositions of complexes of Al,Ga, In,Cr, Fe and Bi ions with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone

The thermal decompositions of Al, Ga, In, Cr, Fe and Bi complexes with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone have been studied in a nitrogen atmosphere. The thermal stabilities of these complexes follow the sequence Bi<Fe<Ga<In<Cr<Al. In the cases of Al, Ga and In, a linear relationship was obtained between the melting points of the complexes and the ionic radii of the central metals.     

Total synthesis of ent-cassa-12,15-diene, a putative precursor of rice phytoalexins, phytocassanes A-E

The first total synthesis of ent-cassa-12,15-diene, a putative precursor of diterpene phytoalexins, was accomplished.     

Effects of chemical modifications of membranes on transmembrane potential

The role of membrane surface substances on the generation of transmembrane potential was studied. Several functional groups such as amino, epoxy, and carboxyl groups were covalently introduced to a bromoacetyl cellulose membrane. These functional groups caused a marked change in the surface potential of the membrane. The transmembrane potential shift caused by the chemical modification was attributed to the charge of the functional groups. Several proteins were covalently immobilized to the modified membrane. The modification process was followed through the transmembrane potential. The transmembrane potential of the protein-binding membranes showed that lysozyme and egg albumin at the membrane surface produced a positive and a negative charge, respectively. It was concluded that attachment of protein to the surface of the membrane affects a change in the charge density of the membrane surface with a resulting change in transmembrane potential.
