The dynamics of silver-alkali halide mixed single crystals (Ag(x)Na(1-x)Br, x = 0.23, 0.35, 0.40 and 0.70) were studied by inelastic neutron scattering during the process of spinodal decomposition. Using the thermal three-axes spectrometer PUMA as well as the time-of-flight spectrometer IN5, the time evolution of phonons was observed in time-resolved, stroboscopic measurements. Complementary to the study of long wavelength acoustic phonons, as studied previously, we extended these investigations to Brillouin-zone boundary modes that are particularly sensitive to variations of the local structure. Starting from the homogeneous mixed phase the behaviour of these modes during demixing is observed in real-time. A simple dynamical model based on local structure variants helps to interpret the results. It is shown that the phonon lifetimes vary strongly during the phase separation and increase drastically during the coarsening process. Up to a critical size of precipitates of about 10 nm, zone-boundary modes are found to be strongly damped, while beyond the line widths are reduced to the experimental resolution. This finding leads to the conclusion that the typical mean free path of these modes is of the order of 10 nm, which corresponds to 20 unit cells.  相似文献

We present neutron scattering measurements of the phonon-roton excitations of superfluid 4He held at negative pressures from zero to -5 bar. The liquid was stretched to negative pressures by immersing it in the porous medium MCM-41. In the wave vector range 0.35< or =Q< or =1.55 A(-1) and temperature T=0.4 K investigated, the phonon and maxon energies decrease systematically below bulk values as the negative pressure is increased. The energies are consistent with extrapolation of positive pressure values from which the negative internal pressure can be estimated. The maximum negative pressure realized is consistent with surface tension arguments and the MCM-41 pore diameter of 47 A.  相似文献

The absolute configuration of individual small molecules in the gas phase can be determined directly by light‐induced Coulomb explosion imaging (CEI). Herein, this approach is demonstrated for ionization with a single X‐ray photon from a synchrotron light source, leading to enhanced efficiency and faster fragmentation as compared to previous experiments with a femtosecond laser. In addition, it is shown that even incomplete fragmentation pathways of individual molecules from a racemic CHBrClF sample can give access to the absolute configuration in CEI. This leads to a significant increase of the applicability of the method as compared to the previously reported complete break‐up into atomic ions and can pave the way for routine stereochemical analysis of larger chiral molecules by light‐induced CEI.  相似文献

The spectrum of intermolecular excitations in solid C60 and C70 is investigated by neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy. The quasielastic scattering above the ordering transition is studied in detail and compared to a rotational diffusion model. Below the transition the scattering spectra have essentially a three peak structure with a prominent libronic excitation near ±2 meV for both fullerenes. A detailed analysis gives evidence for a broader distribution of librational modes with an additional pronounced maximum near 5 meV.  相似文献

Both the Walsh transform and a modified Pearson correlation coefficient can be used to infer the structure of a Boolean network from time series data. Unlike the correlation coefficient, the Walsh transform is also able to represent higher-order correlations. These correlations of several combined input variables with one output variable give additional information about the dependency between variables, but are also more sensitive to noise. Furthermore computational complexity increases exponentially with the order. We first show that the Walsh transform of order 1 and the modified Pearson correlation coefficient are equivalent for the reconstruction of Boolean functions. Secondly, we also investigate under which conditions (noise, number of samples, function classes) higher-order correlations can contribute to an improvement of the reconstruction process. We present the merits, as well as the limitations, of higher-order correlations for the inference of Boolean networks.  相似文献
