Pattern forming precipitation in gels due to coupling of chemical reactions with diffusion

Precipitate-forming chemical reactions have been studied in chemically cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) gel medium. One of the reactive components was incorporated into the gel, the other was allowed to diffuse into it. Depending on the experimental conditions the reaction-diffusion process often results in patterns of different type. Experiments performed in tubes and in thin layers were carried out in order to investigate the effects of various factors (cross-linking density, swelling degree as well as the concentrations of the outer and inner electrolytes) on the morphologies of the precipitate patterns. It was found that precipitation occurs not only in the Liesegang bands, but also between bands. Beside Liesegang-type structures, tree-like patterns have been observed, showing a characteristic periodicity in the density profile obtained by digitalized image analyses.     

Siderophore Transport in Mycobacteria Analyzed by Mössbauer Spectroscopy: Possible Routes to Novel Antibiotics against These Organisms?

Iron uptake of the ⁵⁷Fe-siderophores ferricrocin, rhizoferrin and citrate in M. smegmatis was analyzed by in situ Mössbauer spectroscopy. Siderophore dependent uptake and metabolic utilization patterns of ⁵⁷Fe were found. Rhizoferrin is accumulated in the organism and, therefore, represents a suitable candidate for the synthesis of novel siderophore-antibiotics conjugates.     

Lower bounds for the discrepancy of triples of inversive congruential pseudorandom numbers with power of two modulus

This paper deals with the inversive congruential method with power of two modulusm for generating uniform pseudorandom numbers. Statistical independence properties of the generated sequences are studied based on the distribution of triples of successive pseudorandom numbers. It is shown that there exist parameters in the inversive congruential method such that the discrepancy of the corresponding point sets in the unit cube is of an order of magnitude at leastm ^–1/3. The method of proof relies on a detailed analysis of certain rational exponential sums.

Measurement of the transverse Doppler shift using a stored relativistic7Li+ ion beam

We have performed for the first time precision spectroscopy on a coasting fast⁷Li⁺ ion beam in a storage ring. The ion beam moving with 6.4% speed of light was first electron cooled and then merged with two counterpropagating laser beams acting on two different hyperfine transitions sharing a common upper level (λ-system). One laser was frequency locked to thea ₃ ¹²⁷J₂ hfs frequency component established as a secondary frequency standard at 514 nm. The second laser was tuned over theλ-resonance, which was recorded relative to¹²⁷J₂ hfs components. This experiment is sensitive to the time dilation in fast moving frames and will lead to new limits for the verification of special relatively. The present status of the experiment and perspectives in accuracy are discussed.     

Investigations of alkali doped Fe2O3--V2O5 catalysts by transmission and conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy

Fe₂O₃--V₂O₅ catalysts doped with Cs₂SO₄ (molar ratio: V:Fe:Cs=1:0.74:0.06) were found to be a rather inhomogeneous mixture of various crystalline and amorphous iron vanadate phases. After calcination in air the catalyst was divided into three different parts which were analyzed separately revealing the formation of FeVO₄ in the top and bottom fraction of the crucible and Fe₂V₄O₁₃ in the middle fraction. As compared to the well crystallized FeVO₄ reference sample, the quadrupole splittings of FeVO₄ in the Cs-doped catalysts were larger pointing to more distorted iron sites which were assumed to be responsible for high catalytic selectivities. In contrast, the quadrupole splittings of FeVO₄ in the less selective K- and Rb-doped Fe₂O₃--V₂O₅ catalysts were smaller. Additional components in the bottom fraction were also α-Fe₂O₃ and Fe_1-xS. As indicated by the CEMS spectra the latter is located preferentially on the surface of the catalyst particles. Positron-lifetime study of vacancy annealing in neutron-irradiated GaAs

Positron-lifetime measurements have been used to study the annealing of vacancies in neutron-irradiated GaAs. The vacancies which are interpreted as defects in the Ga sublattice disappear in a single annealing stage (at 500°C in GaAs doped with Si or Zn, and at 600°C in Cr-doped GaAs).
