Synthesis and structure of unsymmetrical cross-conjugated dienones with thienyl substituents

By condensation of thiophenecarbaldehyde and m-nitrobenzaldehyde with furyl-, thienylmethylenecyclohexanones in basic medium 2-(het)arylmethylene-6-thienylmethylenecyclohexanones were prepared. Under the conditions of acid catalysis analogously built dienones were synthesized containing 5-nitrothiophene fragment. Based on the data of IR and ¹H NMR spectroscopy their E,E-configuration was established.     

Metallo‐supramolecular micelles: Studies by analytical ultracentrifugation and electron microscopy

In aqueous solutions, amphiphilic block copolymers in which a polystyrene (PS) segment is connected to a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block via a bis(2,2′:6′,2″‐ terpyridine ruthenium) complex can form micelles. Such micelles of the protomer type PS₂₀‐[Ru]‐PEO₇₀, according to the preparation procedure representing frozen micelles, were studied by sedimentation velocity and sedimentation equilibrium analysis in an analytical ultracentrifuge and by transmission electron microscopy, with different techniques applied for the sample preparation. The particles obtained were surprisingly multifarious in size. In ultracentrifugation experiments performed at relatively low salt concentrations, the distributions of the sedimentation coefficient s_20,w showed a pronounced peak at 9.6 S and a broad, only partly separated second peak around 14 S. The molar mass of the particles at the peak was around 430,000 g/mol, corresponding to an aggregation number of approximately 85. The average hydrodynamic diameter of the particles in the peak fraction was approximately 13 nm. In electron micrographs of negatively stained samples, spheres of diameters between 10 and 25 nm were the most abundant particles, but larger ones with a wide size range were also visible. The latter particles apparently were composed of smaller ones. The data from both sedimentation analysis and electron microscopy showed that (1) the studied compound formed primary micelles of diameters around 20 nm and (2) the primary micelles had a tendency toward aggregation. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Local chain‐configuration dependence of the mechanisms of the chemical reaction of poly(vinyl chloride). IX. Novel results on stereoselectivity of chlorination reaction

A poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sample was chlorinated in solution in the presence of 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile and by the fluid‐bed method. The aim was to evaluate the scope of the stereoselectivity of the chlorination reaction. The quantitative microstructural analysis of the residual PVC with a degree of chlorination was followed by ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. From the evolution of the content of isotactic (mm), heterotactic (mr), and syndiotactic (rr) triads and of mmmm, mmmr, and rmmr isotactic pentads in the unchlorinated parts of the polymer, it was unambiguously inferred that the chlorination reaction proceeds by a stereoselective mechanism in that the mr heterotactic triads are the most reactive structures followed by the isotactic triad at mmmr and rmmr pentads. This conclusion was confirmed on the basis of the Fourier transform infrared results. The results provide valuable information regarding the effect of tacticity and related local conformations in the chemical reactions of PVC. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Gas Concentration in Industrial Emissions Retrieved from a Laser-Beam Aureole

The feasibility of reconstructing components of industrial emissions by a remote method is studied under conditions of strong laser radiation scattering. It is demonstrated that an aureole around the laser beam bears information on optical parameters of the medium. Formulas for calculating the extinction coefficient of the medium and the concentration of the desired gas component in the emission from the measured radial profile of aureole brightness are derived.     

Weighted approximation of functions on the real line by Bernstein polynomials

The authors give error estimates, a Voronovskaya-type relation, strong converse results and saturation for the weighted approximation of functions on the real line with Freud weights by Bernstein-type operators.     

Absorption measurement of strained SiGe nanostructures deposited by UHV-CVD

In order to obtain a low band gap photocell based on the widely spread silicon technology, e.g. for thermophotovoltaics, SiGe nanostructures can be introduced into a monocrystalline silicon photocell. Beforehand, it is necessary to know the absorption coefficient of the SiGe quantum wells. On a silicon (1 0 0) substrate multiple Si/SiGe quantum well structures were grown by UHV-CVD. The Ge concentration and the well width were used as growth parameters. To obtain significant absorption, the experiment was set up to allow for 200 internal reflections.The total reflection of the light results in a standing electromagnetic wave. The absorption coefficient was obtained from the experimental data taking the geometry and the electric field distribution in the absorbing layer into account. The influence of well width and germanium content on the absorption was investigated with the goal of maximizing the absorption for photons with energies below the band gap energy of silicon. The measurement results are compared with a theoretical model, which takes the band structure of strained SiGe including confinement effects into account.
