Nucleophilic addition reaction of 2-trimethylsilyloxyfuran to N-gulosyl-C-alkoxymethylnitrones: synthetic approach to polyoxin C

[reaction: see text] The stereoselectivity of nucleophilic addition of 2-trimethylsilyloxyfuran to N-gulosyl-C-alkoxymethylnitrones was investigated. It was found that the selectivity was highly dependent on the bulkiness of the C-substituent of the nitrone. The major adducts were elaborated into the key intermediate of polyoxin C.     

Temperature sensitivity of Ge-B-SiO(2) waveguide Bragg gratings on a crystallized glass substrate

Waveguide Bragg gratings were fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition followed by irradiation with KrF excimer laser light through a phase mask. The period of the Bragg grating was 0.53 mum, and the Bragg wavelength was ~1.53 mum . The temperature dependence of the Bragg wavelength was 11 pm/ degrees C for a 10GeO(2) -90SiO(2)(mol.%) core waveguide on a Si substrate, and the Bragg wavelength shift was successfully reduced to 5.0pm/ degrees C by use of a 14GeO(2)-12B(2)O(3)-74SiO(2) (mol.%) core and a crystallized glass substrate with a thermal-expansion coefficient of -2.0x10(-6)(/ degrees C) .     

Orientation of iron bleomycin and porphyrin complexes on DNA fibers

Bleomycin (Blm) is an antitumor agent that requires iron and oxygen for strand cleavage of DNA. In this study, ferric bleomycin, Fe(III)Blm, or the nitric oxide adduct of ferrous bleomycin, ON-Fe(II)Blm, were bound to one-dimensionally oriented DNA fibers. Reductive nitrosylation of Fe(III) complexes took place in situ on B-form DNA fibers. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra were obtained as a function of the angle phi between the magnetic field B and the fiber axis Zf. For comparison, EPR spectra were acquired for ON-Fe(II)TMpyP and ON-Fe(II)TMpyP-Im on oriented DNA fibers, where TMpyP is 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridino)porphyrin and Im is imidazole. EPR spectra showed both low-spin Fe(III)Blm and ON-Fe(II)Blm bound to B-form DNA in two slightly different binding orientations in the ratio of 1:0.2. With A-form DNA, a fraction of bound Fe(III)Blm was high spin. Specifically, the angle beta between the fiber axis Zf and the g axis, gz, perpendicular to or nearly perpendicular to the equatorial plane of the iron complex was estimated as 20 degrees and 25 degrees for ON-Fe(II)Blm and 30 degrees and 25 degrees for Fe(III)Blm, respectively. The angle gamma that determines the orientation of gx and gy axes was estimated as 90 degrees for the two ON-Fe(II)Blm species and 10 degrees for the two Fe(III)Blm species, respectively. The NO was held rigidly in place as the temperature increased from 123 K to room temperature for ON-Fe(II)Blm but not for ON-Fe(II)TMpyP or ON-Fe(II)TMpyP-Im. It is hypothesized that the NO is structurally oriented by hydrogen bonding like the peroxide is held in HO2(-)-Co(III)Blm (Wu et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1996, 118, 1281-1294). The EPR parameters are consistent with a six-coordinate complex for ON-Fe(II)Blm, although the superhyperfine structure from the trans nitrogen was not detected. The increase in g value anisotropy upon binding ON-Fe(II)Blm to DNA fiber may be caused by an increase in the overlap of d pi and 2p pi* orbitals induced by an interaction of NO with DNA and/or by a perturbation of d orbitals due to the pyrimidine-guanine interaction. It is concluded that the EPR parameters of ON-Fe(II)Blm and Fe(III)Blm bound to oriented DNA support the hypothesis that FeBlm species bind to DNA with adduct structures similar to those formed by related CoBlm species and DNA.     

Polymer support assisted selective functionalization of azoles using a palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction

Regioselective palladium-catalyzed monoarylation of azoles was achieved using iodobenzoate immobilized on an insoluble polymer support. The positional selectivity for the coupling reaction was dramatically influenced by the presence of CuI. No diarylation was observed in either case. Unsymmetrical diarylation was also obtained with the polymer support using sequential coupling reactions.     

The Effects of Comprehensive Exercise Program on the Adjustments of Standing Balance in Community-Dwelling Elderly Persons

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of comprehensive exercise program widely accepted as a community-based physical intervention for the prevention of falling in the elderly persons on their controlling standing balance. Twenty-six community-dwelling elderly persons (13 males and females; 69.8 ± 2.8 years old) participated in this study. Daily exercise was comprised of walking for more than 30 min, stretching, muscle strengthening and balance exercise without exercise equipments. The intervention was continued for three months. Indicators of standing balance related to static balance, dynamic balance and postural response were measured before and after the intervention. As an effect of the intervention on static balance, the sway of center of pressure (COP) in the static stance significantly increased. In the dynamic balance, significant improvements were observed in one leg standing time, the 10-m gait time, functional reach. Additionally, the maximal movable length of COP which subjects can move voluntarily to right and left significantly increased. In the postural response, the integrated electromyography (IEMG) induced by postural response for sudden postural perturbation significantly decreased in the lower leg muscles. Since less muscular activities were sufficient to maintain posture, it was suggested that postural response was elicited more efficiently following the intervention. This study suggested that the comprehensive exercise program, which has been widely introduced as community-based interventions for the prevention of falling, have extensive effects on the control of standing balance covering static balance, dynamic balance and postural response in the elderly persons.

A bayesian approach to binary response curve estimation

Summary The purpose of the present paper is to propose a practical procedure for the estimation of the binary response curve. The procedure is based on a model which approximates the response curve by a finely segmented piecewise constant function. To obtain a stable estimate we assume a prior distribution of the parameters of the model. The prior distribution has several parameters (hyper-parameters) which are chosen to minimize an information criterion ABIC. The procedure is applicable to data consisting of observations of a binary response variable and a single explanatory variable. The practical utility of the procedure is demonstrated by examples of applications to the dose response curve estimation, to the intensity function estimation of a point process and to the analysis of social survey data. The application of the procedure to the discriminant analysis is also briefly discussed. The Institute of statistical mathematics     

Separation of traces of palladium using mercury as collector

Summary Microgram quantities of palladium are quantitatively deposited into mercury globules from various acid solutions. Mercury is removed by evaporation from the resulting amalgam before the subsequent determination.

Microemulsion-based synthesis of titanium phosphate nanotubes via amine extraction system

The first titanium phosphate nanotubes with alternating interlayer spacings have been successfully prepared and characterized. The synthesis is accomplished in a reverse microemulsion formed in an amine extraction system. TEM data from samples made after different times of reaction suggest a scrolling-formation mechanism.
