Gamma Ray Generation Through a 1.064 μM Laser Beam

We are exploring to process nuclear waste through nuclear transmutation method with ray irradiation. The ray employed for transmutation is generated in the way of Compton backscattering. Preliminary experiment is being developed on the NewSUBARU storage ring providing an electron beam with energy of 1 GeV, and 17.6 MeV ray will be generated through a head-on collision of the electron beam and a 1.064 m laser light. ray flux about the present experiment is predicted theoretically. A planned scheme for promoting the flux is also introduced, As well as the maximum laser power available for the storage ring is discussed.     

The antiulcer action of sophora and the active constituent in Sophora. II. The antiulcer action of vexibinol

The inhibitory effect of vexibinol, one of the flavanols found in Sophora, on gastric ulcers induced by HCl-ethanol has been reported previously. In the present study, the effect of vexibinol was examined in various experimental ulcer models in order to determine the mechanism of its antiulcer action. The results indicated that the oral administration of vexibinol at 25-50 mg/kg significantly inhibited the development of ulcers induced by HCl-ethanol, 0.6 N HCl 0.2 N NaOH, absolute ethanol and 1% NH3. In addition, an intraduodenal administration of vexibinol at 300 mg/kg significantly inhibited Shay's ulcer. Further, intraduodenal administration at 300 mg/kg significantly inhibited acid secretion caused by 2-deoxy-D-glucose. These results suggest that vexibinol has not only gastric mucosal protective action but also an inhibitory effect on the secretion of gastric acids.

N-Alkyl-N- (hydroxymethyl)nitrosamines, postulated intermediates in the metabolic activation of carcinogenic nitrosamines, were prepared by deoxygenation of the corresponding hydroperoxymethyl nitrosamines and characterized.     

Synthesis and evaluation of 1-arylsulfonyl-3-piperazinone derivatives as a factor Xa inhibitor II. Substituent effect on biological activities

Intravascular clot formation is an important event in a number of cardiovascular diseases. The prevention of blood coagulation has become a major target for new therapeutic agents. Factor Xa (FXa) is a trypsin-like serine protease that plays a key role in the blood coagulation cascade and represents an attractive target for anticoagulant drug development. We have investigated substituents in the central part of a lead compound (3: M55113), and discovered that compound M55551 (34: (R)-4-[(6-Chloro-2-naphthalenyl)sulfonyl]-6-oxo-1-[[1-(4-pyridinyl)-4-piperidinyl]methyl]-2-piperazinecarboxylic acid) is a potent inhibitor of FXa (IC(50)=0.006 microM), with high selectivity for FXa over trypsin and thrombin. The activity of this compound is ten times more powerful than the lead compound.     

Thermally assisted magnetic recording with bit-patterned media to achieve areal recording density beyond 5 Tb/in

Thermally assisted magnetic recording (TAR) with bit-patterned media was investigated by micromagnetic simulation. The media were assumed to be FePt layers. The effective head-field margin as well as the increase in temperature margin and down-track shift margin was investigated. Conditions of the head and medium that lead to a recording density beyond 5 Tb/in² were proposed.     

Antigen�Cantibody interactions of influenza virus hemagglutinin revealed by the fragment molecular orbital calculation

Effective interactions between amino acid residues in antigen?Cantibody complex of influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) protein can be evaluated in terms of the inter-fragment interaction energy (IFIE) analysis with the fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method, in which each fragment contains the side chain of corresponding amino acid residue. We have carried out the FMO-MP2 (second-order Moeller?CPlesset) calculation for the complex of HA antigen and Fab antibody of influenza virus H3N2 A/Aichi/2/68 and obtained the IFIE values between each amino acid residue in HA and the whole antibody as the sums over the residues contained in the latter. Combining this IFIE data with experimental data for hemadsorption activity of HA mutants, we succeeded in theoretically explaining the mutations in HA observed after the emergence of influenza virus H3N2 A/Aichi/2/68 in an earlier study, except for those of THR83. In the present study, we employ an alternative way of fragment division in the FMO calculation at the carbonyl C site of the peptide bond instead of the C_?? site used in the previous work, which provides revised IFIE values consistent with all the historical mutation data in the antigenic region E of HA including the case of THR83 in the present prediction scheme for probable mutations in HA.     

UV-laser-light-controlled photoluminescence of metal oxide nanoparticles in different gas atmospheres: BaTiO3, SrTiO3 and HfO2

The photoluminescence (PL) enhancement has been studied at room temperature using various specimen atmospheres (O₂ gas, CO₂ gas, CO₂–H₂ mixture gas, Ar–H₂ mixture gas and vacuum) under 325 nm laser light irradiation on various metal oxides. Of them, the results obtained for BaTiO₃ nanocrystals, SrTiO₃ ones and HfO₂ powder crystal are given in the present paper. Their PL were considerably increased in intensity by irradiation of 325 nm laser light in CO₂ gas and CO₂–H₂ mixture gas. The cause of the PL intensity enhancements is discussed in the light of the exciton theory, the defect chemistry and the photocatalytic theory. The results may be applied for the utilization of greenhouse gas (CO₂) and the optical sensor for CO₂ gas.     

An application of a laser technique to the velocity measurement of the liquid-fuel film within intake pipe of internal combustion engines

A new experimental technique is developed by combining a flash photolysis method with a laser-photodiode system to measure the velocity of the flow of thin liquid films. The technique is applied to the measurement of the velocity of the liquid-fuel film within the intake pipe of an internal combustion engine operated under firing condition. The results show that the velocity of the fuel film is of the order of 1/100 of the mean air velocity inside the intake pipe.     

Efficient radiative recombination of multinode-type excitons up to room temperature in CuCl thin films

We report the observation of anomalous temperature dependences of degenerate four-wave mixing spectra in CuCl thin films with high crystalline quality. The observed temperature dependence is in good agreement with the phase-decay-constant dependence of calculated induced-polarization spectrum. An excitonic state with large radiative width can be observed at high temperatures as superradiance is faster than the dephasing process. We succeeded in observing the DFWM signal up to room temperature based on the extremely large radiative width peculiar to the thickness region beyond the long-wavelength approximation regime.     

Chelation-Controlled Regioselection in Palladium-Catalyzed Carbonyl Allylation by 4-Pentene-1,3-Diol or Its Cyclic Carbonate

With cat. PdCl₂(PhCN)₂ and SnCl₂, 4-pentene-1,3-diol caused regioselective carbonyl allylation at 3-position in DMF to produce 2-substituted 3-vinyltetrahydrofurans and/or 1-substituted 2-vinylbutane-1,4-diols, and cyclic carbonate of 4-pentene-1,3-diol caused regioselective carbonyl allylation at terminal 5-position in THF to produce 1-substituted 3-hexene-1,6-diols.
