Copper–fluoropolymer (Cu-CFx) nano-composite films are deposited by dual ion-beam sputtering. The extensive analytical characterization of these layers reveals that inorganic nanoparticles composed of Cu(II) species are evenly dispersed in a branched fluoropolymer matrix. In particular, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been employed to study the surface chemical composition of the material and to assess how it changes on increasing the copper loading in the composite. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the copper nanoclusters have a mean diameter of 2–3 nm and are homogeneously in-plane distributed in the composite films. Electrothermal atomic absorption spectroscopy has been used to study the kinetics of copper release in the solutions employed for the biological tests. The Cu-CFx layers are employed as bioactive coatings capable of inhibiting the growth of target microorganisms such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Lysteria. The results of the analytical characterization enable a strict correlation to be established among the chemical composition of the material surface, the concentration of copper dissolved in the microorganisms broths, and the bioactivity of the nano-structured layer. 相似文献

A matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry-based approach was applied for the detection
of various lipid classes, such as triacylglycerols (TAGs) and phospholipids (PLs), and their oxidation by-products in extracts
of small (50–100 μg) samples obtained from painted artworks. Ageing of test specimens under various conditions, including
the presence of different pigments, was preliminarily investigated. During ageing, the TAGs and PLs content decreased, whereas
the amount of diglycerides, short-chain oxidative products arising from TAGs and PLs, and oxidized TAGs and PLs components
increased. The examination of a series of model paint samples gave a clear indication that specific ions produced by oxidative
cleavage of PLs and/or TAGs may be used as markers for egg and drying oil-based binders. Their elemental composition and hypothetical
structure are also tentatively proposed. Moreover, the simultaneous presence of egg and oil binders can be easily and unambiguously
ascertained through the simultaneous occurrence of the relevant specific markers. The potential of the proposed approach was
demonstrated for the first time by the analysis of real samples from a polyptych of Bartolomeo Vivarini (fifteenth century)

Painted Canosa ceramics were examined to identify the nature of the pigments employed and their manufacturing technology. A multi‐technique approach was used, comprising Raman microspectroscopy and laser ablation hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS). The analysed samples were mainly produced for burial in tombs and were not intended for everyday use. They belong to the period between the end of the mid‐7th century and the first half of the 4th century BC, and were excavated from the Toppicelli archaeological district near the suburbs of Canosa (Puglia, Italy). Forty‐eight pottery fragments were available for this study. No handling of the samples was required for the Raman study, and it was possible to excise the pigmented layer in such a way that the lacunae were not distinguishable to the naked eye due to the micrometric size of the laser spot as far as LA‐ICP‐MS is concerned. Their combination turned out to be quite useful for the investigation of these archaeological materials: the chemical nature of the white, red, brown and black pigments employed in the pottery manufacture was investigated. Iron and manganese compounds were identified as the red and brown/black main colouring substances, respectively; on the other hand, whites and engobes (whitish slips) were based on kaolinite. This set of colouring substances is of importance, as it enabled the artisan to obtain in one oxidising firing cycle brown, black and red paints. Finally, the finding of manganese black in these Canosa potsherds confirms that Canosa was an important centre connecting the near East to central Italy and Europe since the pre‐Roman age. Bile acids regulate nongenomic actions through the activation of TGR5, a membrane receptor that is G protein-coupled to the induction of adenylate cyclase. In this work, a training set of 43 bile acid derivatives is used to develop a molecular interaction field analysis (MFA) and a 3D-quantitative structure-activity relationship study (3D-QSAR) of TGR5 agonists. The predictive ability of the resulting model is evaluated using an external set of compounds with known TGR5 activity, and six bile acid derivatives whose unknown TGR5 activity is herein assessed with in vitro luciferase assay of cAMP formation. The results show a good predictive model and indicate a statistically relevant degree of correlation between the TGR5 activity and the molecular interaction fields produced by discrete positions of the bile acid scaffold. This information is instrumental to extend on a quantitative basis the current structure-activity relationships of bile acids as TGR5 modulators and will be fruitful to design new potent and selective agonists of the receptor. 相似文献

A new type of nanomaterial has been developed as antibacterial additive for food packaging applications. This nanocomposite
is composed of copper nanoparticles embedded in polylactic acid, combining the antibacterial properties of copper nanoparticles
with the biodegradability of the polymer matrix. Metal nanoparticles have been synthesised by means of laser ablation, a rising
and easy route to prepare nanostructures without any capping agent in a liquid environment. As prepared, nanoparticle suspensions
have been easily mixed to a polymer solution. The resulting hybrid solutions have been deposited by drop casting, thus obtaining
self-standing antibacterial packages. All samples have been characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
and electro-thermal atomic absorption spectroscopy. Ion release data have been matched with bioactivity tests performed by
Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) method (JIS Z 2801:2000) against Pseudomonas spp., a very common Gram-negative microbial group able to proliferate in processed food. 相似文献

As a part of a systematic study aimed at assessing the chemical composition of ancient pigments as well as at collecting
information useful for the understanding of the technical aspects related to pottery preservation and decoration, the results
of analysis performed on red, brown and black pigments decorating pre-Roman pottery excavated in thirteen different tombs
unearthed in the archaeological zone of Canosa (Puglia, Italy) are presented. Both surface (XPS) and bulk (FT-IR) spectroscopies
were used which gave complementary information and XRD was used in some cases to further support the spectral assignments.
Results suggested that the shards characterized by “nominally” the same color could be differentiated by the chemical composition
of the pigmented layers; in particular, the shards exhibiting the red pigment could be divided into three groups containing,
respectively, either hematite or ochre plus other substances not related to the color but of great concern for the understanding
of ancient techniques used for color preparation. Manganese oxides were found to be the basis of the brown pigments, which
could be divided into three groups on the basis of Mn and Fe contents. Either magnetite or carbon of vegetable origin was
found in the black-pigmented layers. Furthermore, an attempt was made to find a possible correlation between this classification
and the results of a provenance study carried out on the same pool of shards analyzed in the present investigation.
