Deformation of doped NaCl crystals during uniaxial compression at temperatures of 4.2–293 K

The impurity weakening of crystalline NaCl:Mg and NaCl:Mn associated with purification of the matrix in a melt is demonstrated. This effect is manifested in a consistent change in the yield strength and mobility of dislocations. Its unusual temperature dependence is determined: in a number of cases weakening becomes greater as the temperature is lowered within the interval 293–4.2 K. A deviation in the elastic region of the stress-strain curves is observed to increase as the temperature is lowered. Plasticizing of crystalline NaCl is established: when the deformation temperature is lowered from 293 to 77 and 4.2 K the rate of rise in the yield strength of Cd²⁺ and Sr²⁺ doped samples is lower than that of undoped samples. Optimal Server Acquisition in Open Queueing Networks

Several production and flexible manufacturing systems can naturally be modelled using queueing networks. In this paper, we consider the problem of acquiring servers for the nodes of an open queueing network, so as to optimize the steady-state mean virtual system parameters subject to a budget constraint. A partial enumeration scheme and a heuristic method have been proposed to solve this problem. Empirical results based on randomly generated test problems are used to identify a class of problems for which the heuristic performs well.     

Step-strain deformations for viscoelastic fluids: Formulation of a strain-coupling constitutive equation

An integral constitutive equation which includes strain-coupling effects is proposed. The constitutive equation is more general than the K-BKZ equation, and it is shown that this equation can explain various important aspects of double-step stress-relaxation data.     

Stressed state of a rock mass around a working with a relief cavity

The stressed state of a rock mass in the vicinity of a preparatory working protected by a relief cavity is studied. Numerical and theoretical study of a Dual Mesh Method using finite volume schemes for two phase flow problems in porous media

Summary. In this paper we are interested in two phase flow problems in porous media. We use a Dual Mesh Method to discretize this problem with finite volume schemes. In a simplified case (elliptic - hyperbolic system) we prove the convergence of approximate solutions to the exact solutions. We use the Dual Mesh Method in physically complex problems (heterogeneous cases with non constant total mobility). We validate numerically the Dual Mesh Method on practical examples by computing error estimates for different test-cases. Received March 21, 1997 / Revised version received October 13, 1997     

Vibrational spectra of (NH4)3ZnCl5

IR and Raman spectra of (NH₄)₃ZnCl₅ have been recorded. The observed spectra have been analysed on the basis of the vibrations of ZnCl ₄ ²⁻ and NH ₄ ⁺ ions. The appearance of multiple Raman bands indicates the presence of two different types of ammonium ions. The effect of anisotropic crystalline field over the ZnCl₄ and NH₄ tetrahedra is also discussed. The assignment of internal modes has been verified by the potential energy distribution calculations.     

Mössbauer study of small amounts of iron in graphite,around the diamond-graphite pressure-temperature stability region

An exploratory Mössbauer spectroscopy study of the Fe-C system in the C rich region, prepared by high pressure-high temperature treatment near the graphite-diamond stability line, was made. The results obtained for the different processing conditions give no evidence of Fe intercalation in graphite. The presence of some water in the cell produced hydrated Fe complexes, which can explain the deleterious effect of water or hydrogen in the high pressure diamond synthesis.

Analysis of atmospheric particular matter and water using atomic emission spectrometry with inductively-coupled plasma and two-jet plasmatron

Summary A method for the atomic emission spectrometric analysis of air and water with inductively coupled and two-jet direct current plasmas has been developed. The method has been applied to the determination of impurity contents with good accuracy and sensitivity.
