The structure of Valdivia compact lines

We study linearly ordered spaces which are Valdivia compact in their order topology. We find an internal characterization of these spaces and we present a counter-example disproving a conjecture posed earlier by the first author. The conjecture asserted that a compact line is Valdivia compact if its weight does not exceed ℵ₁, every point of uncountable character is isolated from one side and every closed first countable subspace is metrizable. It turns out that the last condition is not sufficient. On the other hand, we show that the conjecture is valid if the closure of the set of points of uncountable character is scattered. This improves an earlier result of the first author.     

Quaternionic structures

Any oriented 4-dimensional real vector bundle is naturally a line bundle over a bundle of quaternion algebras. In this paper we give an account of modules over bundles of quaternion algebras, discussing Morita equivalence, characteristic classes and K-theory. The results have been used to describe obstructions for the existence of almost quaternionic structures on 8-dimensional Spin^c manifolds in ?adek et al. (2008) [5] and may be of some interest, also, in quaternionic and algebraic geometry.     

Erratum to “State-morphism MV-algebras” [Ann. Pure Appl. Logic 161 (2009) 161-173]

Recently, the first two authors characterized in Di Nola and Dvure?enskij (2009) [1] subdirectly irreducible state-morphism MV-algebras. Unfortunately, the main theorem (Theorem 5.4(ii)) has a gap in the proof of Claim 10, as the example below shows. We now present a correct characterization and its correct proof.     

The implications of costs, capacity, and competition on product line selection

We consider a situation in which a manufacturer has to select the product(s) to sell as well as the selling price and production quantity of each selected product. There are two substitutable products in the consideration set, where product 2 has a higher quality and reservation price than that of product 1. By considering the cannibalization effect that depends on the selling price of each product, the manufacturer needs to evaluate the profit function associated with three different product line options: sell both products or only one of the 2 products. In order to examine the impact of costs, capacity, and competition on the optimal product line selection, optimal price, and optimal production quantity analytically, we present a stylized model in this paper so that we can determine the conditions under which a particular option is optimal.     

On the irrationality of factorial series II

In this paper we give irrationality results for numbers of the form where the numbers an behave like a geometric progression for a while. The method is elementary, not using differentiation or integration. In particular, we derive elementary proofs of the irrationality of π and em for Gaussian integers m≠0.     

On Li's criterion for the Riemann hypothesis for the Selberg class

In this paper, we shall prove a generalization of Li's positivity criterion for the Riemann hypothesis for the extended Selberg class with an Euler sum. We shall also obtain two arithmetic expressions for Li's constants , where the sum is taken over all non-trivial zeros of the function F and the indicates that the sum is taken in the sense of the limit as T→∞ of the sum over ρ with |Imρ|?T. The first expression of λF(n), for functions in the extended Selberg class, having an Euler sum is given terms of analogues of Stieltjes constants (up to some gamma factors). The second expression, for functions in the Selberg class, non-vanishing on the line , is given in terms of a certain limit of the sum over primes.

Improved bounds for the Laplacian energy of Bethe trees

For k, d?2, a Bethe tree is a rooted tree with k levels which the root vertex has degree d, the vertices from level 2 to k-1 have degree d+1 and the vertices at the level k are pendent vertices. So et al, using a theorem by Ky Fan have obtained both upper and lower bounds for the Laplacian energy of bipartite graphs. We shall employ the above mentioned theorem to obtain new and improved bounds for the Laplacian energy in the case of Bethe trees.     

On solving integral equations using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods

In this paper, we propose an original approach to the solution of Fredholm equations of the second kind. We interpret the standard Von Neumann expansion of the solution as an expectation with respect to a probability distribution defined on a union of subspaces of variable dimension. Based on this representation, it is possible to use trans-dimensional Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods such as Reversible Jump MCMC to approximate the solution numerically. This can be an attractive alternative to standard Sequential Importance Sampling (SIS) methods routinely used in this context. To motivate our approach, we sketch an application to value function estimation for a Markov decision process. Two computational examples are also provided.     

Inverting linear combinations of identity and generalized Catalan matrices

We introduce the notion of the generalized Catalan matrix as a kind of lower triangular Toeplitz matrix whose nonzero elements involve the generalized Catalan numbers. Inverse of the linear combination of the Pascal matrix with the identity matrix is computed in Aggarwala and Lamoureux (2002) [1]. In this paper, continuing this idea, we invert various linear combinations of the generalized Catalan matrix with the identity matrix. A simple and efficient approach to invert the Pascal matrix plus one in terms of the Hadamard product of the Pascal matrix and appropriate lower triangular Toeplitz matrices is considered in Yang and Liu (2006) [14]. We derive representations for inverses of linear combinations of the generalized Catalan matrix and the identity matrix, in terms of the Hadamard product which includes the Generalized Catalan matrix and appropriate lower triangular Toeplitz matrix.     

The Dattoli-Srivastava conjectures concerning generating functions involving the harmonic numbers

In a recent paper Dattoli and Srivastava [3], by resorting to umbral calculus, conjectured several generating functions involving harmonic numbers. In this sequel to their work our aim is to rigorously demonstrate the truth of the Dattoli-Srivastava conjectures by making use of simple analytical arguments. In addition, one of these conjectures is stated and proved in more general form.
