Talc production: An overview

Luzenac Group, which presently produces and markets more than 1 million tons talc per year, has ensured its international development through the permanent search for a better adequacy between the very specific talc properties of its various deposits and their application in very different industrial fields.     

From the plateau problem to periodic minimal surfaces in lipids,surfactants and diblock copolymers

A novel method is presented for generating periodic surfaces. Such periodic surfaces appear in all systems which are characterized by internal interfaces and which additionally exhibit ordering. One example are systems of AB diblock copolymers, where the internal interfaces are formed by the chemical bonds between the A and B blocks. In these systems at least two bicontinuous phases are formed: the ordered bicontinuous double diamond phase and the gyroid phase. In these phases the ordered domains of A monomers and B monomers are separated by a periodic interface of the same symmetry as the phases themselves. Here we present a novel method for the generation of such periodic surfaces based on the simple Landau-Ginzburg model of microemulsions. We test the method on four known minimal periodic surfaces, find two new surfaces of cubic symmetry, and show how to obtain periodic surfaces of high genus and n-tuply continuous phases (n > 2). So far only bicontinuous (n = 2) phases have been known. We point out that the Landau model used here should be generic for all systems characterized by internal interfaces, including the diblock copolymer systems.     

Efficient computation of potential energy first and second derivatives for molecular dynamics,normal coordinate analysis,and molecular mechanics calculations

By using two- and three-body internal coordinates and their derivatives as intermediates, it is possible to enormously simplify formulas for three- and four-body internal coordinates and their derivatives. Using this approach, simple formulas are presented for stretch (two-body), two types of bend (three-body), and wag and two types of torsion (four-body) internal coordinates and their first and second derivatives. The formulas are eminently suitable for economizing molecular dynamics and molecular mechanics calculations and normal coordinate analysis of complicated potential energy surfaces. Efficient methods for computing derivatives of entire potential energy terms, and in particular cross terms with switching functions, are presented.     

Stereoelectronic Features of a Complex Ketene Dimerization Reaction

The amidation reaction of a tetrahydroisoquinolin-1-one-4-carboxylic acid is a key step in the multi-kilogram-scale preparation of the antimalarial drug SJ733, now in phase 2 clinical trials. In the course of investigating THIQ carboxamidations, we found that propanephosphonic acid anhydride (T3P) is an effective reagent, although the yield and byproducts vary with the nature and quantity of the base. As a control, the T3P reaction of a 3-(2-thienyl) THIQ was performed in the absence of the amine, and the products were characterized: among them are three dimeric allenes and two dimeric lactones. A nucleophile-promoted ketene dimerization process subject to subtle steric and stereoelectronic effects accounts for their formation. Two novel monomeric products, a decarboxylated isoquinolone and a purple, fused aryl ketone, were also isolated, and mechanisms for their formation from the ketene intermediate are proposed.
