New phosphorylating reagents for deoxyribonucleosides and oligonucleotides

New phosphorylating reagents 1 and 2 were prepared in three steps from 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. They showed good efficiency in the solid phase synthesis of 5′-phosphate monoester nucleosides. End-phosphate DNA sequence synthesis demonstrated the efficiency of the new reagents (1 and 2) according to the general procedure of automated DNA synthesis. The oxidation of P(III) to P(V) and the removal of benzyl protecting groups were achieved in a single step by treatment with a 0.02 M I₂/pyridine/H₂O solution. Due to this one-pot treatment, it is possible to use the phosphorylating reagents (1 and 2) for the synthesis of base-sensitive ODNs. The reagents 1 and 2 are unique among phosphorylating reagents.     

Determination of Antioxidant Activity of Hibiscus Flowers by Flow Injection Analysis with Chemiluminescence Detection

This study reports a simple and rapid method for the determination of the antioxidant activity of the phenolics present in plants of the Hibiscus genus. The protocol is based on the ability of the phenolic compounds to inhibit luminol chemiluminescence through the inactivation of free radicals in a flow injection system. Using the optimized operational conditions, the antioxidant activities of several phenolics were measured. The results were explained on the basis of structure–reactivity relationships. The antioxidant activities of dried flowers of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and Hibiscus sabdariffa were evaluated. The protocol was validated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-hydrate free radical assay. The differences in the antiradical activities were explained based on the concentrations of total polyphenol and flavonoid concentrations determined by spectrophotometric methods. It was concluded that the chemiluminescence method was complementary for the evaluation of hydrophilic antioxidants in plants.     

The electronic properties of isocyanides at rhenium—dinitrogen binding sites. Preparation and redox properties of the isocyanide complexes trans-[ReCl(CNR)(Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2)2]

The isocyanide complexes trans-[ReCl(CNR)(dppe)₂] (R  Me, Bu^t, C₆H₄CH₃-4, C₆H₄CH₃-2, C₆H₄Cl-4, C₆H₄OCH₃-4 and C₆H₃Cl₂-2,6; dppe  Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂) have been prepared by isocyanide displacement of dinitrogen from the parent complex trans-[ReCl(N₂)(ddpe)₂]. Their redox properties have been studied by cyclic voltammetry and are interpreted on the basis of the electronic properties and the geometry of the ligating isocyanides which are believed to be bent in these complexes, appearing to exhibit ligand parameter (P_L) values ca. +0.3 V higher than those which would be expected for linear geometry. A very high polarisability (B ? 3.4) is observed for the {ReCl(dppe)₂} site.     

Evaluation of Ptitsyn-Eizner λ parameter in dilute solutions of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) and its variation in conformational transitions of poly(methyl methacrylate)

The Ptitsyn-Eizner λ flexibility parameter for poly(N-vinylcarbozole) solutions under theta conditions has been found to be 6.31, demonstrating the rigidity imparted to the polymer chain by the carbazole group. A study has been made of the variation of this parameter with solvent and temperature. A study has been made of the variation of λ in a conformational transition of poly(methyl methacrylate).     

Experimental indications for the response of the spectators to the participant blast

Precise momentum distributions of identified projectile fragments, formed in the reactions 238U+Pb and 238U+Ti at 1A GeV, are measured with a high-resolution magnetic spectrometer. With increasing mass loss, the velocities first decrease as expected from previously established systematics, then level off, and finally increase again. Light fragments are on the average even faster than the projectiles. This finding is interpreted as the response of the spectators to the participant blast. The reacceleration of projectile spectators is sensitive to the nuclear mean field and provides a new tool for investigating the equation of state of nuclear matter.     

Solid State Reactions of Hemin with Basic Substances: Formation of bis and Mixed Complexes

The solid state reactions of hemin with KCN, Na₂SxH₂O, arginine, imidazole, 1-methylimidazole, 2-methylimidazole, benzimidazole, and mixtures of these basic reagents were monitored using IR, Mössbauer, and XRD techniques. All these basic substances react at the peripheral propionic acid group of hemin-forming salts. Binary mixtures of KCN, arginine, imidazole, 1-methylimidazole, 2-methylimidazole, and benzimidazole were found to form complexes with mixed ligands at the iron site of hemin. According to the structural information obtained for these mixed complexes, mechanisms for their formation are proposed. The solid state synthesis and the properties of the obtained products reveal the specifities of the involved ligands.     

Higher order symmetric spaces and the roots of the identity in a Lie group

Let denote the set of all -roots of the identity in a Lie group . We show that is always an embedded submanifold of , having the conjugacy classes of its elements as open submanifolds. These conjugacy classes are examples of -symmetric spaces and we show, more generally, that every -symmetric space of a Lie group is a covering manifold of an embedded submanifold of . We compute also the Hessian of the inclusions of and into , relative to the natural connection on the domain and to the symmetric connection on .

     

Synthesis, antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity of novel silver(I) tris(pyrazolyl)methanesulfonate and 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphadamantane complexes

Five new silver(I) complexes of formulas [Ag(Tpms)] (1), [Ag(Tpms)(PPh(3))] (2), [Ag(Tpms)(PCy(3))] (3), [Ag(PTA)][BF(4)] (4), and [Ag(Tpms)(PTA)] (5) {Tpms = tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methanesulfonate, PPh(3) = triphenylphosphane, PCy(3) = tricyclohexylphosphane, PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane} have been synthesized and fully characterized by elemental analyses, (1)H, (13)C, and (31)P NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and IR spectroscopic techniques. The single crystal X-ray diffraction study of 3 shows the Tpms ligand acting in the N(3)-facially coordinating mode, while in 2 and 5 a N(2)O-coordination is found, with the SO(3) group bonded to silver and a pendant free pyrazolyl ring. Features of the tilting in the coordinated pyrazolyl rings in these cases suggest that this inequivalence is related with the cone angles of the phosphanes. A detailed study of antimycobacterial and antiproliferative properties of all compounds has been carried out. They were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activities against the standard strains Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29922), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus pneumoniae (ATCC 49619), Streptococcus pyogenes (SF37), Streptococcus sanguinis (SK36), Streptococcus mutans (UA159), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), and the fungus Candida albicans (ATCC 24443). Complexes 1-5 have been found to display effective antimicrobial activity against the series of bacteria and fungi, and some of them are potential candidates for antiseptic or disinfectant drugs. Interaction of Ag complexes with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has been studied by fluorescence spectroscopic techniques, using ethidium bromide (EB) as a fluorescence probe of DNA. The decrease in the fluorescence of DNA-EB system on addition of Ag complexes shows that the fluorescence quenching of DNA-EB complex occurs and compound 3 is particularly active. Complexes 1-5 exhibit pronounced antiproliferative activity against human malignant melanoma (A375) with an activity often higher than that of AgNO(3), which has been used as a control, following the same order of activity inhibition on DNA, i.e., 3 > 2 > 1 > 5 > AgNO(3)? 4.     

Water-soluble and stable dinitrogen phosphine complexes trans-[ReCl(N2)(PTA-H)n(PTA)4-n]n+ (n = 0-4), the first with 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane

The first dinitrogen complexes with the hydrosoluble PTA ligand, or its protonated form PTA-H, trans-[ReCl(N2)(PTA-H)n(PTA)(4-n)]n+ (n = 0-4), are prepared, shown to be soluble and stable in water, interconvertible by stepwise protonation/deprotonation and to form, upon N2 loss, the corresponding penta-coordinate compounds. Dinitrogen displacement by CO affords trans-[ReCl(CO)(PTA)4].
