Heat Capacity of Titanium in the Temperature Range 1500 to 1900 K Measured by a Millisecond Pulse-heating Technique

Heat capacity of titanium in the temperature range 1500 to 1900 K was measured by a pulse-heating system, operating in the millisecond time regime. The measurement technique is based on selfheating of a tube-shaped specimen from room temperature to melting in approximately 500 ms and measuring current through the specimen, voltage drop along a defined portion of the specimen, and temperature of the specimen every 0.5 ms. A total of 12 measurements on 3 tube-shaped specimens was made. The reproducibility between individual measurements was 0.4%, between different specimens 0.7%. The extended measurement uncertainty (at a confidence level of 95%) is estimated to be 3%. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

A microscope for the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer in Mainz

A 96-element plastic-scintillator detector array has been constructed to improve the energy resolution and tagged-photon flux over a moveable energy range of up to 60MeV in the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at Mainz. Test results are presented which demonstrate that this device improves the resolution by a factor of about 6 compared to the main detector array. It is also shown that it is possible to achieve accurate energy calibration by using electron beams of several different accurately known energies from the Mainz accelerator.     

On triazoles XLIII. Synthesis of 1,2,4‐triazolyl isoquinolinium zwitter ions

Type 8 isoquinolinium zwitter ions were synthesised by the reaction of type 1 diketones or type 2 pyrylium salts with different 5‐amino‐3‐Q‐1H‐1,2,4‐triazoles. Spectroscopic and X‐ray diffraction evidence was given for the zwitter ion structure of the products obtained. The position of the negative charge on the 1,2,4‐tiazolium ring was proved by comparison of the cmr and uv spectra of the products obtained with the three possible N‐benzyl derivatives 14–16 prepared for this purpose.     

Zwitterion radicals and anion radicals from electron transfer and solvent condensation with the fingerprint developing agent ninhydrin.

Ninhydrin (the fingerprint developing agent) spontaneously dehydrates in liquid ammonia and in hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) to form indantrione, which has a sufficiently large solution electron affinity to extract an electron from the solvent (HMPA) to produce the indantrione anion radical. In liquid NH(3), the presence of trace amounts of amide ion causes the spontaneous formation of an anion radical condensation product, wherein the no. 2 carbon (originally a carbonyl carbon) becomes substituted with -NH(2) and -OH groups. In HMPA, the indantrione anion radical spontaneously forms condensation products with the HMPA to produce a variety of zwitterionic radicals, wherein the no. 2 carbon becomes directly attached to a nitrogen of the HMPA. The mechanisms for the formation of the zwitterionic paramagnetic condensation products are analogous to that observed in the reaction of ninhydrin with amino acids to yield Ruhemann's Purple, the contrast product in fingerprint development. The formation of anion and zwitterionic radical condensation products from ninhydrin and nitrogen-containing solvents may represent an example of a host of analogous polyketone-solvent reactions.

Über den Satz von Weil-Cartier

It is shown that the theorem ofWeil-Cartier ([10, Th. 5], [4, Th. 3]) is connected with a homomorphism of groups of unitary operators. The existence proof for this homomorphism is based on simple results in harmonic analysis and on an extension property of the Schwartz-Bruhat functions. Some applications are given, including a result ofIgusa's [6, Th. 3] and the reciprocity formula ofKrazer-Siegel [9, Th. 2]. An outline of the proof has been given in [8].
