Stress-Strain State in the Zone of Load Transfer in a Composite Specimen under Uniaxial Tension

The stress-strain state in the zone of load transfer in a uniaxially stretched specimen made of a unidirectional epoxy carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is investigated. A parametric analysis of the influence of geometric and mechanical characteristics of the specimen on its stress-strain state is performed by means of finite-element modeling. The parameters allowing us to significantly reduce the dangerous concentration of transverse and tangential stresses are revealed. The mechanical tensile characteristics of a high-strength pultruded unidirectional CFRP are determined experimentally, and the size effect of its strength is estimated.     

Structure of Binary Darboux-Type Transformations for Hermitian Adjoint Differential Operators

For Hermitian adjoint differential operators, we consider the structure of Darboux–Bäcklund-type transformations in the class of parametrically dependent Hilbert spaces. By using the proposed new method, we obtain the corresponding integro-differential symbols of the operators of transformations in explicit form and consider the problem of their application to the construction of two-dimensional Lax-integrable nonlinear evolution equations and their Darboux–Bäcklund-type transformations.     

On the electron energy spectrum in heavily doped non-parabolic semiconductors

An attempt is made to present a simple theoretical analysis of the energy-wave vector dispersion relation of the conduction electrons in heavily doped non-parabolic semiconductors forming band tails. We observe that the complex energy spectrum in doped small-gap materials whose unperturbed conduction band is described by the three band model of Kane is due to the interaction of the impurity atoms in the tail with the spin-orbit splitting constant of the valence band (Δ), For band-gap (E_g)<Δ the imaginary part predominates which tails in to the conduction band. For the opposite inequality the real part comes in to play which tails in to the split-off band. In the absence of the band tailing effect, the imaginary part of the complex energy spectrum vanishes and the same is also true for doped two-band Kane-type and parabolic energy bands respectively. The present formulation helps us in investigating the Boltzmann transport equation dependent transport properties of degenerate semiconductors and are expected to agree better with experiments. The well-known results of unperturbed three and two band models of Kane together with wide-gap parabolic energy bands have been obtained as special cases of our generalized analysis under certain limiting conditions.     

Feedback controlled periodic states for different kinds of photorefractive nonlinear response

We investigate analytically and numerically the influence of the type of the photorefractive nonlinear response on the periodic states (attractors) which occur during feedback controlled 2W-coupling and correspond to almost 100% diffraction efficiency of the dynamic index grating. In addition to the case of the local response typical, for example, for LiNbO₃ crystals we consider the cases of nonlocal (diffusive) response (BaTiO₃, SBN) and resonant response (DC-biased BSO, BTO, and BGO crystals). It is shown that the conditions for the transition to the periodic states and their apparent characteristics are strongly different for the two limiting cases above. Extensions of Modules over Schur Algebras, Symmetric Groups and Hecke Algebras

We study the relation between the cohomology of general linear and symmetric groups and their respective quantizations, using Schur algebras and standard homological techniques to build appropriate spectral sequences. As our methods fit inside a much more general context within the theory of finite-dimensional algebras, we develop our results first in that general setting, and then specialize to the above situations. From this we obtain new proofs of several known results in modular representation theory of symmetric groups. Moreover, we reduce certain questions about computing extensions for symmetric groups and Hecke algebras to questions about extensions for general linear groups and their quantizations.     

Index Heuristics for Multiclass M/G/1 Systems with Nonpreemptive Service and Convex Holding Costs

We consider the optimal service control of a multiclass M/G/1 queueing system in which customers are served nonpreemptively and the system cost rate is additive across classes and increasing convex in the numbers present in each class. Following Whittle's approach to a class of restless bandit problems, we develop a Langrangian relaxation of the service control problem which serves to motivate the development of a class of index heuristics. The index for a particular customer class is characterised as a fair charge for service of that class. The paper develops these indices and reports an extensive numerical investigation which exhibits strong performance of the index heuristics for both discounted and average costs.
