Singular Propositions,Negation and the Square of Opposition

This paper contains two traditions of diagrammatic studies namely one, the Euler–Venn–Peirce diagram and the other, following tradition of Aristotle, the square of oppositions. We put together both the traditions to study representations of singular propositions (through a diagram system Venn-i, involving constants), their negations and the inter relationship between the two. Along with classical negation we have incorporated negation of another kind viz. absence (taking a cue from the notion of ‘abhãva’ existing in ancient Indian knowledge system). We have also considered the changes that take place in the context of open universe.     

High-performance 850 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser in Gigabit Ethernet network

High-performance oxide vertical-cavity surface-emitting (VCSEL) laser is fabricated, and its usefulness is demonstrated as a suitable transmitting light source at 850 nm operating wavelength for Gigabit Ethernet application. Utilization of barrier reduction layers reveals low-threshold current requirement for operation at high modulation bandwidth. The electrical and optical characteristics, measured from the fabricated VCSEL, are simulated for Gigabit Ethernet transmission. Data rates of 1.25 Gbps with a bit error rate of 10⁻¹¹ are achieved by the use of a specific multimode network simulator.     

Harmonic manifolds with minimal horospheres

For a non-compact harmonic manifold M, we establish an integral formula for the derivative of a harmonic function on M. As an application we show that for the harmonic spaces having minimal horospheres, bounded harmonic functions are constant. The main result of this article states that the harmonic spaces having polynomial volume growth are flat. In other words, if the volume density function Θ of M has polynomial growth, then M is flat. This partially answers a question of Szabo namely, which density functions determine the metric of a harmonic manifold. Finally, we give some natural conditions which ensure polynomial growth of the volume function.     

Synthesis of puraquinonic acid ethyl ester and deliquinone via a common intermediate

Both compounds were prepared via a common intermediate. The key features included the direct synthesis of the indan skeleton and the radical addition to a quinone.     

Evidence for an anomalous redox ionic pair between Ru and Mn in SrRu0.5Mn0.5O3: an X-ray absorption spectroscopy approach

X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies of the polycrystalline SrRu0.5Mn0.5O3 have been performed at Ru, Mn-L2,3 edges. The 2p-->t2g related peak at the Ru-L2 edge is more intense than the Ru-L3 edge and a shift of the 2p-->eg related peak by approximately 0.8 eV to higher energy than that of the Ru(IV) compound, SrRuO3 is observed. In combination with a crystal field multiplet calculation approach, a possible anomalous change in the spectral features is explained based on the existence of a redox ionic pair involving Ru(IV)/Ru(v)<-->Mn(III)/Mn(IV).     

Formation of one-, two-, and three-dimensional open-framework zinc phosphates in the presence of a tetramine

Five new open-framework zinc phosphates, encompassing the entire hierarchy of open-framework structures, have been synthesized hydrothermally in the presence of triethylenetetramine. The structures include one-dimensional ladders, two-dimensional layers, and three-dimensional structures as well as a zinc phosphate where the amine acts as a ligand. The structure of I is composed of ZnO4 and HPO4 tetrahedra, which are edge-shared to form four-membered rings, which, in turn, form a one-dimensional chain (ladder). In II, these ladders are fused into a layer. The structures of III and IV comprise networks of ZnO4 and PO4 tetrahedra forming three-dimensional architectures. In V, the amine molecule coordinates to the Zn and acts as a pillar supporting the zinc phosphate layers, which possess infinite Zn-O-Zn linkages. The 16-membered one-dimensional channel in IV and the ZnO3N pillar, along with infinite Zn-O-Zn linkages in V, are novel features. The structure of the open-framework zinc phosphates is found to depend sensitively on the relative concentrations of the amine and phosphoric acid, with high concentrations of the latter favoring structures with lower dimensions.
