On systems of binomials in the ideal of a toric variety

Let be a toric set in the affine space . Given a set of binomials in the toric ideal of , we give a criterion for deciding the equality rad( ) = . This criterion extends to arbitrary dimension, and to arbitrary fields, an earlier result which concerned only monomial curves over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.

     

Covalent grafting of ethylene glycol and glycerol into brucite

Layered brucite was synthesized at room temperature and, after characterization, was reacted in a closed flask with either ethylene glycol or glycerol. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns have shown that new compounds with interlayer expansions were obtained. New bands attributed to grafting of ethylene glycol and glycerol into the interlayer surface of brucite were detected by FTIR. XPS spectroscopy and thermal analyses (TG/DSC) have shown that nearly all of the hydroxide groups of the layers were replaced by either ethylene glycol or glycerol through Mg-O-C bonds.     

Bis(isoquinoline N-oxide) pincers as a new type of metal cation dual channel fluorosensor

[structure: see text] A new type of donor-spacer-acceptor podand system has been synthesized and proved as an efficient dual channel fluorosensor for Li+, Mg2+, and Ca2+. The known ability for the N-oxide function to bind Lewis acids is the key step in the appearance of a new emitting charge-transfer (CT) excited state. The occurrence of this CT state for alkaline earth (Mg2+ and Ca2+) and not for alkaline metals (Li+) provided a new type of dual channel fluorosensors.     

Expansive dynamics and hyperbolic geometry

LetM be a compact Riemannian manifold with no conjugate points such that its geodesic flow is expansive. Then we show that the universal Riemannian covering ofM is a hyperbolic geodesic space according to the definition of M. Gromov. This allows us to extend a series of relevant geometric and topological properties of negatively curved manifolds toM and in particular, geometric group theory applies to the fundamental group ofM.     

Synthesis of 4-substituted 5,6-diphenylmorpholine-2,3-diones with two or three chiral centers

Chiral α-aminoalcohols obtained by stereoselective reduction of α-iminoketones have been condensed with oxalyl chloride to afford 4-substituted 5,6-diphenylmorpholine-2,3-diones having two or three chiral centers.     

Statistics of Yang-Mills solitons

We determine the statistics and the spin of isolated Yang-Mills monopoles in eigenstates of their electric and magnetic charge. Exchange of solitons is defined using the translation operator of a companion paper; and under exchange, state vectors representingN identical solitons change sign precisely when the angular momentum of each soliton is half-integral.
