Conformational analysis—133: 3,3-dimethyl-2,4-pentanedione. The importance of induction and solvationTetrahedron 34, 3385 (1978).

The conformations of the title compound have been analyzed in detail with respect to steric interaction energies, charge interaction energies, and solvation energies in heptane and benzene. Using previously developed methods, which include induction by dipoles in polarizable bonds, and the solvation of molecular dipoles and quadrupoles, predictions regarding the conformational equilibrium are made. These were tested by experimental determination of the dipole moment of the molecule in heptane and benzene, and are in agreement with the predictions. More simplified calculations lead to qualitatively erroneous results.     

Measurement of Upsilon production for p + p and p + d interactions at 800 GeV/c

We report a high statistics measurement of Upsilon production with an 800 GeV/c proton beam on hydrogen and deuterium targets. The dominance of the gluon-gluon fusion process for Upsilon production at this energy implies that the cross section ratio, sigma(p+d-->Upsilon)/2sigma(p+p-->Upsilon), is sensitive to the gluon content in the neutron relative to that in the proton. Isospin mixing in 12C

We observe a yield to the 1⁺T = 1 level in ¹²C at 15.11 MeV in the isospin forbidden ¹²C(d, d') and ¹⁰B(α, d) reactions at about 1 % of the yield to the 1⁺T = 0 level at 12.71 MeV. Observed yields to the T = 12⁺ level at 16.11 MeV in both reactions at about half the yield to the 15.11 MeV level preclude attributing this observed isospin violation entirely to final state mixing. From the ratios of the spectroscopic factors for the 12.71 and 15.11 MeV levels in ¹²C and the ground state of ¹²B from the ¹³C(d, t) and ¹³C(d, ³He) reactions, we find a charge dependent matrix element between the 1⁺ states in ¹²C of 179 ± 75 keV.     

Asymptotic normalization coefficients and astrophysical direct capture rates

Peripheral transfer reactions can be used to determine asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs). These coefficients, which specify the normalization of the tail of the nuclear overlap function, determine S-factors for direct capture reactions at astrophysical energies. A variety of proton transfer reactions involving both stable and radioactive beams have been used to measure ANCs. Tests have demonstrated that ANCs determined from proton transfer reactions can be used to calculate astrophysical direct capture rates to within 9%. The ¹⁰B(⁷Be, ⁸B)⁹Be and ¹⁴N(⁷Be, ⁸B)¹³C reactions have been used to measure the ANC appropriate for determining the ⁷Be(p,γ)⁸B rate, and the ¹⁴N(¹¹C, ¹²N)¹³C reaction has been used to measure the ANC required to calculate the ¹¹C(p,γ)¹²N rate. Error Bounds for Hermite Interpolation by Quadratic Splines on an {alpha}-Triangulation

For l, an -triangulation F of a planar domain is such that,for every T F, there holds 1 R_T/2r_T , where R_T (resp. r_T)denotes the radius of the circumscribed (resp. inscribed) circleof the triangle T. When T is varying in F the centre of itsinscribed circle is varying in a compact interior to T and itsorthogonal projections on the sides are varying in compact intervalsinterior to these sides. Precise results are given about thesizes of these compacts and are used for the computation oferror constants in the problem of Hermite interpolation by Powell-Sabinquadratic finite elements, bringing to the fore their dependenceon the parameter .

肉苁蓉 Cistanche Salsa(C.A.Mey.)G.Beak 是列当科 Orobanchaceae 植物肉苁蓉的肉质茎;又名大芸,纵蓉。它分布在北疆地区荒漠戈壁地带,有益肾壮阳,延年益寿等功能,故有“沙漠人参”之称。肉苁蓉是一种常用的中药,新疆地区资源丰富,其精油化学成分在国内外未见报道。为了整理和发掘祖国医药学宝库,我们对其化学成分进行了研究。     

Extreme \alpha -clustering in the 18O nucleus

The structure of the ¹⁸O nucleus at excitation energies above the $ \alpha$ decay threshold was studied using ¹⁴C + $ \alpha$ resonance elastic scattering. A number of states with large $ \alpha$ reduced widths have been observed, indicating that the $ \alpha$ -cluster degree of freedom plays an important role in this N $ \ne$ Z nucleus. A 0⁺ state with an $ \alpha$ reduced width exceeding the single-particle limit was identified at an excitation energy of 9.9±0.3 MeV. We discuss evidence that states of this kind are common in light nuclei and give possible explanations of this feature.     

Comparative study of compound components in N(N, α) and C(O, α) reactions

Experimental spectra of the reaction ¹⁴N(¹⁴N, α) were measured at 111 MeV. Continuum spectra extending to high excitation energy of ²⁴Mg do not show any structure which is completely at variance with the reaction ¹²C(¹⁶O, α). A compound evaporation calculation reproduces the smooth components of the spectra of both reactions. The same theoretical prediction, however, seems to contradict the conjecture that the compound process yields the broad peaks in the ¹²C(¹⁶O, α) reaction.     

The mass of 15B via a three-proton stripping reaction

The isotope ¹⁵B was produced via the reaction ⁴⁸Ca(¹⁸O, ¹⁵B)⁵¹V. The Q-value and mass excess were determined to be ?21.76 ± 0.05 MeV and 28.96 ± 0.05 MeV, respectively. A search for the isotope ¹⁴Be was unsuccessful.     

Experimental constraints on left-right symmetric models from muon decay

The TWIST Collaboration has completed a new measurement of the energy-angle spectrum of positrons from the decay of highly polarized muons. A simultaneous measurement of the muon decay parameters ρ, δ, and P(μ)(π)ξ tests the standard model in a purely leptonic process and provides improved limits for relevant extensions to the standard model. Specifically, for the generalized left-right symmetric model |(g(R)/g(L))ζ|<0.020 and (g(L)/g(R))m(2)>578 GeV/c(2), both 90% C.L.
