Surface plasmons at the metal–dielectric interface have emerged as an important candidate to propagate and localize light at subwavelength scales. By tailoring the geometry and arrangement of metallic nanoarchitectures, propagating and localized surface plasmons can be obtained. In this brief perspective, we discuss: (1) how surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and localized surface plasmons (LSPs) can be optically excited in metallic nanoarchitectures by employing a variety of optical microscopy methods; (2) how SPPs and LSPs in plasmonic nanowires can be utilized for subwavelength polarization optics and single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) on a photonic chip; and (3) how individual plasmonic nanowire can be optically manipulated using optical trapping methods. 相似文献

Studies related to the effect of pre-ionizer on laser output energy of a repetitively pulsed KrF laser are presented. The dependence of laser output energy, spectral width and beam spot homogeneity on pre-ionization parameters, namely its current and voltage rise time are reported here. Here, effectiveness of pre-ionization is optimized by improving pre-ionization current and rise time of the pump pulse of the automatic UV pre-ionizer KrF laser. It is observed that by increasing pre-ionization current from 6 kA to 10.6 kA, the output energy increases by about 30% (from 100 to 130 mJ). It is also observed that the emission spectral width reduces by almost 60% by increasing the pre-ionization current. Regular homogeneous and well-developed beam spot (nearly Hat-Top profile) was achieved under these optimized conditions. 相似文献

The success of carbon capture and storage (CCS) programme relies on the long-term isolation of CO2 from the atmosphere. Therefore, technologies concomitant to physical storage of CO2 such as reliable measurement, monitoring, and verification (MMV) techniques are needed to ensure that the integrity of the storage site is maintained. We propose the use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analytical technique to detect carbon dioxide leaks to aid in the successful application of CCS. LIBS has a real-time monitoring capability and can be reliably used for the elemental and isotopic analysis of solid, liquid, and gas samples. The flexibility of probe design and use of fibre optics make it a suitable technique for real time measurements in harsh conditions and at hard-to-reach places. Proposed monitoring with LIBS includes terrestrial soil samples, water samples from monitoring wells or from different formations, air samples from monitoring wells or suspected leakage areas. This work details the laboratory scale experiments to measure carbon contents in rock, soil, aqueous, and air samples. The potential of the technology for measurements in high pressure high-temperature conditions will also be discussed. 相似文献

Abstract Sustained droughts coupled with increasing pressure from urbanization severely test the ability of farmers to continue in agriculture. Understanding farmers' resilience to such pressures is increasingly becoming a significant policy concern. In this paper, a new measure of resilience to severe and sustained droughts in agriculture is derived as the ability to continue farming by saving and carrying forward water through the adoption of water efficient technology. In addition, the role of behavioral factors—such as subjective risk perception over the probability of droughts, of the probability of land getting urbanized, and of resistance to revising beliefs over water scarcity situation—in determining farmers' resilience to droughts is explored. Findings highlight the key role played by behavioral factors in influencing the decision to adopt when the economic factors, such as the price of water, do not capture the true opportunity costs of water. The range of available technological options is found to be crucial too, as marginal improvements in technology do not encourage adoption. An empirical application to the case of lettuce farming in Western Australia reveals that in the presence of speculative benefits from land rezoning, technological adoption is done only for enhancing profits in agriculture and not for improving resilience to droughts. Land rezoning possibilities may further distort technology adoption decisions, thereby, reducing resilience to droughts. 相似文献

A numerical study is conducted to simulate the effects of extraneous shock impingement on a blunt body in viscous hypersonic flow. The interaction of extraneous shock with the leading-edge shock results in a very complex flow field that contains local regions of high pressure and intense heating. The heating and pressure can be orders of magnitude higher than the peak values in the absence of shock impingement. The flow field is calculated by solving thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations with a finite-volume flux splitting technique developed by van Leer. For a zero or small sweep of the body, a type IV interaction occurs, which produces a lambda shock structure with a supersonic jet embedded in the otherwise subsonic flow; for a moderate sweep of about 25°, a type V interaction occurs in which a subsonic shear layer sandwiched in supersonic flow is produced with a transmitted shock. In the present study, both type IV and type V interactions are investigated. Results of the present numerical investigation are compared with available experimental results. For the present conditions, the peak pressure is 2.2 times the unimpinged stagnation point pressure and the peak heating is 3 times the unimpinged stagnation point heating. We investigate the influence of dispersion interaction on a variety of thermodynamic properties of discotic nematic liquid crystals at the discotic nematic-isotropic transition. We report calculations for a hard oblate ellipsoidal system, superposed with an attractive interaction represented by dispersion interaction subjected to different external pressures ranging from 1 to 300 bar. We consider a model system (which simulates a discotic nematic liquid crystal) in which molecules are assumed to interact via a pair potential having both repulsive and attractive parts. The repulsion part is represented by a repulsion between hard oblate ellipsoids of revolution and is a short range, rapidly varying potential. The attractive potential, a function of centre of mass distance and relative orientation between two molecules, is represented by dispersion interaction. The properties of the reference system and first order perturbation term are evaluated using a decoupling approximation which decouples orientational from translational degrees of freedom. The inclusion of fourth and sixth rank orientational order parameters in the calculation slightly improves the result. The role of pressure on phase transition parameters has also been studied. 相似文献

The commercially available solid state nuclear track detector CR-39 was bombarded with 100 MeV Si8+ ions. The Fourier transfonned infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic technique was employed for studying the changes in chemical properties whereas differential scanning calorimetry was used for studying the changes in thermal properties. It was observed that there were substantial chemical modifications in the sample, such as the breaking of C-0 single bonds and the formation of phenolic 0-H bonds. lt was further observed that CR-39 is amorphous and rigid and shows no glass transition temperature. 相似文献

Ground state and excited state properties of ethylene, C2H4, and several ethylene isomers have been studied by Feynman path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations. The PIMC treatment of the atomic nuclei has been combined with different electronic Hamiltonians in order to analyse the influence of the nuclear degrees of freedom on electronic quantities. Electronic expectation values at the minimum of the potential energy surface (PES) have been compared with PIMC based ensemble averaged values. Ensemble averaged quantities have been derived by Hamiltonians of the ab initio type and a tight-binding (TB) one-electron model. The combined influence of anharmonicities in the interatomic potential and the quantum fluctuations of the atomic nuclei lead to ensemble averaged bondlengths r g which are significantly larger than the parameters r e, at the minimum of the PES. The implications of this bond length elongation for the electronic properties of ethylene are discussed. The occupied canonical molecular orbitals (CMOs) of ethylene are destabilized under the influence of the nuclear degrees of freedom while virtual CMOs are stabilized. These shifts of one-electron energies suggest a comparison of electronic excitation energies at the minimum of the PES with PIMC based ensemble averages. The quantum fluctuations of the nuclei cause a strong redistribution in the intensities of electronic transitions. Transitions, which are dipole allowed in the planar D2h geometry of ethylene, lose intensity under the influence of nuclear quantum effects, and vice versa for electronic excitations that are dipole forbidden under D2h symmetry. This ‘vibrational borrowing’ is enhanced with decreasing atomic masses. The Feynman centroid density has been used to calculate the anharmonic vibrational wavenumbers of C2H4 and C2D4. The results of the present PIMC simulations have been employed to emphasize general problems of electronic structure calculations based on a single nuclear configuration (i.e. the configuration at the minimum of the PES). 相似文献
