Constituents of holothuroidea.9. Isolation and structure of a new ganglioside molecular species from the sea cucumber Holothuria pervicax

A new ganglioside molecular species, HPG-7 (1) was obtained from the polar fraction of the chloroform/methanol extract of the sea cucumber, Holothuria pervicax. On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence, the structure of 1 was determined, and the major component was 1-O-[alpha-L-fucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-(N-acetyl-alpha-D-neuraminosyl) - (2-->11)-(N-glycolyl-alpha-D-neuraminosyl)-(2-->4)-(N-acetyl -alpha-D- neuraminosyl)-(2-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-(2S,3S,4R)-2-[(2R)-2- hydroxytetracosanoylamino]-14-methyl-hexadecane-1,3,4-triol. This is the first report on the isolation and structure elucidation of trisialo-ganglioside from sea cucumber. 1 showed neuritogenic activity toward the rat pheochromocytoma cell line, PC-12 cell.     

Stabilization of Graphite Nitrate by Intercalation of Organic Compounds

New thermally stable intercalation compounds of graphite were obtained by the further intercalation of a series of organic compounds into graphite nitrate. The stabilization is explained by the formation of hydrogen bonds between the protonated form of the modifying substance and neutral surrounding molecules.     

Effect of Mechanochemical Activation on the Catalytic Properties of Ferrites with the Spinel Structure

It was found experimentally that stacking defects formed in the mechanochemical activation of zinc ferrite enhanced the specific catalytic activity in the reaction of CO oxidation. The specific rate of CO oxidation was a linear function of defect concentration, which was determined using Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. A conclusion was drawn that the same centers are responsible for an increase in the catalytic activity, the sorption capacity for hydrogen sulfide, and the reactivity of zinc ferrite in the interaction with hydrochloric acid. It was assumed that analogous factors caused an increase in the catalytic activity and reactivity of magnesium ferrite.     

Action of nucleophilic agents on the pyrimidine ring

It is shown that 2-alkylpyrimidine methiodides in which the alkyl group is activated by electron-acceptor substituents undergo recyclization to the corresponding 2-methylaminopyridines in an alcohol solution of methylamine. Similar recyclization also takes place without quaternization of the pyrimidine ring when there is a strong electron-acceptor substituent (a nitro group) in the ring.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 10, pp. 1400–1405, October, 1978.

On the Dispersion of Metals in Supported Catalysts. II. Small Angle X-ray Investigation. on Platinum/Alumina and Palladium/Alumina Catalysts The metal dispersion in 0.5% Pd/A1₂O₃. 0.5°% Pt/Al₂O₃ abd 1.5% Pt/Al₂O₃ catalysts was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering, Using a Kratky camera the difference scattering curves catalyst-carrier were evaluated. The assumption was made that the scattering centres are globular and that there is no interparticular scattering. From the Guinier approximation the Guinier radii R_G of the metal particles were determined. With the Pd catalyst always positive difference scattering curves were found, whereas negative values were found with the Pt catalysts at a scattering angle greater than 0.022 rad. Therefore only for the sample with 0.5% Pd the Porod invariant \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm \tilde Q}$\end{document} and the Porod radius R_P could be determined. From R_G and R_P the parameters of a two- and of a one-parametric distribution were calculated. The results are in good agreement with data from wide angle X-ray diffraction measurements.     

Optical and photochemical properties of N-benzalaminophenylpyridinium perchlorates

The electronic spectra of a number of benzylidene derivatives of N-aminoarylpyridinium perchlorates are associated with absorption localized on the individual pyridinium and azomethine fragments and with intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the azomethine fragment to the pyridinium ring. The luminescence is associated with the latter process. The photochromism is due to proton transfer in the excited state of the azomethine fragment, which competes with ICT, and is also due to structural factors.
