Combined gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry using laser photodissociation

Two fibre-optic interfaces were constructed for laser photodissociation/tandem mass spectrometry using an ion trap spectrometer. These interfaces allow sample introduction from a liquid reservoir, solids probe and gas chromatograph. The laser/ion trap configuration was applied to the analysis of a mixture of alkylbenenes separated by gas chromatography using 573 nm photons.     

Laser nanosources based on planar photonic crystals as new platforms for nanophotonic devices

Two-dimensional photonic crystal lasers have been fabricated on III–V semiconductor slabs. Tuning of the spontaneous emission in micro and nanocavities has been achieved by accurate control of the slab thickness. Different structures, some of them of new application to photonic crystal lasers, have been fabricated like the Suzuki-phase or the coupled-cavity ring-like resonators. Laser emission has been obtained by pulsed optical pumping. Optical characterization of the lasing modes have been performed showing one or more laser peaks centred around 1.55 μm. Far field characterization of the emission pattern has been realized showing different patterns depending on the geometrical shape of the structures. These kinds of devices may be used as efficient nanolaser sources for optical communications or optical sensors.     

Differential effects of synchronous and asynchronous multifinger coactivation on human tactile performance

Background  

Repeated execution of a tactile task enhances task performance. In the present study we sought to improve tactile performance with unattended activation-based learning processes (i.e., focused stimulation of dermal receptors evoking neural coactivation (CA)). Previous studies show that the application of CA to a single finger reduced the stationary two-point discrimination threshold and significantly increased tactile acuity. These changes were accompanied by an expansion of the cortical finger representation in primary somatosensory cortex (SI). Here we investigated the effect of different types of multifinger CA on the tactile performance of each finger of the right hand.     

Phenomenological description of a giant temperature hysteresis of ultrasound velocity and internal friction in lanthanum manganite

We propose an explanation for the experimentally observed [1] giant temperature hysteresis of the ultrasound velocity and internal friction in single crystals of lanthanum manganite (La_0.8Sr_0.2MnO₃). The effect is interpreted within the framework of a phenomenological model based on the notion of two coexisting sublattices of the oxygen octahedra performing cooperative tilting-rotational oscillations in bistable potential fields.     

Excitation of localized spatial structures of different symmetry in a system of two thin films

We consider spatial dissipative solitons arising in the system of two nonlinear thin films which interact resonantly with light. Symmetric and nonsymmetric solitons and methods of their exciting and switching are studied.     

High-performance liquid chromatographic determination of morphine and its 3- and 6-glucuronide metabolites: improvements to the method and application to stability studies

Improvements to previously reported methods for the determination of morphine, morphine-3-glucuronide (M3G) and morphine-6-glucuronide (M6G) in human plasma are described. The improved methods involve the use of a solid-phase extraction cartridge and a chromatographic system which uses paired-ion reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with a radially compressed column. Only one cartridge is used to prepare each sample for chromatography and each cartridge may be used for at least fourteen 1-ml plasma samples. The recovery is greater than 85%. The improvements to the method of sample pretreatment and in the chromatographic conditions have allowed determination of morphine, M3G and M6G in human plasma down to 13.3 nmol/l (coefficient of variation = 9.3%), 108 nmol/l (6.6%) and 41 nmol/l (6.7%), respectively, using ultraviolet detection alone. It was shown that all three compounds were stable in plasma for up to 101 weeks when stored at -20 degrees C.     

Synthesis and polymerization of o-hexylaniline: Characterization of the corresponding polyaniline

In the field of research on soluble conducting polymers, the poly(o-alkylanilines) are very interesting because we can expect them to give more soluble polymers and new properties. Like poly(o-propylaniline) (POP), which is more soluble than polyaniline (PANi), poly(o-hexylaniline) (POH) appears to be more soluble in organic solvents than POP because of the longer alkyl groups in the 2-position. The higher solubility confers better processability on this new polymer, and because of this solubility, an NMR study in solution became possible.The nitration of hexylbenzene and the reduction of the resulting product to o-hexylaniline were performed according to the literature. The chemical polymerization was easy and it is possible to produce this polymer in large quantities.The polymerization carried out in anhydrous NH₄F, 2.35 HF medium and in 5 M perchloric acid gave a polymer with almost quantitative yield. The electrochemical behaviour of POH displayed faster electron transfers than PANi in organic solvents, depending on the acido-basicity level of the aqueous solutions. Unlike PANi, fractal growth was not observed.     

Differential Conditions for Constrained Nonlinear Programming via Pareto Optimization

We deal with the differential conditions for local optimality. The conditions that we derive for inequality constrained problems do not require constraint qualifications and are the broadest conditions based on only first-order and second-order derivatives. A similar result is proved for equality constrained problems, although the necessary conditions require the regularity of the equality constraints.
