Shear-induced band texture of side group liquid crystalline polymers

The shear-induced band texture of conventional end-on fixed side group liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) has been investigated by using polarizing optical microscopy (POM), small angle light scattering (SALS) and infra-red dichroism techniques. The band spacing is about 1 μm, which increases very slightly on increasing the temperature of shearing and is independent of shearing rate within the range studied. The band texture is not seen to exhibit an interchange of dark and bright bands on rotation of the sample with respect to the polarizer/analyser, but a typical periodical structure is reflected by the SALS patterns of the band texture. The relaxation behaviour of the bands indicates that the band texture formed here is the result of the orderly aligning of domains exhibiting the focal-conic texture, and this is totally different from the case of main chain LCPs where the band texture is substantially an optical effect of the periodic zigzag or sinusoidal structure of parallel aligned microfibrils. Infra-red dichroism and rotating parallel-plate shearing measurements show that the axes of the backbone of the polymer tend to orient in the shearing direction and the end-on fixed mesogenic side groups tend to align perpendicular to the shearing direction.     

A Novel Approach to the Stereoselective Synthesis of (E)-1-(1-Alkenyl)Benzotriazoles

The Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination of diethyl-(1-benzotri-azolmethyl)phosphonate by means of aldehydes was found to be a convenient method for the stereoselective preparation of (E)-1-(1-Alkenyl)benzotriazoles.     

一种CO2的矿化封存新方法

针对目前CO2矿化封存的研究现状,提出了一种新的CO2矿化封存方法:利用CO2和NH3反应生成三聚氰酸固体,并考察了温度、压力、反应物配比及有无催化剂对三聚氰酸收率的影响。当反应条件为在250℃,22MPa,NH3与CO2反应配比为1∶1.4,反应8h时,最高收率可达到68.3%。此项技术能够与现在工业成熟的富氧燃烧技术联用,实现对CO2的永久性封存,具有经济效益。     

A 4-aminonaphthalimide based environmentally sensitive fluorescence probe

A simply synthesized 4-aminonaphthalimide derivative 1 expresses both polarity and viscosity sensitive fluorescence spectra, indicating its potential usage as an environmentally sensitive fluorescence probe. By comparing the fluorescence behavior of 1 with that of a known 4-aminonaphthalimide derivative 2, it was found that the substitution of the 4-amino group has profound influence on the environmentally sensitive fluorescence properties of 4-aminonaphthalimide.     

Controlled release of acetochlor from poly (butyl methacrylate-diacetone acrylamide) based formulation prepared by nanoemulsion polymerisation method and evaluation of the efficacy

Acetochlor is an important herbicide for gramineous weeds and some small seed broadleaf weeds. Controlled-release formulations of herbicide are highly desirable not only for attaining the most effective utilisation of the weed control, but also for reducing environmental pollution. Acetochlor was incorporated in poly (butyl methacrylate-diacetone acrylamide) based formulation to obtain controlled release properties. The acetochlor nanocapsules were characterised by size distribution, infrared spectroscopy (IR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and factors related to loading efficiency, swelling behaviour of the formulation were investigated. For this controlled-release formulation, the loading efficiency could reach about 50% (w/w). n, the diffusion parameter was indicative of the transport mechanism, and the values for ‘n’ were in the range of 0.28–0.61, which indicated that the release of acetochlor was diffusion-controlled. The time taken for 50% of the active ingredient to be released into water, t₅₀, was also calculated for the comparison of formulations in different conditions. The formulation with higher temperature and more diacetone acrylamide had lower value of t₅₀, which means a quicker release of the active ingredient. This study highlighted some pieces of evidence that improved herbicide incorporation and slower release were linked to potential interactions between the herbicide and the polymer.     

Ferroelectric liquid crystals with axially chiral 2,2′-spirobiindan-1,1′-dione cores

The axially chiral mesogens 5-alkoxy-5′-[(4-alkoxybenzoyl)oxy]-2,2′-spirobiindan-1,1′-dione (QL7-n) were synthesised as racemic mixtures and resolved as single enantiomers by preparative chiral phase HPLC. The shorter homologues (R)-QL7-8 and QL7-9 form enantiotropic N* and SmC* phases, whereas the longer homologues (R)-QL7-10 and QL7-12 form an enantiotropic SmC* phase only. Texture analysis showed that the helical pitch of the N* phase is below the wavelength range of visible light; a helical pitch of 187 nm was measured at T – T_NI = –5 K by selective reflection using enantiomerically enriched mixtures of (R)- and (S)-QL7-8 (0.35 ≤ ee ≤ 0.80). Spontaneous polarisations were measured as a function of temperature in the SmC* phase by the triangular wave method. P_S values at saturation range from 102 nC cm^–2 for (R)-QL7-8 to 120 nC cm^?2 for (R)-QL7-9, which are up to three times greater than the highest polarisation previously reported for an axially chiral SmC* mesogen. Optical tilt angles θ were measured as a function of temperature and showed a sharp rise consistent with first-order N*–SmC* or I–SmC* transitions, with values at saturation ranging from 42 to 44°.

An efficient Cu-catalyzed C–H amination of 2-alkylazaarenes with azodicarboxylates has been developed through nucleophilic addition of sp³C–H bond to unsaturated nitrogen–nitrogen double bond. It provides an easy access to azaarene-containing hydrazines from simple and easily available starting materials.
