Bayesian source detection and parameter estimation of a plume model based on sensor network measurements

We consider a network of sensors that measure the intensities of a complex plume composed of multiple absorption–diffusion source components. We address the problem of estimating the plume parameters, including the spatial and temporal source origins and the parameters of the diffusion model for each source, based on a sequence of sensor measurements. The approach not only leads to multiple‐source detection, but also the characterization and prediction of the combined plume in space and time. The parameter estimation is formulated as a Bayesian inference problem, and the solution is obtained using a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. The approach is applied to a simulation study, which shows that an accurate parameter estimation is achievable. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Control of friction at the nanoscale

We propose a new algorithm to control frictional dynamics of a small array of particles towards preassigned values of the average sliding velocity. The control is based on the concepts of non-Lipschitzian dynamics and terminal attractor. Extensive numerical simulations illustrate the robustness, efficiency, and convenience of the algorithm.     

Spin-parity analysis of the B meson

We have done a J^P analysis of the low-mass π⁺ω system, using the reaction π⁺p→π⁺ωp at 7.1 GeV/c.     

Synthesis of cytotoxic cyanobactin,Wewakazole B

We report herein the synthesis of cytotoxic cyanobactin, Wewakazole B through an efficient solution-phase approach. The key steps of the synthesis are the macrocyclic lactamization of linear dodecapeptide and construction of two hexapeptides with three different substituted oxazole rings.     

Analysis of the Kω spectrum

We present results of a spin-parity analysis of the Kω system from threshold to 1.52 MeV based on 12 500 events of the type K^?p→K^?π⁺π^?π^op at 7.3 GeV/c. We also present evidence for a possible resonant state decaying into Kω at a mass 1710 ± 15 MeV and width 110 ± 50 MeV.     

Exact solutions for a semilinear hyperbolic system with general quadratic interactions

Summary The approximate conservation laws for a binary gas mixture with quadratic interactions can be written as a system of two semilinear hyperbolic equations. By using the method of characteristics the study of this system is reduced to the study of a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, for which we find several classes of exact solutions. Exact integrability conditions are found for ODE systems of generalized Lotka-Volterra type. Some situations are also considered, in which the characteristic method cannot be applied and exact solutions are obtained via an operator method.     

Transport equations with boundary conditions of reverse reflection type

A study is performed of transport equations on arbitrary three-dimensional domains with boundary conditions of reverse reflection type. The existence of the dominant eigenvalue of the criticality problem is proved and its independence of the functional setting and its continuous dependence on a variety of data are established. The corresponding time-dependent problem is shown to be well-posed, also for a conservative boundary. The relationship between the criticality and the time-dependent problem is given explicitly.
