Light-Based 3D Printing of Gelatin-Based Biomaterial Inks to Create a Physiologically Relevant In Vitro Fish Intestinal Model

To provide prominent accessibility of fishmeal to the European population, the currently available, time- and cost-extensive feeding trials, which evaluate fish feed, should be replaced. The current paper reports on the development of a novel 3D culture platform, mimicking the microenvironment of the intestinal mucosa in vitro. The key requirements of the model include sufficient permeability for nutrients and medium-size marker molecules (equilibrium within 24 h), suitable mechanical properties (G' < 10 kPa), and close morphological similarity to the intestinal architecture. To enable processability with light-based 3D printing, a gelatin-methacryloyl-aminoethyl-methacrylate-based biomaterial ink is developed and combined with Tween 20 as porogen to ensure sufficient permeability. To assess the permeability properties of the hydrogels, a static diffusion setup is utilized, indicating that the hydrogel constructs are permeable for a medium size marker molecule (FITC-dextran 4 kg mol⁻¹). Moreover, the mechanical evaluation through rheology evidence a physiologically relevant scaffold stiffness (G' = 4.83 ± 0.78 kPa). Digital light processing-based 3D printing of porogen-containing hydrogels results in the creation of constructs exhibiting a physiologically relevant microarchitecture as evidenced through cryo-scanning electron microscopy. Finally, the combination of the scaffolds with a novel rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) intestinal epithelial cell line (RTdi-MI) evidence scaffold biocompatibility.     

H2O2–Ng dynamics predictions using an accurate potential energy surface

ABSTRACT

Based on ab initio calculations, our research group has built an analytical ground-state potential energy surface (PES) for hydrogen peroxide– noble gas (Ng) interactions, such as H₂O₂–He, H₂O₂–Ne, H₂O₂–Ar, H₂O₂–Kr, and H₂O₂–Xe complexes. From this PES, it was verified that the Ng presence does not affect the equilibrium values of the H₂O₂ dihedral angles. This happens because the H₂O₂ intramolecular barriers have much higher energies than the atom–bond interaction within these complexes. From this point of view, it is indeed reasonable to consider the H₂O₂ system as a rigid rotor, frozen at its equilibrium configuration. We present in this work the torsional motion for the H₂O₂ isolated system, the vibration–rotation energy levels and spectroscopic constants for hydrogen peroxide–noble gas by using the aforementioned PES. The predicted H₂O₂ torsional motions are in good agreement with both theoretical and experimental results available in the literature. Regarding H₂O₂–Ng ro-vibrational energies and spectroscopic constants, it is the first time that these calculations are presented in the literature. The current theoretical predictions are expected to be useful in the future experimental investigations.     

On the Massive Antenna Suspension System in the Brazilian Gravitational Wave Detector SCHENBERG

SCHENBERG is a resonant-mass gravitational wave detector built in Brazil. Its spherical antenna, weighting 1.15 t, is connected to the outside world by a suspension system whose main function is to attenuate the external seismic noise. In this work, we report how the system was modeled using finite elements method. The model was validated on experimental data. The simulation showed that the attenuation obtained is of the order of 260 dB, which is sufficient for decreasing the seismic noise below the level of the thermal noise of the detector operating at 50 mK.     

Morphology of Imidazolium‐Based Ionic Liquids as Deposited by Vapor Deposition: Micro‐/Nanodroplets and Thin Films

The morphology of micro‐ and nanodroplets and thin films of ionic liquids (ILs) prepared through physical vapor deposition is presented. The morphology of droplets deposited on indium‐tin‐oxide‐coated glass is presented for the extended 1‐alkyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C_nC₁im][Ntf₂]; n=1–8) series, and the results show the nanostructuration of ILs. The use of in‐vacuum energetic particles enhances/increases the nanodroplets mobility/coalescence mechanisms and can be a pathway to the fabrication of thin IL films.     

The Feynman Identity for Planar Graphs

The Feynman identity (FI) of a planar graph relates the Euler polynomial of the graph to an infinite product over the equivalence classes of closed nonperiodic signed cycles in the graph. The main objectives of this paper are to compute the number of equivalence classes of nonperiodic cycles of given length and sign in a planar graph and to interpret the data encoded by the FI in the context of free Lie superalgebras. This solves in the case of planar graphs a problem first raised by Sherman and sets the FI as the denominator identity of a free Lie superalgebra generated from a graph. Other results are obtained. For instance, in connection with zeta functions of graphs.
