Small-angle neutron scattering studies were used to investigate the effect of adding an alcohol ethoxylate nonionic surfactant (d-C12E20) to aqueous solutions of a cationic surfactant, erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl) methylammonium chloride (EHAC), with and without salt (KCl). The systematic use of contrast-matching, by alternately highlighting or hiding one of the surfactants, confirms that mixed micelles are formed. In salt-free solutions, mixed spherical micelles are formed and a core-shell model combined with a Hayter-Penfold potential was used to describe the data. The core radius is dominated by the EHAC tails and the outer radius determined by the ethoxylate headgroups of the nonionic surfactant. Addition of KCl promotes micellar growth; however, results of varying the solvent contrast revealed that when the nonionic surfactant is incorporated into the wormlike structure micellar breaking is promoted. Thus, mixed wormlike micelles with shorter contour lengths compared to the pure EHAC worms are formed. 相似文献
Previous research has shown a strong correlation of protein folding rates to the native state geometry, yet a complete explanation for this dependence is still lacking. Here we study the rate-geometry relationship with a simple statistical physics model, and focus on two classes of model geometries, representing ideal parallel and antiparallel structures. We find that the logarithm of the rate shows an almost perfect linear correlation with the "absolute contact order", but the slope depends on the particular class considered. We discuss these findings in the light of experimental results. 相似文献
A method for the determination of the organic acids directly in the urine employing derivatization with trimethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate as a methylating agent and sequential extraction by head space and direct immersion/solid phase microextraction is reported. Furoic acid, hippuric acid, methylhippuric acid, mandelic acid, phenylglyoxylic acid and trans, trans muconic acid contained in urine and proposed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists as biological exposure indices were determined after a fast and economically convenient preparation step and sensitive gas chromatography-ion trap-mass spectrometry/tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Urine is rather a complex sample and hence the acquisition method required specific GC-MS instrumentation capable of supporting the changeover, fully automated during a single chromatographic separation, from mass to tandem mass spectrometry and both chemical and electron ionization modes. The automation of the analytical method provides a number of advantages, including reduced analysis time for both routine analysis and method development, and greater reproducibility. The equilibrium and kinetics of this substances vs head space/direct immersion-solid phase microextraction were investigated and evaluated theoretically. 相似文献
A numerical procedure for the prediction of fogging and defogging phenomena is presented. The simulation involves the solution of an air flow field along a cold solid surface, the evaluation of the unsteady conduction through the solid itself, and a model for the heat and mass transfer within the thin water layer on the fogged surface. A suite of routines for the unsteady simulation of the water layer evolution is coupled with an equal order finite element Navier Stokes solver and a finite volume conduction code. The procedure is fully independent of the numerical details of the solid and fluid domain solvers. Two different coupling approaches may be followed: A loose one, where the Navier Stokes solution is used only for a steady state estimate of the heat transfer coefficient, or a close one, where the Navier Stokes, conduction and water layer codes are iterated simultaneously. The latter is required for the problem of natural convection, where temperature (and thus the energy balance of the water layer) and flow field are coupled. The water layer is modelled as a collection of closely packed tiny droplets, leaving a portion of dry area among them. The effect of the contact angle is taken into account, and physical assumptions allow to define the local ratio between wet and dry surface for both the fogging and defogging process. As a case study, a comparison with experimental data for a complete fogging and defogging cycle of a glass lens in natural convection is presented. 相似文献
The behavior of cable structures, widely employed in several engineering fields, is highly non-linear. A common procedure to treat the cables is to substitute them with straight rods assuring an equivalent stiffness. But classical methods allow to determine satisfactorily the equivalent stiffness only when the cable is sensibly stretched, the cable sag is small and the cable is horizontal, since they generally disregard the effects of the self-weight component along the chord. To study non-linear behavior of inclined cables, we extend here a rational criterion stemming from the virtual work principle, formerly proposed for horizontal cables. 相似文献
Light-based events in insects deserve increasing attention for various reasons. Besides their roles in inter- and intra-specific visual communication, with biological, ecological and taxonomical implications, optical properties are also promising tools for the monitoring of insect pests and disease vectors. Among these is the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, a global arbovirus vector. Here we have focused on the autofluorescence characterization of Ae. albopictus adults using a combined imaging and spectrofluorometric approach. Imaging has evidenced that autofluorescence rises from specific body compartments, such as the head appendages, and the abdominal and leg scales. Spectrofluorometry has demonstrated that emission consists of a main band in the 410–600 nm region. The changes in the maximum peak position, between 430 nm and 500 nm, and in the spectral width, dependent on the target structure, indicate the presence, at variable degrees, of different fluorophores, likely resilin, chitin and melanins. The aim of this work has been to provide initial evidence on the so far largely unexplored autofluorescence of Ae. albopictus, to furnish new perspectives for the set-up of species- and sex-specific investigation of biological functions as well as of strategies for in-flight direct detection and surveillance of mosquito vectors. 相似文献
Light-based phenomena in insects have long attracted researchers’ attention. Surface color distribution patterns are commonly used for taxonomical purposes, while optically-active structures from Coleoptera cuticle or Lepidoptera wings have inspired technological applications, such as biosensors and energy accumulation devices. In Diptera, besides optically-based phenomena, biomolecules able to fluoresce can act as markers of bio-metabolic, structural and behavioral features. Resilin or chitinous compounds, with their respective blue or green-to-red autofluorescence (AF), are commonly related to biomechanical and structural properties, helpful to clarify the mechanisms underlying substrate adhesion of ectoparasites’ leg appendages, or the antennal abilities in tuning sound detection. Metarhodopsin, a red fluorescing photoproduct of rhodopsin, allows to investigate visual mechanisms, whereas NAD(P)H and flavins, commonly relatable to energy metabolism, favor the investigation of sperm vitality. Lipofuscins are AF biomarkers of aging, as well as pteridines, which, similarly to kynurenines, are also exploited in metabolic investigations. Beside the knowledge available in Drosophila melanogaster, a widely used model to study also human disorder and disease mechanisms, here we review optically-based studies in other dipteran species, including mosquitoes and fruit flies, discussing future perspectives for targeted studies with various practical applications, including pest and vector control. 相似文献
Discrete random probability measures are a key ingredient of Bayesian nonparametric inference. A sample generates ties with positive probability and a fundamental object of both theoretical and applied interest is the corresponding number of distinct values. The growth rate can be determined from the rate of decay of the small frequencies implying that, when the decreasingly ordered frequencies admit a tractable form, the asymptotics of the number of distinct values can be conveniently assessed. We focus on the geometric stick-breaking process and we investigate the effect of the distribution for the success probability on the asymptotic behavior of the number of distinct values. A whole range of logarithmic behaviors are obtained by appropriately tuning the prior. A two-term expansion is also derived and illustrated in a comparison with a larger family of discrete random probability measures having an additional parameter given by the scale of the negative binomial distribution.
