On Elastic Solids with Micro-Structure.

Abstract. Based on the general framework of evolutionary equations in the sense of [6,8] and referring to well-posedness results in the context of evolutionary problems from mathematical physics we consider two problems from elasticity theory as particular applications. Our structural perspective is illustrated by showing that the theory of elastic solids with micro-structure can be transparently embedded into the abstract solution theory. Binding and Ionophoric Properties of Polyamide Compounds. Lead Selectivity

The extraction and transport properties of macrocyclic dioxa-, dithia- and diazatetralactams are reported along with those of open-chain analogous compounds. The preference of three of them for lead over alkali, alkaline-earth or other heavy metal cations is discussed.

A note on anisotropic,inhomogeneous, poro‐elastic media

A modification of the material law associated with the well‐known Biot system as suggested by Murad and Cushman (Int. J. Eng. Sci. 1996; 34(3):313–338) and first investigated by Showalter (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 2000; 251(1):310–340) is reconsidered, generalized and analysed in the light of a new approach to a comprehensive class of evolutionary problems. The framework allows a uniform approach to problems involving general anisotropic, inhomogeneous, non‐smooth media thus covering, for example, transmission problems in layered materials. Dilational rheology of an air–water interface functionalized by biomolecules: the role of surface diffusion

As an attempt to develop a sensitive device for biomolecule detection, a micromechanical methodology based on the rheological change of an air–water interface is put forward (Berthier and Davoust, CEA/CNRS patent, PCT International Application WO 2003/080209 A3, 2003). Capillary waves induced from the vertical electrodynamic vibration of a brimful cylindrical tank filled with water stand as a good way to identify dilational elasticity and viscosity of an aging interface. Before, we were interested of the fact that complex wave number and the frequency of waves are obtained through an optical technique, which allows us to accurately recognize the whole interface geometry. These two parameters, a modeling based on a dispersion relation (Lucassen-Reynders and Lucassen, Adv Colloid Interface Sci, 2:347, 1969) and the surface mass transport equation, are jointly used to identify the surface diffusivity and the dilational rheology of the interface for a nonsoluble biochemical surfactant. Preliminary results obtained from a water surface functionalized by DNA, thanks to a lipidic monolayer, demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed methodology. The sensitivity of dilational rheology and the surface diffusivity on DNA adsorption on lipids is made evident.This paper was presented at the Annual Meeting of the European Society of Rheology, Grenoble, April 2005.     

Gradient estimates for some diffusion semigroups

 Consider the semigroup $P_t$ of an elliptic diffusion; we describe a simple stochastic method providing gradient estimates on $P_tf$. If $N$ is a manifold endowed with a connection, the method can also be applied to the associated nonlinear semigroup $Q_t$ acting on $N$-valued maps. With a localization technique, we deduce gradient estimates for real harmonic functions or $N$-valued harmonic maps. Moreover, the results are extended to a class of hypoelliptic diffusions. Assessing crystalline lamellae orientation impact on the properties of semi‐crystalline polymer‐clay nanocomposites

Semi‐crystalline polymer‐clay nanocomposite properties are often considered only by their clay dispersion state. The purpose of this work is to highlight texture effects on semi crystalline polymer‐clay properties. Maleic anhydride‐grafted polyethylene nanocomposites with two different processing techniques (Blown Extrusion and Compression) were studied. The processing was shown to induce different crystalline lamellae orientation in the films but with no significant changes in the crystalline lamellae long period, degree of crystallinity, clay particle orientation morphology and dispersion. The impact of these specific textures on the nanocomposites barrier and tensile properties were reported. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 46: 1966–1975, 2008     

On finding the K best cuts in a network

We show that the O(K · n⁴) algorithm of Hamacher (1982) for finding the K best cut-sets fails because it may produce cuts rather than cut-sets. With the convention that two cuts $\text{(X,}\text{X}\text{)}$ and $\text{(Y,}\text{Y}\text{)}$ are different whenever X ≠ Y the K best cut problem can be solved in O(K · n⁴).
