Electron-stimulated reactions at the interfaces of amorphous solid water films driven by long-range energy transfer from the bulk

The electron-stimulated production of D2 from amorphous solid D2O deposited on Pt(111) is investigated as a function of film thickness. The D2 yield has two components that have distinct reaction kinetics. Using isotopically layered films of H2O and D2O demonstrates that the D2 is produced in reactions that occur at both the Pt/amorphous solid water (ASW) interface and the ASW/vacuum interface, but not in the bulk. The energy for the reactions, however, is absorbed in the bulk of the films and electronic excitations diffuse to the interfaces where they drive the reactions.     

Role of magnetism in the formation of a short-range order in an Fe-Ga alloy

The formation of a short-range order in an Fe-Ga bcc alloy has been studied by Monte Carlo simulation with the use of effective interaction potentials calculated within the density functional theory for the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states. It has been found that the pronounced short-range order of the D0₃ type is formed at Ga concentrations close to the boundary of the two-phase region at T < T _c, whereas no short-range order is observed at T < T _c. The results obtained are in agreement with the experimental X-ray diffraction analysis. The relation of the features of the short-range order in the Fe-Ga alloy to the magnetostriction value has been discussed.     

Antioxidant activities and polyphenolic contents of three selected Micromeria species from Croatia

Antioxidant activities of three selected Micromeria species growing in Croatia (M. croatica, M. juliana and M. thymifolia) were evaluated using five different antioxidant assays, in comparison with plant polyphenolic constituents and reference antioxidants. All studied ethanolic extracts exhibited considerable activity to scavenge DPPH and hydroxyl free radicals, reducing power, iron chelating ability and total antioxidant capacity in the order: M. croatica > M. juliana > M. thymifolia. Total polyphenol (9.69-13.66%), phenolic acid (5.26-6.84%), flavonoid (0.01-0.09%) and tannin (3.07-6.48%) contents in dried plant samples were determined spectrophotometrically. A strong positive correlation between antioxidant activities and contents of phenolic acids and tannins was found, indicating their responsibility for effectiveness of tested plants. Our findings established Micromeria species as a rich source of antioxidant polyphenols, especially the endemic M. croatica.     

Normal Families of Zero-free Meromorphic Functions Ⅱ

Let k, m be two positive integers with m ≤ k and let F be a family of zero-free meromorphic functions in a domain D, let h(z) ≡ 0 be a meromorphic function in D with all poles of h has multiplicity at most m. If, for each f ∈ F, f(k)(z) = h(z) has at most k- m distinct roots(ignoring multiplicity) in D, then F is normal in D. This extends the results due to Chang[1], Gu[3], Yang[11]and Deng[1]etc.     

Tracing pore-space heterogeneities in X-type zeolites by diffusion studies

Pore-space homogeneity of zeolite NaX was probed by pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR diffusion studies with n-butane as a guest molecule. At a loading of 0.75 molecules per supercage, a wide spectrum of diffusivities was observed. Guest molecules in the (well-shaped) zeolite crystallites were thus found to experience pore spaces of quite different properties. After loading enhancement to 3 molecules per supercage, however, molecular propagation ideally followed the laws of normal diffusion in homogeneous media. At sufficiently high guest concentrations, sample heterogeneity was thus found to be of no perceptible influence on the guest mobilities anymore.     

‘Whole-molecule Disorder’ Refinement of 4-Tricyanovinyl-N,N-diethylaniline

The molecule of 4-tricyanovinyl-N,N-diethylaniline is disordered about an axis that is close to the axis passing through the 1,4-carbon atoms. The disorder is a 1:1 type of disorder that involves only part of the molecule as the diethylamino substitutent and the three nitrogen atoms of the tricyanovinyl substituent are ordered. The treatment of the nearly ‘whole-molecule disorder’ by employing a small number of restraints is described. Crystal data: C15H14N4, triclinic, P , a = 7.1996(5), b = 7.7232(5), c = 12.4171(8) , α = 99.350(1), β = 94.647(1), γ = 103.312(1)o and V = 657.90(8) 3 at –173 K.
