Multiquark states

The pentaquark state recently discovered has been discussed based on various quark model calculations. Odd parity for the state cannot be ruled out theoretically because the contributions related to nontrivial color structures have not been studied completely. Other multiquark states, especially dibaryons, have been discussed also. A strangeness ?3 NΩ dibaryon has been shown to have a width as small as 12—22 keV and should be detectable in Ω-high-productivity reactions such as at RHIC, COMPAS, and the planned JHF and FAIR projects.     

Novel one-pot total syntheses of deoxyvasicinone, mackinazolinone, isaindigotone, and their derivatives promoted by microwave irradiation

Total syntheses of deoxyvasicinone (1), mackinazolinone (2), and 8-hydroxydeoxyvasicinone (3) via novel microwave-assisted domino reactions, as well as a novel three-component one-pot total synthesis of isaindigotone (5) promoted by microwave irradiation, are reported. The efficient reaction process enabled us to rapidly access related natural product derivatives and to identify a new class of cytotoxic agents.     

Core/shell quantum-dot-photosensitized nano-TiO2 films: fabrication and application to the damage of cells and DNA

Through the use of monodisperse core/shell quantum dots (QDs) as photosensitizers for the first time, a novel strategy for the fabrication of QD-photosensitized nano-TiO2 films was demonstrated. Core/shell QDs were self-assembled on nano-TiO2 films through carboxyls as anchoring groups to metal oxides. Atomic force microscopy and some other experiments showed the fabrication strategy is successful. Reactive oxygen species detection experiments indicated that such films have photosensitization ability. The results of bactericidal and DNA damage experiments demonstrate that such films have excellent photoactivity.     

Experimental quantum cloning with prior partial information

When prior partial information about a state to be cloned is available, it can be cloned with a fidelity higher than that of universal quantum cloning. We experimentally verify this intriguing relationship between the cloning fidelity and the prior information by reporting the first experimental optimal quantum state-dependent cloner, using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. Our experiments may further cast important implications into many quantum information processing protocols.     

Improved air-silica photonic crystal with a triangular airhole arrangement for hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber design

We propose an improved photonic crystal (PC) cladding design for existing air-guiding photonic bandgap (PBG) fibers whose cladding airholes are arranged in a triangular lattice pattern. By increasing the sizes of concentrated silica regions in the cladding PC, we can have a larger degree of freedom in controlling the cladding bandgap regions. We predict that a fiber made from this type of cladding would perform better in terms of the PBG-guiding wavelength range, radiation loss owing to finite cladding size, and the ability to avoid surface mode problems.     

Thermally switchable and discretely tunable comb filter with a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel switchable and discretely tunable comb filter based on a thermally induced linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating. Experimentally we achieved a thermally induced optical bandpass filter that has eight switchable passband peaks with peak separations of 1.6 and 3.2 nm, a very narrow bandwidth (as small as 10 pm) of each peak, a tunable range of 16.5 nm, and a greater than 25 dB rejection ratio. Two spectral peaks separated by only 0.8 nm were also obtained with this comb filter. This filter provides the unique advantages of an all-fiber structure, switchable spectral peaks, independent tuning of the center wavelength and wavelength spacing of the spectral peaks, low polarization sensitivity, simple structure, ease of fabrication, and low cost.     

Reduced occupancy of the deeply bound 0d(5/2) neutron state in 32Ar

The 9Be(32Ar, 31Ar)X reaction, leading to the 5/2+ ground state of a nucleus at the proton drip line, has a cross section of 10.4(13) mb at a beam energy of 65.1 MeV/nucleon. This translates into a spectroscopic factor that is only 24(3)% of that predicted by the many-body shell-model theory. We introduce refinements to the eikonal reaction theory used to extract the spectroscopic factor to clarify that this very strong reduction represents an effect of nuclear structure. We suggest that it reflects correlation effects linked to the high neutron separation energy (22.0 MeV) for this state.     

Sextuplet phenyl embrace in a metal-organic Kagomé lattice

A novel Kagomé lattice that demonstrates the modular nature of metal-organic networks has been prepared and is to our knowledge the first example of a metal-organic coordination polymer that incorporates the sextuplet phenyl embrace as a supramolecular synthon.     

Octanuclear metallocyclic Ni4Fc4 compound: synthesis, crystal structure, and electrochemical sensing for Mg2+

New, neutral octanuclearmacrocyclic compound Ni(4)Fc(4) was achieved via self-assembly from Ni(BF(4))(2) and a ferrocene-containing bis-tridentate ligand. The compound exhibits a channeled structure with cavities inside and senses the Mg(2+) electrochemically in the solid state.
