Noise Reduction in Spur Gear Systems

This article lists some tips for reducing gear case noise. With this aim, a static analysis was carried out in order to describe how stresses resulting from meshing gears affect the acoustic emissions. Different parameters were taken into account, such as the friction, material, and lubrication, in order to validate ideas from the literature and to make several comparisons. Furthermore, a coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian (CEL) analysis was performed, which was an innovative way of evaluating the sound pressure level of the aforementioned gears. Different parameters were considered again, such as the friction, lubrication, material, and rotational speed, in order to make different research comparisons. The analytical results agreed with those in the literature, both for the static analysis and CEL analysis—for example, it was shown that changing the material from steel to ductile iron improved the gear noise, while increasing the rotational speed or the friction increased the acoustic emissions. Regarding the CEL analysis, air was considered a perfect gas, but its viscosity or another state equation could have also been taken into account. Therefore, the above allowed us to state that research into these scientific fields will bring about reliable results.     

Determination of cobalt in sewage sludge using ultrasonic slurry sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

Cobalt in sludge of domestic and industrial origin, with high iron contents (> 17 g/kg), was determined by slurry sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS). Slurries prepared by ultrasonic stirring were adequately diluted to cover the variation in cobalt content in the sludge samples. The diluent was 5% HNO3. Standard atomisation conditions for cobalt determination were used and no matrix modifier was applied. Slurry sampling GF-AAS results in the sludge were verified by analysing totally digested samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and by GF-AAS. The procedure was validated by analysing the certified reference material BCR 146 R, a sewage sludge of industrial origin. Recoveries for cobalt in the spiked slurried sludge samples ranged from 92 to 96%, with a relative standard deviation of 10%. Recoveries in the certified sludge using slurry sampling GF-AAS technique were about 103% for a cobalt content of 7.39 mg/kg.     

Study on volatile components in salami by reverse carrier gas headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Salami are a typical seasoned sausage of Italy; a number of types are produced, according to local traditional recipes. As industrial production has taken place, a number of problems rise in obtaining products similar to the traditional ones. The use of selected microbial starters is permitted by Italian law for some years and at present, microbiological research is engaged in selecting starters similar to the ones isolated from traditional products, with the aim of obtaining organoleptic characteristics close to the ones of traditional recipes. A study was carried out concerning the characterisation of volatile components of salami by headspace capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. As during the sampling step, analytes could reach the analytical column, the carrier gas rate was back flushed in the latter, while a pre column was used as cold trap. Then GC-MS analysis follows. By these techniques, we were able to highlight typical profiles of different salami, as well as monitoring the ripening of a traditional and a starter added salami. Main peaks are of fermentative origin, while also peaks from spices were detected. Ethyl propionate was used as internal standard to be able to normalise the peaks amounts.

General Solution for Hamiltonians with Extended Cubic and Quartic Potentials

In terms of hyperelliptic functions, we integrate a two-particle Hamiltonian with quartic potential and additional linear and nonpolynomial terms in the Liouville integrable cases 1:6:1 and 1:6:8.

Summability and estimates for polynomials and multilinear mappings

In this paper we extend and generalize several known estimates for homogeneous polynomials and multilinear mappings on Banach spaces. Applying the theory of absolutely summing nonlinear mappings, we prove that estimates which are known for mappings on ?_p spaces in fact hold true for mappings on arbitrary Banach spaces.
