Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is particularly well adapted to the evaluation of aortic distensibility. The calculation of this parameter, based on the change in vessel cross-sectional area per unit change in blood pressure, requires precise delineation of the aortic wall on a series of cine-MR images. Firstly, the study consisted in validating a new automatic method to assess aortic elasticity. Secondly, aortic distensibility was studied for the ascending and descending thoracic aortas in 26 healthy subjects. Two homogeneous groups were available to evaluate the influence of sex and age (with an age limit value of 35 years). The automatic postprocessing method proved to be robust and reliable enough to automatically determine aortic distensibility, even on artefacted images. In the 26 healthy volunteers, a marked decrease in distensibility appears with age, although this decrease is only significant for the ascending aorta (8.97±2.69 10−3 mmHg−1 vs. 5.97±2.02 10−3 mmHg−1). Women have a higher aortic distensibility than men but only significantly at the level of the descending aorta (7.20±1.61 10−3 mmHg−1 vs. 5.05±2.40 10−3 mmHg−1). Through our automatic contouring method, the aortic distensibility from routine cine-MRI has been studied on a healthy subject population providing reference values of aortic stiffness. The aortic distensibility calculation shows that age and sex are causes of aortic stiffness variations in healthy subjects.  相似文献

Demonstrations of the possibility of obtaining functional information from the spinal cord in humans using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have been growing in number and sophistication, but the technique and the results that it provides are still perceived by the scientific community with a greater degree of scepticism than fMRI investigations of brain function. Here we review the literature on spinal fMRI in humans during voluntary movements and somatosensory stimulation. Particular attention is given to study design, acquisition and statistical analysis of the images, and to the agreement between the obtained results and existing knowledge regarding spinal cord anatomy and physiology.  相似文献

The dynamic effects of low-frequency biasing on spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) were studied in human subjects under various signal conditions. Results showed a combined suppression and modulation of the SOAE amplitudes at high bias tone levels. Ear-canal acoustic spectra demonstrated a reduction in SOAE amplitude and growths of sidebands while increasing the bias tone level. These effects varied depending on the relative strength of the bias tone to a particular SOAE. The SOAE magnitudes were suppressed when the cochlear partition was biased in both directions. This quasi-static modulation pattern showed a shape consistent with the first derivative of a sigmoid-shaped nonlinear function. In the time domain, the SOAE amplitudes were modulated with the instantaneous phase of the bias tone. For each biasing cycle, the SOAE envelope showed two peaks each corresponded to a zero crossing of the bias tone. The temporal modulation patterns varied systematically with the level and frequency of the bias tone. These dynamic behaviors of the SOAEs are consistent with the shifting of the operating point along the nonlinear transducer function of the cochlea. The results suggest that the nonlinearity in cochlear hair cell transduction may be involved in the generation of SOAEs.  相似文献

Crystalline carbon nitride nanopowders and nanorods have been successfully synthesized at room temperature and pressure using the novel technique of pulsed laser ablation of a graphite target in liquid ammonia solution. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to systematically study the morphology, nanostructure and chemical bonding. The experimental composition and structure of the nanoparticles are consistent with the theoretical calculations for α-C3N4. After 2 h ablation the particles had a size distribution ∼8–12 nm, whereas after 5 h ablation the particles had grown into nanorod-like structures with a crystalline C3N4 tip. A formation mechanism for these nanorods is proposed whereby nanoparticles are first synthesized via rapid formation of an embryonic particle, followed by a slow growth, eventually leading to a one-dimensional nanorod structure.  相似文献

Organic pollutants in liquid exposed to acoustic waves behave differently according to their physical and chemical properties. Laboratory batch experiments of sonication for the degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) and ethylene dibromide (EDB) were carried out in groundwater at 20 kHz, and 12.5 and 35 W/cm(2). A theoretical model for the batch sonication system was derived to examine the mass transfer dependency of the ultrasonic degradation. Experimental results were supported with model predictions suggesting that both liquid phase diffusion coefficient and Henry's law constant are important parameters for the sonolytic degradation of the halogenated organic compounds in groundwater. When compared with the effect of the diffusion coefficient, Henry's constant exerts a greater influence on sonolytic degradation. When Henry's constant exceeds a value of 1 (volume/volume ratio), however, it no longer has much influence on the degradation process. The results also suggest that degradation is enhanced with an increase in ultrasonic power probably due to a greater bubble residence time and the formation of larger bubble at high-energy intensities.  相似文献

Listeners asked to detect tones masked by noise hear frequent signals but miss infrequent probes, suggesting that they attend to spectral regions where they expect the signals to occur. The narrow detection pattern centered on the frequent target approximates that obtained in notched noise, indicating that attention is focused on the auditory filter. We measured attention bands in young and elderly listeners (n=5, 4; 20-25 and 62-82 years of age) for targets (800 or 1200 Hz) and infrequent probe signals (target +/-25-100 Hz) masked in wideband noise. We anticipated that their width would increase with age, as has been reported for auditory filters. A yes-no single-interval procedure provided detection probabilities and detection response speeds. Both measures showed near-linear declines with decreasing signal level, and graded decay functions as probe frequency deviated from the target frequency. Probes deviating from the target by 25 to 50 Hz were equivalent to a 2-dB reduction in signal level for both measures. The equivalent rectangular bandwidth (ERB) for detection approximated 11% of the signal frequency for each age group. Confidence intervals (95%) showed that the elderly ERB could be at most only about 20% larger than that of younger listeners.  相似文献

We present a novel method for obtaining high resolution NMR spectra in the presence of grossly inhomogeneous magnetic fields, such as those encountered in one-sided access NMR. Our method combines the well-known principle of reference deconvolution with NMR imaging in order to resolve spectral features with frequency resolution orders of magnitude smaller than the prevailing line-broadening due to field inhomogeneity. We demonstrate that, in cases of inhomogeneous field line-broadening more than an order of magnitude larger than the spectral features to be resolved, rather than performing reference deconvolution on the sample as a whole, it is more favourable in terms of SNR to divide the target region of a sample into smaller sub-regions, by means of chemical shift imaging, and then to perform reference deconvolution on the individual sub-region spectra, finally summing the results In this way, significant resolution enhancements can be obtained in the presence of severe magnetic field inhomogeneity without an unacceptable loss in SNR.  相似文献

Off-resonance or spillover irradiation and incomplete saturation can introduce significant errors in the estimates of chemical rate constants measured by saturation-transfer magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Existing methods of correction are effective only over a limited parameter range. Here, a general approach of numerically solving the Bloch-McConnell equations to calculate exchange rates, relaxation times and concentrations for the saturation-transfer experiment is investigated, but found to require more measurements and higher signal-to-noise ratios than in vivo studies can practically afford. As an alternative, correction formulae for the reaction rate are provided which account for the expected parameter ranges and limited measurements available in vivo. The correction term is a quadratic function of experimental measurements. In computer simulations, the new formulae showed negligible bias and reduced the maximum error in the rate constants by about 3-fold compared to traditional formulae, and the error scatter by about 4-fold, over a wide range of parameters for conventional saturation transfer employing progressive saturation, and for the four-angle saturation-transfer method applied to the creatine kinase (CK) reaction in the human heart at 1.5 T. In normal in vivo spectra affected by spillover, the correction increases the mean calculated forward CK reaction rate by 6-16% over traditional and prior correction formulae.  相似文献
