Low temperature fluorination of sulphur compounds with elemental fluorine

Low temperature fluorination technique is adopted for fluorination of the following sulphur compounds in freon-11 medium (1) Sulphur dioxide (2) Thionyl chloride (3) Sulphuryl chloride (4) Tetrasulphur tetra nitride and (5) Sulphur bromide. All the compounds undergo oxidative fluorination to give rise to sulphur-fluorine compounds except sulphuryl chloride which resists fluorination. Sulphuryl chloride thus behaves as a good solvent medium for fluorination of other reactive compounds like elemental sulphur. Details of the experimental procedures adopted and the identification of the products will be presented.     

Synthesis, spectra and biomimetic properties of copper(II)-copper(II) and copper(II)-zinc(II) binuclear complexes with CuN5 chromophores

X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) and UV-vis spectra of a homobinuclear [(Bipy)2Cu-E-Im-Cu(Bipy)2](BF4)3 and a heterobinuclear [(Bipy)2Cu-E-Im-Zn(Bipy)2](BF4)3 complexes, E-Im=2-ethylimidazolate ion have been described as possible models for superoxide dismutase (SOD). Magnetic moment and ESR spectral measurements of the homobinuclear complex have shown an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. From pH-dependent ESR and UV-vis spectral measurements studies, these complexes have been found to be stable over 8.5-10.5 pH range. These complexes catalyze the dismutation of superoxide (O2-) at biological pH. All the observations indicate that these complexes act as good possible models for superoxide dismutase.     

Dispersion interaction between helium pair from hydrodynamic analogy to quantum mechanics

Frequency-dependent multipole polarizabilities of the He sequence have been calculated from a hydrodynamic model of quantum mechanics and using an independent-particle model Hamiltonian. Our present scheme is parallel to the uncoupled Hartree–Fock approximation so our values of polarizabilities, multipole transition energies and dispersion force coefficients between the He? He pair are comparable with earlier works using the uncoupled Hartree–Fock approximation.     

Synergistic extraction and spectrophotometric determination of plutonium(VI)

A rapid method for the synergistic extraction and spectrophotometric determination of plutonium(VI) in milligram amounts using a mixture of thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) in benzene has been developed. Quantitative extraction is obtained from aqueous solutions of pH=2 affording separation from many commonly occurring impurities, viz., thorium, fission products and cladding materials. The precision and accuracy of the method has been found to be∼1%. The study of the solid product isolated from the extraction system indicates the stoichiometry of the extracted species as PuO₂(TTA)₂ TBP.     

Star-shaped azo-based dipolar chromophores: design, synthesis, matrix compatibility, and electro-optic activity

Three new azo-benzene-based push-pull chromophores with dendritic architecture were synthesized as active materials for electro-optic applications. These chromophores were synthesized in six or seven synthetic steps with an overall yield of around 80% per step and high purity. UV-vis spectroscopy showed significant influence of the transient dipole moment on the observed r(33) values. The chromophores were stable to photochemical oxidation in ambient light and air. The electrical poling conditions were optimized for each chromophore as the T(g) of the composite material varied significantly. The highest EO coefficient achieved was 22-25 pm/V at 1550 nm wavelength. STEM analysis of the blends enabled the correlation of the activity of these large chromophores with the blend morphology. An amorphous polycarbonate host effectively disperses the chromophores in 2-20 nm aggregates in the active materials. However, macrophase separation into 200-500 nm aggregates was observed in a methacrylate host matrix.     

Preparation and reactions of mono-reissert compounds and analogs at the 3,4-position of quinazoline

Quinazoline, acid chlorides, and trimethylsilyl cyanide have been converted to mono-Reissert compounds at the 3,4-position of the quinazoline system. Various reactions of these quinazoline Reissert compounds are reported.     

Pressure dependence of the compressibility of alkali halides

The parameterC ₁=[(1/K _T )/P] _T , which describes the pressure variation of the compressibility, has been examined correlating the thermodynamical and interatomic potential approaches employing fewer approximations than has been usual heretofore. General expressions have been derived forC ₁ by including the thermal correction terms, which have generally been ignored in previous studies concerning thermal properties of ionic crystals. The parameterC ₁ has also been related to the Grüneisen parameter, , using a relation given earlier. The applicability of the derived equations is investigated and discussed for alkali halides employing few realistic potential forms. A good general accord is found with the available experimental data, which exhibits an essential improvement over other theoretical determinations.
