Experiments with longitudinally polarized electrons in a storage ring using a siberian snake

We report on first measurements with polarized electrons stored in a medium-energy ring and with a polarized internal target. Polarized electrons were injected at 442 MeV (653 MeV), and a partial (full) Siberian snake was employed to preserve the polarization. Longitudinal polarization at the interaction point and polarization lifetime of the stored electrons were determined with laser backscattering. Spin observables were measured for electrodisintegration of polarized 3He, with simultaneous detection of scattered electrons, protons, neutrons, deuterons, and 3He nuclei, over a large phase space.     

Non-linearity of multibody dynamic equations with respect to Lagrange multipliers: application to railway dynamics

In this paper, the dynamics of multibody systems with closed kinematical chains of bodies is considered. The main focus is set on non-linearity of the multibody equations with respect to the Lagrange multipliers. When closed chains are considered, loop cutting procedure is a solution to express the constraint equations associated with the loops. Dynamic equations of the multibody tree-like structure are thus completed with the constraint forces via the Lagrange multipliers. In the considered case of railway vehicles, constraints arise from the contact between the rigid wheels and the rails. Corresponding contact forces applied to the wheels appears via the Lagrange multipliers λ and the tangent creep forces as well. Resulting differential-algebraic equations can be transformed into an ODE system and then time-integrated using the coordinate partitioning method [3], when the system is linear with respect to λ. This paper presents an algorithm allowing us to solve this system in case of nonlinearities with respect to λ, which is typical of wheel/rail contact force models. (© 2009 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Chiral induction effects in ruthenium(II) amino alcohol catalysed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones: an experimental and theoretical approach

The enantioselective outcome of transfer hydrogenation reactions that are catalysed by ruthenium(II) amino alcohol complexes was studied by means of a systematically varied series of ligands. It was found that both the substituent at the 1-position in the 2-amino-1-alcohol ligand and the substituent at the amine functionality influence the enantioselectivity of the reaction to a large extent: enantioselectivities (ee values) of up to 95% were obtained for the reduction of acetophenone. The catalytic cycle of ruthenium(II) amino alcohol catalysed transfer hydrogenation was examined at the density functional theory level. The formation of a hydrogen bond between the carbonyl functionality of the substrate and the amine proton of the ligand, as well as the formation of an intramolecular H...H bond and a planar H-Ru-N-H moiety are crucially important for the reaction mechanism. The enantioselective outcome of the reaction can be illustrated with the aid of molecular modelling by the visualisation of the steric interactions between the ketone and the ligand backbone in the ruthenium(II) catalysts.

Anomalies of dielectric properties of cs2hgci4 crystals in the vicinity of phase transitions

A short review of the published experimental data on various physical properties and some new results of the measurement of dielectric and electromechanical properties of Cs₂HgCI₄ crystals in a wide temperature range are presented. The crystal is shown to reveal anomalies at seven temperatures associated with structural phase transitions and hence to have eight phases. In two temperature regions there exists a small spontaneous polarization and the anomalous dielectric permittivity is a nonlinear function of the electric biasing field. Within the phase followed by the first polar phase on cooling the crystal, the effects of thermal, electrical and mechanical memory, specific for incommensurate phases, are observable.     

Element yields in 252Cf spontaneous fission determined from measured X-ray multiplicities

The prompt element yields for ²⁵²Cf spontaneous fission were obtained from measurements of coincident multiple K X-rays. A model for X-ray emission was fitted to the rates at which various X-ray multiplicities were detected. An odd-even effect of (5 ± 4)% in the element yields was observed.     

Microcomputer programming in basic for the evaluation of capillary gas chromatography in the analysis of pesticide residues. I. MATRIXCOMP--a program that facilitates the recognition of interfering peaks from the biological matrix

Chromatograms of pesticide residues in food include peaks produced by pesticides and matrix compounds. Pesticide peaks are recognized by means of relative retention times and response factors; two detectors are used and internal standard methods are applied. Chromatograms of reference samples for all types of food are stored as raw data in a reduced format, together with tables of all chromatographic data for the matrix compounds. MATRIXCOMP provides the analyst with the chromatograms of the actual sample and the reference in parallel on a visual display screen for visual comparison. Simultaneously, the relevant chromatographic data for the sample, the reference and the calibration tables are displayed on a second screen page in a condensed form.
