Dynamics of phase separation in mesomorphic mixtures

We describe the dynamics of phase separation and transition processes, in binary mesomorphic mixtures with the help of a system of two coupled partial derivative equations. We emphasize, both analytically and numerically, that, depending on the regions of the phase diagram, the dynamical behaviour may result either from a two step process (first the phase transition, then the phase separation) or from a process showing salient features of the Cahn-Hilliard spinodal decomposition (bicontinuous periodic networks in the transient stages). The dynamics of evolution of the domain patterns are illustrated with the help of numerical simulations in which homeotropic and planar anchorages are visualized.     

Light transmission by polymer-dispersed liquid crystals

Light transmission of nematic liquid crystals dispersed in a polymeric matrix is investigated. The paper gives a theoretical analysis of light transmission by the liquid crystal-polymer and liquid crystaldye-polymer systems based on determination of the total cross section of extinction. The mathematical model is considered in the anomalous diffraction approximation. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with experimental data obtained for films based on cyanodiphenyl dispersed into a polyvinyl acetate matrix.Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences. Micron-image transfer system with brightness amplifier in gold-vapor laser

A gas-discharge gold-vapor laser on self-terminating transitions with operating wavelength λ=312.2 nm has been used to develop a highly efficient system for image transfer. An optical scheme and all its parameters have been chosen optimal for image quality. It has been found both theoretically and experimentally that the best results on micron-structure image transfer are obtained with 2–5-times image reduction. Various types of masks have been used. A 1-µm structure has been resolved due to the choice of optimal exposure time of 10 ms under a period of pulse repetition (0.6 – 0.8) ms; in this case, the minimal fringe dimension was ≈2 µm with an image dimension of 2 mm for a laser tube 1.8 cm in diameter.     

Ion Beam Driven Ion Cyclotron Double Layers

We present here a self consistent theory of small amplitude double layers associated with electrostatic ion cyclotron waves in a plasma containing hot electrons, cold ions and traversed by an ion beam. It has been shown that compressive type of double layers solution exists when θ_b (beam temperature) < α_b (beam concentration) < 1.     

Application of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry for the determination of some inorganic pollutants in gravitation dust sediments

Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry with radionuclide excitation has been applied to determine As, Cu, Fe, Pb, Rb, Sr, Ti, Zn and Zr in inorganic pollutants of gravitation dust sediments. Application of this technique required a complete optimization including sampling and their preparation for analysis and evaluation. This method has been finally used to analyze series of samples of dust sediments.     

A mathematical model of a class of problems for the transport of a mixture in air

An analytic solution of a class of boundary-value problems of mathematical physics describing the transport of a mixture in the atmosphere is considered. To solve these problems we apply the substitution method and the Fourier method. The solution of a boundary problem describing the process of contamination of the atmosphere by various substances is presented in the form of a series. Absorptive corrections to structure functions at small-x

The role of corrections due to the interactions between different branches of parton (gluon) cascades is studied. It is shown that at HERA energies these interactions increase the absorptive (two-Pomeron cut) contributions by about 60 to 80% compared with the Gribov-Levin-Ryskin equation.This work was supported, in part, by a Soros Foundation Grant awarded by the American Physical Society
