Composting and biodegradation of thermally processed feather keratin polymer

Proteins obtained from agricultural sources represent a unique feedstock from which to prepare thermally processable polymers. In this study, thermally processed feather keratin films were composted with three-month-old compost inoculum in self-heating laboratory composters for 30 days and temperature and carbon dioxide development monitored. About 24% of the available carbon in the feather keratin polymer (FKP) was metabolized in this time and this may not be high enough for some applications. Degradation of the feather keratin polymers was observed within 10 days with concurrent molecular weight reduction measured using FT-IR. Visual inspection of the polymers also showed destruction of the films. A change in crystallinity was observed in DSC analysis and some degradation processes could be inferred from this as well.     

High mobility of dithiophene-tetrathiafulvalene single-crystal organic field effect transistors

Single-crystal field effect transistors of the organic semiconductor dithiophene-tetrathiafulvalene (DT-TTF) were prepared by drop casting. Long, thin crystals connected two microfabricated gold electrodes, and a silicon substrate was used as a back gate. The highest hole mobility observed was 1.4 cm2/Vs, which is the highest reported for an organic semiconductor not based on pentacene. A high ON/OFF ratio of at least 7 x 105 was obtained for this device.     

Thermal analysis of lanthanide polyphosphates

Summary A study of thermal analysis of some lanthanide polyphosphates has been reported. The DTA curves of Ce, Pr and Sm polyphosphates were of similar nature. They exhibited a sharp exothermic peak indicating crystallization temperature (T _c) around 520 °C. However, no peak indicatingT _m was observed upto 800 °C. TG curves of Ce, La, Pr, Sm, Y polyphosphates indicated weight loss occurring in three stages. The integral procedural decomposition thermal analysis (ipdt) indicated that these materials had refractory nature.With 4 figures and 2 tables     

Crystallization kinetics of chalcogenide glass Se0.8 Te0.2

The crystallization kinetics of the chalcogenide glass Se_0.8Te_0.2 was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The variation in partial area (X) with temperature (T) revealed that the transition from the amorphous to the crystalline phase occurs in two dimensions.Activation energies were determined for both the glass transition (E _t) and the crystallization (E _c).E _t was calculated from the variation inT _g with the heating rate (a).E _c was determined by three different methods: (i) variation inX withT, (ii) variation inT _p witha, and (iii) variation inT _c witha.E _t andE _c have values of 161.01±2.75 and 84.75 ±8.21 kJ/mol, respectively.

Zusammenfassung Mittels DSC wurde die Kristallisierungskinetik des Chalkogenidglases Se_0.8Te_0.2 untersucht. Eine Änderung partieller Gebiete (X) mit der Temperatur (T) zeigte, daß der Übergang von der amorphen zur kristallinen Phase zweidimensional verläuft.Es wurde die Aktivierungsenergie sowohl für den Glasübergang (E _t) als auch für die Kristallisierung (E _c) bestimmt.E _t wurde mittels der Abhängigkeit vonT _g von der Aufheizgeschwindigkeit (a) ermittelt.E _c wurde auf drei verschiedene Wege bestimmt: (i) Änderung vonX in Abhängigkeit vonT, (ii) Änderung vonT _p in Abhängigkeit vona und (iii) Änderung vonT _c in Abhängigkeit vona. Die Werte vonE _t undE _c betragen 161.01±2.75 bzw. 84.75±8.21 kJ/mol.

The mass spectra of 2-alkyl N-methyl pyrrolidines

The mass spectra of a series of 2-alkyl N-methyl pyrrolidines have been examined and fragments which may be pyrrole type structures are apparent. These ions are most prominent in the spectra of the long chain alkyl derivatives.     

Biomimetic reduction of nimesulide with NaBH4 catalyzed by metalloporphyrins

The biomimetic reduction of anti-inflammatory drug, nimesulide (1) with sodium borohydride catalyzed by 5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrinatoiron(III) chlorides [TAPFe(III)Cl] has been studied in organic solvents under anaerobic and aerobic conditions.     

Thermosensitive mucoadhesive gel formulation loaded with 5-Fu: cyclodextrin complex for HPV-induced cervical cancer

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infections are the major cause of cervical cancers. To achieve a better therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance in the treatment for HPV-induced cervical cancers, anticancer agent 5-fluorouracil has been formulated in a vaginal gel using the thermosensitive polymer Pluronic^® F127 together with alternative mucoadhesive polymers e.g., hyaluronic acid, Carbopol 934 and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. To increase its aqueous solubility and to achieve the complete release of 5-FU from the gel, the drug was incorporated as its inclusion complex with 1:1 molar ratio with either β-cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin. Following the characterization of drug:CD complexes, thermosensitive gel formulations containing different mucoadhesive polymers and the drug in free or complexed form were characterized in vitro by determining the gelation temperature and the rheological behavior of different formulations along with the in vitro release profiles of these formulations in pH 5.5 citrate buffer. It was observed that complexation with cyclodextrin accelerated the release of 5-FU with the exception of formulation containing Carbopol 934 as mucoadhesive polymer. As far as rheological properties are concerned, favorable thermosensitive in situ gelling properties were obtained with formulations containing HPMC as mucoadhesive polymer. Complete release of 5-FU from gels were obtained with both complexes of β-CD and HP-β-CD and cytotoxicity studies against HeLa human cervical carcinoma cells demonstrated that 1% 5-FU:CD complexes were equally effective as 1% free 5-FU indicating better therapeutic efficacy with lower dose.     

Comparative Studies of Cathodically-Promoted and Base-Catalyzed Michael Addition Reactions of Levoglucosenone

Regioselective Michael addition of nitro and heterocyclic compounds to levoglucosenone, 1, is effectively catalyzed by amines and also by cathodic electrolysis. In comparison to the base-catalyzed reaction, it was found that under electrochemical conditions the reaction proceeds under milder conditions and with higher yields. Cathodically-initiated Michael addition of thiols to levoglucosenone using small currents produces the previously unknown threo addition product in several instances. The normal erythro isomer, identified as the kinetic product, tends to be formed when large currents are used. In contrast, slow, low current electrolyses promote equilibration of the two forms so that erythro can be converted to threo by the retro reaction and readdition. Addition of 2-naphthalenethiol to (R)-(+)-apoverbenone is also reported.
