Relativistic electron correlation, quantum electrodynamics, and the lifetime of the 1s(2)2s(2)2p2p0(3/2) level in boronlike argon

The lifetime of the Ar13+ 1s(2)2s(2)2p2p0(3/2) metastable level was determined at the Heidelberg Electron Beam Ion Trap to be 9.573(4)(5). The accuracy level of one per thousand makes this measurement sensitive to quantum electrodynamic effects like the electron anomalous magnetic moment (EAMM) and to relativistic electron-electron correlation effects like the frequency-dependent Breit interaction. Theoretical predictions, adjusted for the EAMM, cluster about a lifetime that is approximately shorter than our experimental result.     

Low frequency vibrations of 1,3-butadiene, 1,3-butadiene-d4, and 1,3-butadiene-d6

The absorption bands in the far infrared due to the torsional and in-plane skeletal bending vibrations have been examined in detail together with some mid-infrared bands. Torsional energy level spacings up to v₁₃ = 5 for butadiene and up to v₁₃ = 4 and 3, respectively, for the d₄- and d₆-compounds have been measured accurately, and the data used to investigate the nature of the potential function for rotation about the CC single bond. A Coriolis interaction between the torsion and the in-plane bending mode ν₂₄ has been analyzed in detail.     

Statistical properties of cosmic-ray scintillations at 250 GV

Summary We present the results of an amplitude domain analysis of cosmic-ray fluctuations in the interplanetary field at average rigidities of 250 GV. The experimental histograms are compared with the theoretical probability densities obtained by assuming linear behaviour and yield interesting results on extremal events. The approximate agreement is interpreted not as a proof that high-rigidity scintillations are indeed linear, but as possible evidence of noise contamination in this kind of analysis.

Gli istogrammi sperimentali sono compatibili con un comportamento lineare e permettono di ottenere interessanti indicazioni sugli eventi estremi. L'accordo è interpretato non come una prova che le scintillazioni ad alta rigidità sono in effetti lineari, ma piuttosto come possibile evidenza di contaminazione da background in questo tipo di analisi.

Резюме Мы приводим результаты анализа амплитудной области флуктуаций космических лучей в межпланетном поле при средних жесткостях 250 GV. Экспериментальные гистограммы согласуются с теоретическими предсказаниями, полученными в предположении линейного поведения и дают интересные результаты для экстремальных событий. Полученное согласие интерпретируется не как доказательство того, что сцинтилляции при высокой жесткости действительно являются линейными, а как возможное подтверждение наличия шумового загрязнения в этом типе анализа.

A relativistic oscillator model is applied to lepton-nucleon reactions. It agrees quantitatively with data on hadron energy distribution, multiplicity, and $\text{π}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{π}{}^{\mathrm{?}}$ ratios.     

Practical scheme for quantum computation with any two-qubit entangling gate

Which gates are universal for quantum computation? Although it is well known that certain gates on two-level quantum systems (qubits), such as the controlled-not, are universal when assisted by arbitrary one-qubit gates, it has only recently become clear precisely what class of two-qubit gates is universal in this sense. We present an elementary proof that any entangling two-qubit gate is universal for quantum computation, when assisted by one-qubit gates. A proof of this result for systems of arbitrary finite dimension has been provided by Brylinski and Brylinski; however, their proof relies on a long argument using advanced mathematics. In contrast, our proof provides a simple constructive procedure which is close to optimal and experimentally practical.     

Controlled growth of triblock polyelectrolyte brushes

We have achieved a significant breakthrough in the synthesis of polyelectrolyte brushes of controlled thickness and density, which has been demonstrated by the synthesis of triblock copolymer brushes composed of cationic, neutral, and anionic segments.     

Stereospecific Nickel‐Catalyzed Cross‐Coupling Reactions of Alkyl Grignard Reagents and Identification of Selective Anti‐Breast‐Cancer Agents

Alkyl Grignard reagents that contain β‐hydrogen atoms were used in a stereospecific nickel‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reaction to form C(sp³)? C(sp³) bonds. Aryl Grignard reagents were also utilized to synthesize 1,1‐diarylalkanes. Several compounds synthesized by this method exhibited selective inhibition of proliferation of MCF‐7 breast cancer cells.
