Microemulsion-based synthesis of titanium phosphate nanotubes via amine extraction system

The first titanium phosphate nanotubes with alternating interlayer spacings have been successfully prepared and characterized. The synthesis is accomplished in a reverse microemulsion formed in an amine extraction system. TEM data from samples made after different times of reaction suggest a scrolling-formation mechanism.     

Grid points of Gauss-Legendre quadrature as exponent parameters of basis functions of atomic hartree-fock wavefunctions

Use of the grid points of the Gauss-Legendre numerical quadrature is examined as the exponent parameters of the basis functions of atomic Hartree-Fock wavefunctions. Calculations on He, Be, and Ne have been performed and reasonably accurate wavefunctions are obtained using 20 grid points or basis functions per symmetry species without any optimization of non-linear parameters.     

Heck coupling reaction of iodobenzene and styrene using supercritical water in the absence of a catalyst

Heck coupling reaction of iodobenzene and styrene proceeds rapidly and selectively in supercritical water even without any catalyst in the presence of base. Both the choice of base and the reaction conditions had a significant effect on the conversion and the selectivity of the coupling products. The addition of a relatively mild base such as potassium acetate facilitated the cross-coupling reaction, while the hydrolysis of phenyl halide was favored in the presence of a strong base. The conversion and the yields of coupling products increased with increasing temperature, reaching a maximum at 650 K near the critical temperature of water, and then decreased as the temperature was further increased. Water density had a significant influence on the reaction rate, showing nearly 30% augmentation with a slight increase in density from 0.45 to 0.56 g cm(-3), but had less effect on the product selectivity. Two possibilities of the role of water responsible for the noncatalytic Heck coupling reaction in supercritical water, that is, ion and water-catalyzed mechanisms have been considered.     

Canceling branch points and cusps on projections of knotted surfaces in -space

For a knotted surface in -space, its generic projection into -space has branch points as its singularities, and its successive projection into -space has fold points and cusps as its singularities. In this paper, we show that for non-orientable knotted surfaces, the numbers of branch points and cusps can be minimized by isotopy.

     

Three-dimensional polarimetric integral imaging

A three-dimensional (3D) polarimetric image sensing and display technique based on integral imaging is proposed. Three-dimensional polarization distribution of reflected light from a 3D object can be measured as elemental image arrays by a rotating linear polarizer. After the measurement of the polarization of the 3D object, the 3D polarimetric object can be reconstructed optically by displaying the polarization-selected elemental images in spatial light modulators with two quarter-wave plates. Experimental demonstration of 3D polarimetric imaging of a 3D object attached to two orthogonal linear polarizers is presented. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on 3D polarimetric sensing imaging and 3D optical reconstruction by integral imaging.     

Photorefractive effect in the relaxor ferroelectric material 0.91Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.09PbTiO3

The photorefractive effect in a nominally undoped 0.91Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.09PbTiO3 single crystal is measured. We report what is, to our knowledge, the first observation of the photorefractive effect in Pb-based relaxor ferroelectric crystals. The crystal is grown by the flux solution method. Then it is cut into a 2 mm x 4 mm x 8 mm piece and electrically poled along the [111] direction. The coupling constant of the two-wave mixing is 17 cm(-1), and the normalized time constant under 1-W/cm(2) illumination is 12 s at a wave-length of 476 nm. The effective trap density is calculated as 5 x 10(16) cm(-3) from the Debye screening length under the assumption of Kukhtarev's band-transport model. The dominant carrier is identified to be holes from the direction of two-wave mixing energy transfer.     

Iodine atom transfer [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction with electron-rich alkenes using N-tosyliodoaziridine derivatives as novel azahomoallyl radical precursors

Treatment of N-tosyliodoaziridine derivatives with Et(3)B efficiently produces various azahomoallyl radical (2-akenylamidyl radical) species which give oxygen-functionalized pyrrolidine derivatives through iodine atom transfer [3 + 2] cycloaddition with electron-rich alkenes such as enol ethers and ketene acetal. The present cycloaddition reaction proceeds regioselectively via C-N bond cleavage of an aziridinylalkyl radical intermediate and addition of the resulting azahomoallyl radicals to the terminal carbon of an alkene. The reaction of alkenes with the cyclohexenylamidyl radical generated from an optically active bicyclic iodoaziridine [(1S,2S,6S)-2-iodo-7-(p-toluenesulfonyl)-7-azabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane, 94% ee] also proceeds to give optically active octahydroindole derivatives (84-93% ee).
