Evaluation of dissociation constants of ammonium ion in aqueous lithium perchlorate and lithium chloride-sodium chloride mixed solutions

The Pitzer approach has been applied to the evaluation of dissociation constants of ammonium ion in lithium perchlorate and lithium chloride-sodium chloride mixed solutions at 25°C. The calculated values showed good agreement with the observed values, provided all the higher-order interaction terms ('s and 's) concerned were introduced. The unknown (NH₄LiClO₄) value was determined from the isopiestic measurements of NH₄ClO₄–LiClO₄ mixed solutions. Parameters in the Pitzer formalism for ammonia-ion interactions involved in LiCl and NaCl media were determined by use of the activity coefficients of ammonia measured in LiCl–NaCl mixed solutions by a transpiration method.     

Effect of 1,10-phenanthroline on the extraction and separation of lithium(I), sodium(I) and potassium(I) with thenoyltrifluoroacetone

The extraction of Li⁺ with thenoyltrifluoroacetone (Htta) in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) has been studied in various organic solvents. The remarkable enhancement of the extraction of Li⁺, that is a synergistic effect, was observed by the addition of phen, and the high extractability of Li⁺ was attained in toluene, benzene, chlorobenzene and o-dichlorobenzene. The extraction equilibrium of Li⁺, Na⁺ and K⁺ (denoted as M⁺) in the presence or absence of phen in chlorobenzene and the adduct formation reaction in the organic phase were studied in detail. The adduct of Li⁺ was Li(tta)(phen) in the wide concentration range of phen in the organic phase, while in Na⁺ and K⁺ M(tta)(phen)₂ also exists in the high concentration region. The maximum value of the separation factor between Li⁺ and Na⁺ was observed in the present system and was larger than that in the Htta-trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO)-benzene system reported previously.     

Determination of rare earth elements in seawater by on-line column preconcentration inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

A home made column of commercially available iminodiacetate resin, Muromac A-1 (50–100 mesh) was used to concentrate rare earth elements (REEs) (15 elements: Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) in seawater. An automated low pressure flow analysis method with on-line column preconcentration/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is described for the determination of REEs in seawater. Sample solutions (adjusted to pH of 3.0) passed through the column. After washing the column with water, the adsorbed elements were subsequently eluted into the plasma with 0.7 M nitric acid. Calibration curves were accomplished by means of purified artificial seawater with a sample loading time of 120 s. Detection limits (DLs) of the on-line column preconcentration/ICP-MS by eight replicate operations were between 0.040 and 0.251 pg ml⁻¹ for REEs in the artificial seawater. The precision was less than 8.9% for REEs and one sample can be processed in 7 min using a 7 ml of sample. The proposed method was applied to determine REEs in coastal seawater of Hiroshima Bay, Japan.     

InGaAsP/InP optical waveguide switch operated by a carrier-induced change in the refractive index

Waveguided semiconductor optical switches operated by a carrier-induced change in the refractive-index associated with the plasma dispersion are proposed. InGaAsP/InP four-port switches having two intersecting single-mode channel waveguides are fabricated by selective liquid-phase epitaxy and investigated at 1.5m wavelength. Optical switching is observed as a result of mode interference in the waveguide intersection region.     

Synthetic approach toward antibiotic tunicamycins — VI total synthesis of tunicamycins

Tunicamycins and their eight analogs have been synthesized by condensation of a N-acetyl-D-glucosamine derivative and an anomeric chloride of tunicaminyl uracil, followed by deprotections and N-acylation.     

Supramolecular porphyrin-fullerene via 'two-point' binding strategy: axial-coordination and cation-crown ether complexation

A highly stable porphyrin-fullerene conjugate with defined distance and orientation, was formed using a newly developed 'two-point' binding strategy involving axial-coordination and cation-crown ether complexation; photochemical studies performed in benzonitrile revealed efficient charge separation and slow charge-recombination in the supramolecular complex.     

The glass-to-liquid transition of the emulsified high-density amorphous ice made by pressure-induced amorphization

Emulsified high-density amorphous ice, made by pressure-induced amorphization of emulsified ice Ih, was decompressed at about 160 K. The onset of an endothermic event was observed around 0.4 GPa during the decompression. This is consistent with existence of the glass transition to a liquid state, implying the close relationship between melting and amorphization.     

The inclusion complex of piromidic acid with dimethyl-β-cyclodextrin in aqueous solution and in the solid state

Inclusion complex formation of piromidic acid (PA) with dimethyl--cyclodextrin (DM--CD) in aqueous solution and in the solid state was confirmed by the solubility method, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR) spectroscopy. The apparent stability constant,K _c , of the complex was estimated to be 244 M^–1. The stoichiometry of the complex was given as the ratio 1:2 of PA to DM--CD. The dissolution rate of the PA/DM--CD complex was much greater than that of intact PA.Presented at the Fourth International Symposium on Inclusion Phenomena and the Third International Symposium on Cyclodextrins, Lancaster, U.K., 20–25 July 1986.
