The intrinsic defects- and impurities-originated photoluminescence from nanodiamond particles of various sizes (5-500 nm) were observed. Luminescence spanning from 500 nm to 800 nm can be excited with 488 nm and 532 nm wavelengths lasers without any high-energy treatment to create the defects/impurities. The luminescence is found to be particle-size and laser-wavelength dependent, suggesting different kinds of defects/impurities predominantly sustain the luminescence from nanodiamonds of different sizes. 相似文献

The synthesis, characterization, and mesomorphic properties of a new type of heteronuclear compounds 1a-c and a Pd complex 1d derived from benzoxazole as the core group are reported. These compounds were prepared by the ring closure reaction of 4-alkoxybenzoic acid 4-[(4-alkoxy-2-hydroxyphenylimino)methyl]phenyl esters 6 in the presence of lead(IV) acetate. All the compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. The phase behaviour of these mesogenic compounds was characterized and studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. All the compounds 1a exhibited nematic (N) and/or smectic C (SmC) phases, as expected for rod-like molecules; however, the compounds 1b and 1c exhibited crystal phases. For those compounds 1a having shorter carbon chains (n = 1, 3, 4) nematic phases were observed, whereas for compounds having longer carbon chains (n = 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14) smectic C behaviour was also observed at lower temperatures. The greater aspect ratio (l/d) of compounds 1a compared with 1b and 1c was found to be required for the observation of liquid crystallinity. The fluorescent properties of these compounds were also examined. All λmax peaks of the absorption and photoluminescence spectra of compounds 1a-1c occurred at c. 316-322 nm and 371-382 nm, respectively. An efficient Godunov‐type numerical method with second‐order accuracy was developed to simulate the water‐hammer problem in piping. The exact solutions of the Riemann problem were analysed and illustrated on the intriguing solution diagram by properly introducing dimensionless variables within reasonably practical ranges. Based on the solution diagram, an efficient fast Riemann solver was also developed. Moreover, small perturbation analysis was performed to demonstrate the relations between the primitive variables, velocity and pressure, for the Riemann problem. The typical shock‐tube problem and the water‐hammer problem were implemented as sample ones to test the numerical method. It was shown that the present numerical method incorporated with Van Leer's flux limiter is a promising one to simulate fluid transient problem for piping in the present study. The degree of colour shift depending on viewing direction in the in-plane switching (IPS) mode has been investigated. The IPS cell with pure twist deformation exhibits a stronger colour shift than that of the IPS cell with tilt as well as twist deformation, although the former has better luminance uniformity in the bright state than the latter. Furthermore, the IPS cell with multi-directional LC orientation, with tilt as well as twist deformation, shows the least colour shift. 相似文献

An intensive study has been conducted to compare the effects of malei hydrazine (MH) and hydroquinone (HQ) on the liquid crystallinity and phase transition behavior in the ABA/HQ/TFTA and ABA/MH/TFTA copolyesters (p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) and tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (TFTA)). These two copolyesters were prepared by thin‐film polymerization and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing light microscope (PLM), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), as well as Cerius2 computational simulation. Characterization and comparison of the liquid crystalline (LC) evolution and morphology changes of HQ moiety with corresponding MH moiety suggest that ABA/MH/TFTA system is energetically favorable to mesophase formation than ABA/HQ/TFTA system. When the films are quenched, a surface microcrack decoration is observed in both systems. Both systems, which have the persistence ratio larger than 6.42, satisfy the minimum requirement for the LC formation by molecular science software. The ABA/MH/TFTA film exhibits only one single peak transition. However, two distinct transitions have been observed in the ABA/HQ/TFTA system. The average Avrami exponent, n, is ~1.2, and PLM and WAXD results suggest mesophase transition in ABA/MH/TFTA film. As reflected by the results obtained from PLM, WAXD, and DSC studies, the phase transition is confirmed as crystal → nematic → isotropic in ABA/HQ/TFTA copolyester. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The performance of Ni-foam pasted Ni(OH)2 prepared from co-precipitated Ni(OH)2 with Zinc (Zn) and Cobalt (Co) as the positive electrode active material of an asymmetric electrochemical capacitor (EC)
is studied for the enhancement of the capacitor’s specific energy and power densities. A co-precipitated Ni(OH)2/activated carbon (AC) composite material and AC were used as a positive and negative electrode material. The AC in the positive
electrode is used as an electrolyte reservoir to reduce ionic diffusion resistance regardless of charge/discharge current
density. In addition, the simultaneous presence of Zn and Co ions in the Ni(OH)2 layer improves the efficiency of the active material and reduces the resistance of the unit cell. It was observed that through
the effects of the additives in the positive electrode, the asymmetric EC exhibits a high energy density with 35.7 Wh/kg,
based on the active material. Furthermore, the energy density decreasing behavior at a high discharge current density was
retarded.

We report on the 320 Gb/s (40 Gb/s × 8 channels) WDM transmission experiment using short-period dispersion-managed fiber. After 320-km transmission, the average Q-factor was measured to be better than 20.4 dB. In addition, we compared the performances of various types of fibers in 40-Gb/s based systems. The results show that the SPDMF was robust to both the intra-channel and inter-channel nonlinearities due to its small average dispersion and large local dispersion. 相似文献

We report the synthesis of a red light-emitting and photopolymerizable smectic liquid crystal (reactive mesogen). We investigate the suitability of polymer networks formed from smectic reactive mesogens for use in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The use of mixtures of smectic reactive mesogens is shown to lower the processing temperature for the fabrication of OLEDs to room temperature. We also report efficient energy transfer from a nematic polymer network host to a smectic light-emitting dopant and polarized emission from a polymer network formed from an aligned smectic reactive mesogen. 相似文献
