Mass spectrometry in cardenolide chemistry—I

The mass spectrum of penta acetyl gitoxin is reported and discussed. This cardenolide derivative has recently been the subject of extensive metabolic study. Fragmentation processes are described which account for all of the major ions. High resolution measurements, metastable peaks and mass shifts, for the propionyl derivative, are reported to establish the validity of these proposals. A brief indication of the potential value of this technique, when combined with deuteroacetylation, to metabolic studies in this field is given, along with comments on the spectra of related compounds.     

Analytical applications of crown ethers : III. Extraction and determination of nitrophenol isomers

The oxidation of aldehydes by dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6-potassium permangante complex is presented. Results obtained by this procedure showed that the presence of crown ether (DCC) and the catalyst play an important role in the oxidation of the aldehydes. The stoichiometry found corresponds to 2 μeq of permanganate per 1 μmol of aldehydes in all cases. Alcohols and ketones are not oxidized. Finally, a method for quantitative evaluation of aldehydes is proposed.     

PMR spectra of the lignins ofCystoseira barbata at different ages

The PMR spectra of the dioxane lignins from the brown algaCystoseira have been studied. It has been established that the lignins isolated from specimens ofCystoseira of different ages have different degrees of substitution of the C₃ side chain and differ in their degree of condensation. The most highly condensed is the dioxane lignin of young specimens ofCystoseira (age up to one year) and the least condensed the Björkman lignin ofCystoseira aged more than three years. All the PMR spectra of preparations of the lignin of the alga under investigation contain the signals of protons present in coumaran structures, their amount being the greatest in the lignins of the youngest samples and decreasing with increasing age of the alga.Odessa Institute of Structural Engineering. On the synthesis of the N2F+5 cation. A critical comment on the paper by Toy and Stringham.

Toy and Stringham recently reported [1] the synthesis of N₂F⁺₅ (CF₃)₃CO^-, a salt containing the novel pentafluorohydrazinium cation. This cation would be of significant academic and practical interest [2] since it would constitute the first known example of a substituted NF⁺₄ cation, i.e. an NF⁺₄ cation in which a fluorine ligand is replaced by an NF₂ group. According to the authors of [1], N₂F⁺₅(CF₃)₃CO^- was formed in a very unusual reaction involving the transfer of a fluorine cation from (CF₃)₃COF to N₂F₄ according to:

On Hexagonal Perovskites with Cationic Vacancies. I. Compounds of the Type Ba₂B □_2/3Re^VIIO₆ Compounds of Type Ba₂B□_2/3Re^VIIO₆ are formed with B^III = Sm? Gd Ho? Lu, Y, Sc, In (yellow); Tb (black-brown); Dy (yellow-orange). They crystallize with B^III = Sm? Lu, Y and Sc in a rhombohedral layer structure of 12 L-type (space group R3 m; sequence: cchhcchhcchh) with 6 formula units in the unit cell.     

Automation of the gas analysis of14C-labelled compounds utilizing a piston-type counter tube

In this paper an automatic apparatus designed for the radioactivity measurement of¹⁴C-labelled organic compounds in the gaseous phase is described. The labelled organic compounds are combusted in a mixture of argon and oxygen. After combustion the oxygen content of the gas is eliminated by passing it through a copper packing. The water and heteroelements present are also removed and the radioactive carbon dioxide gas is swept by argon carrier gas into a piston-type counter tube. In the counter tube the piston forming a dividing wall moves forward in accordance with the rate of combustion and sweeping, and thus sucks the gases leaving the combustion tube into the effective tube volume. The anode wire is carried by a reel located in the piston and a spring device ensures its stretched state. At the end of the sweeping period methane is fed into the counter tube and the activity of the argon—methane—carbon dioxide mixture is measured in the limited proportional region. Manual and automatic operation is possible. The piston-type counter tube provides possibility for strandardization by means of extrapolation and for measurement of absolute activities.     

A study of the process of lignification of one-year willow wood

Conclusions 1. The content of lignin in the wood ofSalix viminalis andSalix acutifolia increases with the growth of the shoots during shortened days and also in drier climatic periods.2. The monosaccharides, glucose, fructose, and arabinose take part in the synthesis of the lignin of young wood ofSalix viminalis andSalix acutifolia. The formation of lignin of one-year willow wood takes place from May to January (with a maximum in June–July). Infrared spectra of cyclic ethers and their derivatives

Data for the characteristic bands of cyclic ethers are reviewed. The infrared spectra of a number of 2-mono- and 2, 5-di-substituted derivatives of tetrahydrofuran are investigated. Absorption bands at about 900 cm⁻¹ are related to pulsation vibrations, and those at about 1200 cm⁻¹ to antisymmetric skeletal vibrations, of the tetrahydrofuran ring. It is shown that to confirm the presence of a tetrahydrofuran ring in a molecule, it is necessary to take into account not only the band of valence antisymmetric vibrations of the group C-O-C (ν _C-O-C ^as 1075 cm⁻¹), but also bands due to ring pulsation vibrations (ring symmetric valence vibrations ν _sk ^s ∼ 900 cm¹).     

Pyridylethylation of cyclic thioamides and amides. I. Pyridylethylation in the tetrazole and 1, 2, 4-triazole series

1-Aryltetrazoline-5-thiones and 4-aryl-1, 2, 4-triazolyl-3-thiones which are cyclic amides and potential mercapto compounds have been 2-pyridylethylated for the first time. It is shown that in the compounds prepared the 2-pyridylethyl-2 group is on the nitrogen atom of the thioamide group, so that the above compounds react as thiones.
