Structures and Reaction Mechanism of Novel Metal-Carbene Complexes Derived from Hypervalent Diazadiselenathiapentalenes

Abstract

Novel metal-carbene complexes (4) with a metallapentalene framework have been obtained from hypervalent diazadiselenathiapentalenes (3) by treating with Pt(PPh₃)₄, Pd(PPh₃)₄ and RhCl(PPh₃)₃. X-Ray investigations revealed that the central hypervalent sulfur atom in 3 was substituted by a metal atom to form M-Se bonds in the resultant metallapentalene framework.     

Determination of l-lactate by differential pulse polarography with covalently immobilized enzyme on Chitopearl

Summary The covalent bonding of l-lactate oxidase (no E.C.) to cross-linked copolymers of chitosan (Chitopearl) using the glutaraldehyde method is described and applied to the determination of l-lactate in serums of diseased and normal animals. The bioreactor packing of the immobilized enzyme is stable for at least 4 months and can be continuously used for the rapid and simple determination of l-lactate. The reduction current of pyruvate, corresponding to the product of enzymatic reaction, is determined by differential pulse polarography. The reproducibility (RSD) for 10 mol/l l-lactate is 0.78% (n=6) and the detection limit is 0.62 mol/l (k=2, confidence level 97.72%).     

Reaction of 2-propargylphenylcarbamates with diphenyliodonium salts via Meyer-Schuster rearrangement

The syntheses of 2,3-dihydro-4-quinolones from 2-propargylphenylcarbamates by one-pot tandem process that involves Meyer-Schuster rearrangement or arylative Meyer-Schuster rearrangement/Michael addition of carbamate nitrogen to the resulting vinyl ketones have been developed. Phenylcarbamates tethering tertiary propargyl alcohols underwent arylative Meyer-Schuster rearrangement/Friedel-Crafts alkylation to produce 2,3-dihydroindenones.     

Determination of hydrogen ion by ion chromatography (IC) with sulfonated cation-exchange resin as the stationary phase and aqueous EDTA (ethylenediamine-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid) solution as the mobile phase

An ion chromatographic (IC) method has been developed for determination of hydrogen ion (H⁺). It is based on the use of sulfonated cation-exchange resin as stationary phase, aqueous ethylenediamine-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid (dipotassium salt, EDTA-2K, written as K₂H₂Y) solution as mobile phase, and conductivity for detection. H⁺ was separated mainly by cation-exchange, but its elution was accelerated by the presence of EDTA. The order of elution for the model cations was H⁺ > Li⁺ > Na⁺ > NH₄ ⁺ > Ca²⁺ > > Mg²⁺. A sharp and highly symmetrical peak was obtained for H⁺ and this was attributed to the capacity of H₂Y₂ ^2– to receive and bind H⁺. H⁺ was detected conductiometrically and detector response (reduction in conductivity as a result of H⁺+H₂Y^2–→H₃Y^–) was linearly proportional to the concentration of H⁺ in the sample. The detection limit for H⁺ with this IC system was better than 4.7 μmol L^–1. A significant advantage of this method was the ability to separate and determine, in one step, H⁺ and other cations. The successful determination of H⁺ and other cation species in real acid-rain samples demonstrated the usefulness of this method.

DNA PHOTOREACTIVATING ENZYME FROM SILKWORM

An ammonium-sulfate-precipitable (33–70%) fraction in extracts from eggs of silkworm Bombyx mori contains photoreactivating enzyme that reactivates the transforming activity of UV inactivated Hemophilus influenzae DNA. The action spectrum for in vitro photoreactivation with the enzyme has a broad peak around 365–385 nm, with a shoulder extending to 460 nm. This relatively higher photoreactivation efficiency at wavelengths longer than 450 nm seems to be a unique feature of DNA photoreactivating enzyme of silkworm. Using gel filtration, a mol wt of 42,000 was estimated for the enzyme. Optimum and isoionic pH of the enzyme were 7.2 and 5.4, respectively. These properties of silkworm enzyme are within the range of variations in reported biochemical characteristics of photoreactivating enzymes from different species.

Elliptic Apostol sums and their reciprocity laws

We introduce an elliptic analogue of the Apostol sums, which we call elliptic Apostol sums. These sums are defined by means of certain elliptic functions with a complex parameter having positive imaginary part. When , these elliptic Apostol sums represent the well-known Apostol generalized Dedekind sums. Also these elliptic Apostol sums are modular forms in the variable . We obtain a reciprocity law for these sums, which gives rise to new relations between certain modular forms (of one variable).
