Superconductivity and metal-insulator transition in Cu(Ir<Subscript>1−<Emphasis Type="Italic">x</Emphasis></Subscript>Rh<Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">x</Emphasis></Subscript>)<Subscript>2</Subscript>S<Subscript>4</Subscript>

A new thiospinel CuIr₂S₄ exhibits a metal-insulator (M-I) transition at 226 K, while CuRh₂S₄ shows a superconducting transition at 4.70 K. We present a systematic study of electrical and magnetic properties of Cu(Ir_1?x Rh _x )₂S₄. TheM-I transition of CuIr₂S₄ is accompanied by a structural phase transition from tetragonal symmetry in insulating phase to cubic symmetry in high temperature metallic phase. With increasing Rh contentx, the sharpM-I transition shifts to lower temperature forx≦0.10. The samples show semiconductive behavior for 0.10≦0.30 between 4.2 and 300 K, and recover the metallic state forx≧0.50. The superconducting transition may occur for very close tox=1.00. Magnetic susceptibility shows the jump at theM-I transition temperature and the variation ofx leads to a systematic change of the magnetic susceptibilities, which is consistent with the electrical characteristic feature.     

Accurate Stabilization of a 3 mW Single-Mode Output He-Ne Laser by Intermittent Frequency Offset Locking to an Iodine Stabilized He-Ne Laser

A high-power, unmodulated frequency standard laser light with low running cost is a powerful tool for industrial measurement involving laser calibration and interferometry in length and shape. To obtain such a laser light, we developed an intermittent frequency offset locked laser (IFOL laser). This laser system, composed of an iodine stabilized He-Ne laser (I₂SL) and a high-powered symmetric three-mode He-Ne laser (HP-3ML, optical output=5 mW), provides two stabilization operational modes: (1) independent mode (I-mode) and (2) slave mode (S-mode). Utilizing the frequency pulling effect, HP-3ML is stabilized at the condition of symmetric three-mode oscillation, and a 3 mW single-mode light with frequency instability of 10^-12 is obtained (I-mode). When the optical frequency deviates from the allowed limit during I-mode, HP-3ML is temporarily offset-locked to I₂SL (S-mode) with frequency resettability of 10^-10 and frequency instability of 10^-12. After completion of the drift reset in S-mode, HP-3ML is stabilized in I-mode again, and then I₂SL is turned off. In a typical case of allowed drift in ±1 MHz, repetitive operation of I-mode for 10 days and S-mode for 5 min was satisfactory. Such an intermittent operation reduces the working time of I₂SL dramatically, resulting in low running cost that enables long-term use in industrial measurement.     

Synthesis of a soluble conjugated cumulene polymer: poly(biphenyl‐4,4′‐diyl‐1,4‐bis(4‐dodecyloxyphenyl)‐buta‐1,2,3‐triene‐1,4‐diyl)

A conjugated polymer with a butatriene segment in the main chain, poly(biphenyl‐4,4′‐diyl‐1,4‐bis(4‐dodecyloxyphenyl)buta‐1,2,3‐triene‐1,4‐diyl), was synthesized from 1,4‐bis(4‐bromophenyl)‐1,4‐bis(4‐dodecyloxyphenyl)buta‐1,2,3‐triene by dehalogenative polycondensation using Ni(cod)₂. The polymer was well soluble in usual organic solvents such as CHCl₃ and THF. Structural analyses and characterizations were carried out by IR, NMR, UV‐Vis, PL, and Raman spectroscopy, as well as electrical conductivity. It is suggested that π‐conjugation is extended to some degree through biphenylylene and butatrienylene linkages.
