Synthesis and properties of a well‐defined glycopolymer via living radical polymerization

A well‐defined glycopolymer was synthesized to investigate its properties. The glycopolymer was obtained with a narrow polydispersity by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of styrene carrying acetylated lactose and by the subsequent deprotection. The cylindrical structure and helical conformation of the polymer were measured by circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The affinities of the polymers towards lectins depended on the degree of polymerization (DP), and the polymers with higher DP showed stronger affinity. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Separation and determination of quaternary ammonium compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography with a hydrophilic polymer column and conductometric detection

An HPLC method has been developed for separation and determination of long alkyl chain quaternary ammonium compounds. A column packed with a hydrophilic polymer packing, Shodex Asahipak GF-310 HQ, and a water–acetonitrile mixture containing 4,4′-bipyridyl and hydrochloric acid were used to depress hydrophobic adsorption of the quaternary ammonium compounds and increase the sensitivity of the conductometric detection with a micromembrane suppressor. Dodecyltrimethylammonium, cetyltrimethylammonium, tetradecyldimethylbenzylammonium and stearyltrimethylammonium ions can be completely separated from one another and quantified at 0.1 nmol level.     

On the existence of continuous (approximate) roots of algebraic equations

The present paper considers the existence of continuous roots of algebraic equations with coefficients being continuous functions defined on compact Hausdorff spaces. For a compact Hausdorff space X, C(X) denotes the Banach algebra of all continuous complex-valued functions on X with the sup norm ∥⋅_∥∞. The algebra C(X) is said to be algebraically closed if each monic algebraic equation with C(X) coefficients has a root in C(X). First we study a topological characterization of a first-countable compact (connected) Hausdorff space X such that C(X) is algebraically closed. The result has been obtained by Countryman Jr, Hatori-Miura and Miura-Niijima and we provide a simple proof for metrizable spaces.Also we consider continuous approximate roots of the equation zn−f=0 with respect to z, where f∈C(X), and provide a topological characterization of compact Hausdorff space X with dimX?1 such that the above equation has an approximate root in C(X) for each f∈C(X), in terms of the first ?ech cohomology of X.     

A characterization of heat balls by a mean value property for temperatures

We discuss an inverse mean value property of solutions of the heat equation. We show that, under certain conditions, a volume mean value identity characterizes heat balls.
