Crystal structure of the pyrochlore oxide superconductor KOs2O6

We report the single-crystal X-ray analysis of the structure of the pyrochlore oxide superconductor KOs₂O₆. The structure was identified as the β-pyrochlore structure with space group and lattice constant at : the K atom is located at the 8b site, not at the 16d site as in conventional pyrochlore oxides. We found an anomalously large atomic displacement parameter at for the K cation, which suggests that the K cation weakly bound to an oversized Os₁₂O₁₈ cage exhibits intensive rattling, as recently observed for clathrate compounds. The rattling of A cations is a common feature in the series of β-pyrochlore oxide superconductors AOs₂O₆ (A=Cs, Rb and K), and is greatest for the smallest K cation.     

Photoswitching properties of photonic band gap material containing azo-polymer liquid crystal

A photochemically tunable photonic crystal was prepared by infiltration of the polymer liquid crystal (LC) having azo-chromophores in a SiO₂ inverse opal structure. The SiO₂ inverse opal film infiltrated with the polymer LC reflected a light corresponding to the periodicity as well as the refractive indices of the inverse opal structure. Linearly polarized light irradiation caused the shift of the reflection band to longer wavelength more than 15 nm. This is caused by the formation of uniaxially anisotropic molecular orientation of the polymer LC. The switched state was stable under interior light, and reversible switching of the reflection band can be achieved by the linearly and circularly polarized light irradiation. This photoswitching property will be suitable not only for various optical materials, but also for introduction of defects in the photonic crystals.     

High-performance liquid chromatographic assay of N(G)-monomethyl-L-arginine, N(G),N(G)-dimethyl-L-arginine, and N(G),N(G)'-dimethyl-L-arginine using 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2, 1,3-benzoxadiazole as a fluorescent reagent

N(G)-Monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA), N(G),N(G)-dimethyl-L-arginine (ADMA), and N(G),N(G)'-dimethyl-L-arginine (SDMA) are emerging cardiovascular risk factors. A high-performance liquid chromatographic method with fluorescence detection for the simultaneous determination of L-NMMA, ADMA and SDMA is described. The assay employed 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-F) as a fluorescent derivatization reagent. After solid phase extraction with cation-exchange column, the methylated arginines were converted to fluorescent derivatives with NBD-F, and the derivatives were separated within 32 min on a reversed-phase column. Nomega-Propyl-L-arginine was Used as an internal standard. Extrapolated detection limits were 12 nM (12 fmol per injection) for L-NMMA and 20 nM (20 fmol per injection) for ADMA and SDMA, respectively, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The calibration curves for L-NMMA, ADMA and SDMA were linear within the range of 50-5000 fmol. The method was applied to the quantitative determination of L-NMMA, ADMA and SDMA in 200 microl of rat plasma. The concentrations of L-NMMA, ADMA and SDMA in rat plasma were 0.16 +/- 0.03, 0.80 +/- 0.25 and 0.40 +/- 0.21 microM, respectively (n = 5).     

Polymerization of vinyl monomers in the water–1,4-dioxane system containing peroxide and water-soluble polymer

Water-solube polymer (PST) containing triethylenetetramine side chain was prepared by the amination of chloromethylated polystyrene with triethylenetetramine in 1,4-dioxane. The polymerization of vinyl monomers was carried out in the water–organic solvent system containing PST and a very small amount of peroxide. The polymerization of methyl methacrylate proceeded smoothly in the presence of both peroxide and PST. It was found that the polymerization was initiated with the radicals generated by the interaction between hydroperoxide and amino groups of PST. 1,4-Dioxane hydroperoxide showed a high activity for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The maximum rate of the polymerization was observed at 60°C and in an approximately neutral solution. The addition of suitable amount of Cu(II) accelerated the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The selective polymerization of vinyl monomers was observed in this system.     

(3+1)-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamical expansion of hot and dense matter in ultra-relativistic nuclear collision

A full (3+1)-dimensional calculation using Lagrangian hydrodynamics is proposed for relativistic nuclear collisions. This calculation enables us to evaluate the anisotropic flow of the hadronic matter which appears in non-central and/or asymmetrical relativistic nuclear collisions. Applying hydrodynamical calculations to the deformed uranium collisions in the AGS energy region, we discuss the nature of the space-time structure and particle distributions in detail.
