Optimal allocation of amplifiers in a dispersion-managed line for a wavelength-division-multiplexed soliton transmission system

Optimal allocation of amplifiers in a dispersion-managed line is theoretically derived by means of minimizing the collision-induced frequency shift in a two-channel wavelength-division-multiplexed soliton transmission system. Almost complete cancellation of the frequency shift can be obtained for such a system with any strength of dispersion management.     

Structures of xantholides A and B,two new guaianolides from xanthium canadense mill.

The structures of xantholides A and B were deduced on the basis of IR and NMR spectra, and confirmed by X-ray analysis. Xantholide A inhibited the larval growth of Drosophila melanogaster.     

Overtone intensities in resonance Raman scattering

A model calculation of resonance Raman scattering tensors has been carried out for a diatomic molecule with a harmonic potential for the ground state and a linear repulsive potential for the excited state. Expressions for scattering tensors have been obtained by using a series of recurrence formulas induced from the Green function of the nuclear hamiltonian of the repulsive potential of the excited state and nuclear wavefunctions for the harmonic potential. The relative scattering intensities of overtones depend on the gradient of the repulsive potential curve and are interpreted in terms of the overlap integrals between nuclear wavefunctions of upper and lower states.

Beam-size measurement with optical diffraction radiation at KEK accelerator test facility

An experiment on the investigation of optical diffraction radiation (ODR) from a slit target as a possible tool for noninvasive electron beam-size diagnostics has been performed at the KEK accelerator test facility. The experimental setup has been installed at the diagnostics section of the extraction line. We have performed the first incoherent ODR observation from a slit target. The measured angular distributions are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical expectation. The beam-size effect onto the ODR angular pattern has been observed. Moreover, the sensitivity to the beam size as small as 14 microm has been achieved.     

Schulzeines A-C, new alpha-glucosidase inhibitors from the marine sponge Penares schulzei

Three new alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, schulzeines A-C (1-3), were isolated from the marine sponge Penares schulzei. Their structures were elucidated by spectral analysis and chemical degradations to be the isoquinoline alkaloids, encompassing two amino acids, and C(28) fatty acid, the last of which was sulfated. Absolute stereochemistry of schulzeines was determined by application of the modified Mosher analysis to fragments obtained by chemical degradation. Schulzeines A-C inhibit alpha-glucosidase with IC(50) values of 48-170 nM.     

Simple solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics for cylindrically symmetric systems

Simple, self-similar, analytic solutions of 1+3-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics are presented for cylindrically symmetric fireballs corresponding to central collisions of heavy ions at relativistic bombarding energies.     

Simple solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics for systems with ellipsoidal symmetry

Simple, self-similar, analytic solutions of (1+3)-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics are presented for ellipsoidally symmetric finite fireballs corresponding to non-central collisions of heavy ions at relativistic bombarding energies. The hydrodynamical solutions are obtained for a new, general family of equations of state with the possibility of describing phase transitions.     

Simple solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics for longitudinally expanding systems

Simple, self-similar, analytic solutions of 1+1-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics are presented, generalizing Bjorken's solution to inhomogeneous rapidity distribution.
