Here we report a modular strategy for preparing physically cross-linked and mechanically robust free-standing hydrogels comprising unique thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) domains and magnetic nanoparticles both of which serve as the physical cross-linkers resulting in hydrogels that can be used as magnetically responsive soft actuators. A series of amphiphilic LC pentablock copolymers of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(5-cholesteryloxypentyl methacrylate) (PC5MA), and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blocks in the sequence of PAA-PC5MA-PEO-PC5MA-PAA were prepared using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. These pentablock copolymers served as macromolecular ligands to template Fe(3)O(4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), which were directly anchored to the polymer chains through the coordination bonds with the carboxyl groups of PAA blocks. The resulting polymer/MNP nanocomposites comprised a complicated hierarchical structure in which polymer-coated MNP clusters were dispersed in a microsegregated pentablock copolymer matrix that further contained LC ordering. Upon swelling, the hierarchical structure was disrupted and converted to a network structure, in which MNP clusters were anchored to the polymer chains and LC domains stayed intact to connect solvated PEO and PAA blocks, leading to a free-standing LC magnetic hydrogel (LC ferrogel). By varying the PAA weight fraction (f(AA)) in the pentablock copolymers, the swelling degrees (Q) of the resulting LC ferrogels were tailored. Rheological experiments showed that these physically cross-linked free-standing LC ferrogels exhibit good mechanical strength with storage moduli G' of around 10(4)-10(5) Pa, similar to that of natural tissues. Furthermore, application of a magnetic field induced bending actuation of the LC ferrogels. Therefore, these physically cross-linked and mechanically robust LC ferrogels can be used as soft actuators and artificial muscles. Moreover, this design strategy is a versatile platform for incorporation of different types of nanoparticles (metallic, inorganic, biological, etc.) into multifunctional amphiphilic block copolymers, resulting in unique free-standing hybrid hydrogels of good mechanical strength and integrity with tailored properties and end applications.  相似文献

BackgroundIn this research, a decision making system, based on fuzzy inference mechanism as proposed by Mamdani, is presented. Literature suggests that there is a lack of consistency among dentists in choosing treatment plan(s). So, this research work aims to facilitate the dentist decide the treatment plan(s) of the broken tooth.MethodsAn expert system based on fuzzy logic has been designed to accept inaccurate and vague values of dental signs and symptoms associated with the broken tooth. We designed a knowledge base with 60 rules and used Mamdani inference algorithm to decide the possible one or more treatment(s) and suggest the same to the dentist.ResultsThe results proposed by the system are compared with the dentists’ suggestions. The Chi-square test of homogeneity is conducted on 100 randomly generated sample cases with the help of three professional dentists. It is found that the results produced by the system are consistent with the treatment plan(s) proposed by the dentists. Chi-square value of the test is 3.843565 which is less than the critical value which is 12.592. Hence, we are unable to reject the null hypothesis that assumes the two populations are homogeneous with respect to treatments.ConclusionsThe accuracy of the proposed decision support system for the treatment of broken tooth enhances the confidence level of the dentists while making decision regarding the treatment plan(s). Simple and interactive GUI makes it easy to use.  相似文献

We introduce dielectric elliptical photonic nanowires to funnel efficiently the spontaneous emission of an embedded emitter into a single optical mode. Inside a wire with a moderate lateral aspect ratio, the electromagnetic environment is largely dominated by a single guided mode, with a linear polarization oriented along the ellipse major axis. The resulting monomode spontaneous emission is maintained over a broad wavelength range, a key asset of this 1D photonic structure. Our theoretical analysis is completed by an experimental study of GaAs elliptical photonic wires with embedded InAs quantum dots. In particular, the fraction of collected photons with the desired linear polarization can exceed 95%.  相似文献

Many enzymes, particularly in one single family, with highly conserved structures and folds exhibit rather distinct substrate specificities. The underlying mechanism remains elusive, the resolution of which is of great importance for biochemistry, biophysics, and bioengineering. Here, we performed a neutron scattering experiment and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on two structurally similar CYP450 proteins; CYP101 primarily catalyzes one type of ligands, then CYP2C9 can catalyze a large range of substrates. We demonstrated that it is the high density of salt bridges in CYP101 that reduces its structural flexibility, which controls the ligand access channel and the fluctuation of the catalytic pocket, thus restricting its selection on substrates. Moreover, we performed MD simulations on 146 different kinds of CYP450 proteins, spanning distinct biological categories including Fungi, Archaea, Bacteria, Protista, Animalia, and Plantae, and found the above mechanism generally valid. We demonstrated that, by fine changes of chemistry (salt-bridge density), the CYP450 superfamily can vary the structural flexibility of its member proteins among different biological categories, and thus differentiate their substrate specificities to meet the specific biological needs. As this mechanism is well-controllable and easy to be implemented, we expect it to be generally applicable in future enzymatic engineering to develop proteins of desired substrate specificities.  相似文献

An efficient and remarkably general method for the synthesis of cyclic alkenyl ethers via the Cu(I)-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization of O-alkynylbenzaldehydes has been developed. The survey of metal catalysts and solvents revealed that the combination of copper(I) iodide and DMF was the catalytic system of choice. The reaction most probably proceeds via the nucleophilic addition of alcohols 2 to O-alkynylbenzaldehydes 1 to generate the corresponding hemiacetals, and subsequent nucleophilic attack of the hemiacetal oxygen to the copper coordinated alkyne would give the annulation products 3. In all cases, the reaction proceeded in a regiospecific manner leading to the six-membered endocyclic products via 6-endo-dig cyclization.  相似文献

Copolyamides based on ε-caprolactam and AH salt were prepared by copolymerization of various combinations of ε-caprolactam and AH salt in the presence of a cationic resin. In terms of adhesivity towards metals they have proved their superiority over nylon 6, nylon 6, 6, and the copolyamides of ε-caprolactam and AH salt, prepared in presence of water. Adhesive property of the copolyamide was found to be increased with increasing proportion of AH salt in the combinations. ε-Caprolactam (1 part) and AH salt (5 parts) in presence of a cationic resin (0.55%) were copolymerized to give a best performing copolyamide: yield 93%, mp 232°C, relative viscosity 2.42, and shear tensile strength 620 kg/in.2  相似文献

Fly ash is combustion residue from burning of pulverised coal in electric utility generating stations. The annual production of fly ash in India is around 100 MTPA and is responsible for several environmental hazards, which is quite well documented. There are stringent norms for its land disposal and hence utilisation of fly ash is imperative. Fly ash has more than 85% of SiO2 and Al2O3 content and is therefore a tailor made raw material for production of zeolite. An innovative process has been developed for synthesis of zeolites using fly ash as a substitute for conventional raw materials viz. sodium silicate and aluminate. The process consists of three major steps viz. fusion of caustic soda and fly ash for optimal extraction of silicate and aluminate, aging step which provides time for formation of nuclei and hydrothermal crystallization resulting in activation of nuclei into well defined crystals. Low temperature operation, simplicity of process and optimal recycling of unused reactants and process water are special features of these processes. Zeolites have high internal and external surface areas and also exhibit high exchange capacities, which makes them versatile materials for targeting wide range of pollutants, ranging from cationic to anionic and hydrophilic to hydrophobic molecules. The major uses of zeolites are in adsorption, ion exchange and as catalysts. The use of zeolites in environmental remediation is restricted due to procurement problem and prohibitive cost, which can be overcome by using low cost fly ash based zeolites (FAZs). The synthesis of FAZ-A and FAZ-Y and their modifications either by transition metal incorporation or by surfactant treatment for various environmental applications in air, water and soil remediation are addressed in this review.  相似文献
