Private labels and retail assortment planning: a differential evolution approach

Despite the longstanding recognition of the importance of product assortment planning (PAP), existing literature has failed to provide satisfactory solutions to a great deal of problems that reside in this area of research. The issue of optimal assortment planning in the retail sector becomes even more important in periods of economic crisis, as retailers must adapt their product portfolios to new evolving patterns of consumer buying behaviour and reduced levels of consumer’s purchasing power. Private labels (PLs) typically experience significant growth in times of recession, due to their low prices, and the reduced disposable income of households. In this direction, the present paper introduces differential evolution to assist retailers in adapting their product portfolios in periods of economic recession and facilitate strategic PAP decisions, related to (a) optimal variety of PL product categories, (b) optimal service level of PL merchandise within a product category, and hence, (c) optimal balance between PLs and National Brands in a retailer’s product portfolio. The interrelated issue of assortment adaptation across different store formats is also considered. Economic recessions contribute to the prolonged upward evolution in PL share, and hence, our mechanism facilitates decisions that are nowadays more important than ever before. The proposed mechanism is illustrated through an implementation to an empirical dataset derived from a random sample of 1928 consumers who participated in a large-scale computer assisted telephone survey during the current economic crisis period.     

Positive solutions for singular p(z)$p(z)$-equations

We consider a Dirichlet problem driven by the anisotropic p-Laplacian, with a reaction having the competing effects of a singular term and a parametric superlinear perturbation. We prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the changes of the set of positive solutions as the parameter varies. We also prove the existence of minimal positive solutions.     

Densification via polynomials,languages, and frames

It is known that every countable totally ordered set can be embedded into a countable dense one. We extend this result to totally ordered commutative monoids and to totally ordered commutative residuated lattices (the latter result fails in the absence of commutativity). The latter has applications to density elimination of semilinear substructural logics. In particular we obtain as a corollary a purely algebraic proof of the standard completeness of uninorm logic; the advantage over the known proof-theoretic proof and the semantical proof is that it is extremely short and transparent and all details can be verified easily using standard algebraic constructions.

Geodesics as products of one-parameter subgroups in compact lie groups and homogeneous spaces

We study the geodesic equation for compact Lie groups G and homogeneous spaces $G/H$, and we prove that the geodesics are orbits of products $\exp (t{X}_1)\cdots \exp (t{X}_N)$ of one-parameter subgroups of G, provided that a simple algebraic condition for the Riemannian metric is satisfied. For the group $SO(3)$, we relate this type of geodesics to the free motion of a symmetric top. Moreover, by using series of Lie subgroups of G, we construct a wealth of metrics having the aforementioned type of geodesics.     

Computer‐Aided Estimation of Diffusion Coefficients in Non‐Solvent/Polymer Systems

A novel method for estimating the mutual and self‐diffusion coefficients of a non‐solvent/polymer system is proposed in this work. The idea is to study the evaporation process from non‐solvent/solvent/polymer systems as a one‐dimensional numerical experiment and to use polymer solution weight versus time data to fit the unknown parameters of the diffusion‐coefficient correlations based on free‐volume theory. For this purpose, the evaporation process is modeled as a coupled heat‐ and mass‐transfer problem with a moving boundary, and the Galerkin finite‐element method is used to solve simultaneously the non‐linear governing equations. This method is successfully applied to the estimation of water–cellulose acetate diffusion coefficients and is valid over the whole range of temperatures and concentrations for practical applications in membrane technology. Additionally, there is a detailed discussion on if water affects the morphology of the final cellulosic membrane by studying the concentration profiles of the constituents of the casting solution.     

On a nonhomogeneous,nonlinear Dirichlet eigenvalue problem

We consider a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for the Dirichlet $(p,q)$-Laplacian with a sign-changing Carath$\acute{\mathrm{e}}$odory reaction. Using variational tools, truncation and comparison techniques, and critical groups, we prove an existence and multiplicity result which is global in the parameter $\lambda >0$ (bifurcation-type theorem). Our work here complements the recent one by Papageorgiou–Qin–Rădulescu, Bull. Sci. Math. 172 (2021).
