Band-edge emission in CuI single crystals

The photoluminescence spectra of CuI single crystals have been studied at T = 4.2 K and at various excitation levels. The emission band of donor-acceptor pairs (DAP) with a maximum at about 4200 Å has been shown to possess a complex structure. Theoretical analyses and exciton spectroscopy data make it possible to calculate the ionization energies for the donors and acceptors participating in the formation of DAP, which are equal to E_D = = 0.045?0.065 eV and E_A = 0.155?0.170 eV, respectively. The fine structure of emission due to the annihilation of excitons bound on acceptor pairs (band maximum 4075 Å) has been detected and calculated. The energy of the longitudinal optical phonon participating in the exciton-phonon interaction (LO ? 18.7 meV) has been determined.     

On the feasibility to study inverse proximity effect in a single S/F bilayer by Polarized Neutron Reflectometry

Here we report on a feasibility study aiming to explore the potential of Polarized Neutron Reflectometry (PNR) for detecting the inverse proximity effect in a single superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayer. Experiments, conducted on the V (40 nm)/Fe (1 nm) S/F bilayer, have shown that experimental spin asymmetry measured at T = 0.5T _C is shifted towards higher Q values compared to the curve measured at T = 1.5T _C . Such a shift can be described by the appearance in superconducting vanadium of magnetic sublayer with a thickness of 7 nm and a magnetization of +0.8 kG.     

Isotope effect in hydrogen peroxide formation during H2O and D2O sonication

The kinetics of hydrogen peroxide formation have been studied during H2O and D2O sonication in the presence of argon and oxygen (f = 22 kHz, I = 3.0 W cm-2, Pac = 0.52 W ml-1, V = 20 ml, T = 20 degrees C). It was found that the sonochemical reaction rate W has a zero order with respect to hydrogen peroxide (H2O, D2O or DHO2) concentration. In argon atmosphere the kinetic isotope effect was found to be equal to alpha = WH2O/WD2O = 2.2 +/- 0.3. The alpha value decreases in H2O-D2O mixtures with increasing H2O concentration. In oxygen atmosphere the isotope effect is not observed (alpha = 1.05 +/- 0.10). It is assumed that the revealed isotope effect is related to the mechanism of water sonolysis including the H2O-Ar* and D2O-Ar* energy transition, where Ar* is an argon atom in an excited state, in nonequilibrium plasma generated by the shock-wave.     

Features of the magnetic state of the layered Fe-V nanostructure of the superconductor-ferromagnet type

The magnetic state of the V(39 nm)/20 [V(3 nm)/Fe(3 nm)] nanostructure has been investigated by polarized neutron reflectometry in the temperature range from 1.6 to 30 K in magnetic fields from 0.2 to 15 kOe. The data obtained indicate that the superconductivity of vanadium layers may affect magnetic ordering both over the depth of the structure and in its plane.     

Invariants of counterinteraction of femtosecond light pulses

In this paper, we obtain invariants of counterinteraction of femtosecond light pulses in a nonlinear medium. In the process of interaction, the harmonic amplitude at a frequency determined by the dispersion of nonlinear response of the medium oscillates along the propagation path with spatial frequency that is also determined by nonlinearity dispersion. The result obtained must be allowed for, in particular, during the computer modeling of interaction between counterpropagating light pulses. M. I. Lomonosov State University, Moscow, Russia. Polycapillary‐optics‐based micro‐XANES and micro‐EXAFS at a third‐generation bending‐magnet beamline

A focusing system based on a polycapillary half‐lens optic has been successfully tested for transmission and fluorescence µ‐X‐ray absorption spectroscopy at a third‐generation bending‐magnet beamline equipped with a non‐fixed‐exit Si(111) monochromator. The vertical positional variations of the X‐ray beam owing to the use of a non‐fixed‐exit monochromator were shown to pose only a limited problem by using the polycapillary optic. The expected height variation for an EXAFS scan around the Fe K‐edge is approximately 200 µm on the lens input side and this was reduced to ～1 µm for the focused beam. Beam sizes (FWHM) of 12–16 µm, transmission efficiencies of 25–45% and intensity gain factors, compared with the non‐focused beam, of about 2000 were obtained in the 7–14 keV energy range for an incoming beam of 0.5 × 2 mm (vertical × horizontal). As a practical application, an As K‐edge µ‐XANES study of cucumber root and hypocotyl was performed to determine the As oxidation state in the different plant parts and to identify a possible metabolic conversion by the plant.
