Elastic properties of monoclinic telluric acid ammonium phosphate,Te(OH)6·2NH4H2PO4·(NH4)2HPO4, near the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition

The elastic constants of Te(OH)₆·2NH₄H₂PO₄·(NH₄)₂HPO₄, TAAP, point symmetrym, have been measured by ultrasonic resonance methods passing through the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition at ca. 320 K. In the range between 273 and 340 K the elasticity tensor exhibits only a slight anisotropy. No discontinuity of the elastic constants is observed. However, some temperature derivatives of the elastic constants show slight anomalies within the range 310 to 325 K. The strongest effect occurs with the longitudinal elastic resistancec ₂₂. The thermal expansion which varies only slightly between 263 and 340 K, is highly anisotropic in contrast to the thermoelastic behaviour. A strong negative thermal expansion is observed in a direction within the mirror plane, ca. 45° apart from the direction of spontaneous polarization.This effect is not accompanied by a corresponding thermoelastic anomaly. The interactions connected with the transition are of the totally symmetric type. Like many other properties the elastic and thermoelastic behaviour of TAAP resembles that of triglycine sulphate (TGS). Larger differences between TAAP and TGS are found in the pressure dependence of various properties. For example the pressure dependence of the transition temperatureT is negative for TAAP (–3.8 K/kbar) and positive for TGS (3.9 K/kbar).Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H.E. Evidence for crossed Andreev reflection in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrid structures

We have measured the nonlocal resistance of aluminum-iron spin-valve structures fabricated by e-beam lithography and shadow evaporation. The sample geometry consists of an aluminum bar with two or more ferromagnetic wires forming point contacts to the aluminum at varying distances from each other. In the normal state of aluminum, we observe a spin-valve signal which allows us to control the relative orientation of the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic contacts. In the superconducting state, at low temperatures and excitation voltages well below the gap, we observe a spin-dependent nonlocal resistance which decays on a smaller length scale than the normal-state spin-valve signal. The sign, magnitude, and decay length of this signal are consistent with predictions made for crossed Andreev reflection.     

Multiple-beam X-ray interferometry for phase-contrast microtomography

The first successful operation of an X-ray interferometer under conditions of non-planar three-beam diffraction for phase-contrast X-ray microtomography is reported. Intrinsic phase differences of the reflections used cancel from the three-dimensional phase image of the specimen. With simultaneous hkl and hkl reflections of a synchrotron radiation beam in a side-by-side geometry, the size of the usable field of view is doubled and the investigated specimen volume is increased by a factor of four. As an example, the reconstructed slice of a mouse kidney is shown in phase contrast at 71 keV. Optimized choices of three-beam reflections and matching interferometer geometries useful for applications are presented.     

The relationship between crystal structure and NMR relaxation in molecular solids with tert-butyl groups

We correlate an X-ray determination of the molecular and crystal structures of 2-tert-butylanthracene and 2-tert-butylanthraquinone reported here with the previously reported dynamical nuclear magnetic resonance determination of the motions of the tert-butyl groups and their resident methyl groups in the solid state [P.A. Beckmann, K.S. Burbank, M.M.W. Lau, J.N. Ree, T.L. Weber, Chem. Phys. 290 (2003) 241].
