Possible mechanisms for degrading chloromethylmercury (CH(3)HgCl) and dimethylmercury [(CH3)2Hg] involving thiol and ammonium residues were investigated by DFT and atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM) calculations. Using H2S and HS- as models for thiol and thiolate groups RSH and RS-, respectively, we obtained transition states and energy barriers for possible decomposition routes to Hg(SH)2 based on a model proposed by Moore and Pitts (Moore, M. J.; Distefano, M. D.; Zydowsky, L. D.; Cummings, R. T.; Walsh, C. T. Acc. Chem. Res. 1990, 23, 301. Pitts, K. E.; Summers, A. O. Biochemistry 2002, 41, 10287). Demethylation was found to be a multistep process that involved initial substitution of Cl- by RS-. We found that successive coordination of Hg with thiolates leads to increased negative charge on the methyl group and facilitates the protonolysis of the Hg-C bond by H-SH. This was also found to be the case for (CH3)2Hg. We found that NH4(+) readily protonolyzes the Hg-C bond of these thiolate complexes, suggesting that ammonium residues of protonated amino acids might also act as effective proton donors. 相似文献
Thiamine dependent enzymes catalyze ligase and lyase reactions near a carbonyl moiety. Chemical models for these reactions serve as useful tools to substantiate a detailed mechanism of action. This tutorial review covers all such studies performed thus far, emphasizing the role of each part around the active site and the conformation of the cofactor during catalysis. 相似文献
Many informatics tools have emerged to process the voluminous and complex data generated by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The interpretation of fMRI exams is largely determined by these tools. However, their performance is hard to evaluate because there is no independent means of calibration. A novel fMRI calibration system called SmartPhantom has been developed to simulate functional blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) imaging. SmartPhantom contains a quadrature radio frequency coil, comprising two perpendicular planar loops that can be externally activated or deactivated. The system is able to produce reasonably uniform signal enhancements in a calibration sample surrounded by the two loops during an MRI scan. The enhancement is controlled well in both magnitude and predefined timing and produces BOLD-like signals. Characteristics of SmartPhantom are discussed in detail, followed by a comparison of fMRI informatics tools. Two fMRI data sets are acquired with the SmartPhantom. One with high signal-to-noise ratio provides the calibration. Another with lower SNR is input into three software packages (BrainVoyager, FSL and Statistical Parametric Mapping 2) for data preprocessing and statistical analysis. Results from the three packages are compared in both sensitivity of detecting the activation and correlation between the predicted activation and calibration. 相似文献
Immonium ions are commonly observed in the high energy fragmentation of peptide ions. In a MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometer, singly charged peptides photofragmented with 157 nm VUV light yield a copious abundance of immonium ions, especially those from aromatic residues. However, their intensities may vary from one peptide to another. In this work, the effect of varying amino acid position, peptide length, and peptide composition on immonium ion yield is investigated. Internal immonium ions are found to have the strongest intensity, whereas immonium ions arising from C-terminal residues are the weakest. Peptide length and competition among residues also strongly influence the immonium ion production. Quantum calculations provide insights about immonium ion structures and the fragment ion conformations that promote or inhibit immonium ion formation.
The challenging problem of estimating the dose delivered to heterogeneous products by radiation modalities of limited penetration can be readily handled by using technologies developed for, and widely used in, radiation therapy applications. In particular, combining CT scanning with radiation treatment planning programs can simulate radiation processing with either photons or electrons, and can provide detailed, high resolution and accurate dose maps for any arbitrary product and package configuration. Such dose maps are an essential part of process validation. Comparison of the simulated dose distributions with measured dose maps verifies the soundness of this approach. The present communication presents results obtained with the simulation technique for a variety of common food items which are likely candidates for radiation processing. 相似文献
Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to study the effect of silane headgroups on the molecular interactions that occur between poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and various epoxy silanes at the PET/silane and PET/silicone interfaces. Three different silanes were investigated: (3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (γ-GPS), (3-glycidoxypropyl) methyl-dimethoxysilane (γ-GPMS), and (3-glycidoxypropyl) dimethyl-methoxysilane (γ-GPDMS). These silanes share the same backbone and epoxy end group but have different headgroups. SFG was used to examine the interfaces between PET and each of these silanes, as well as silanes mixed with methylvinylsiloxanol (MVS). We also examined the interfaces between PET and uncured or cured silicone with silanes or silane-MVS mixtures. Silanes with different headgroups were found to exhibit a variety of methoxy group interfacial segregation and ordering behaviors at various interfaces. The effect of MVS was also dependent upon silane headgroup choice, and the interfacial molecular structures of silane methoxy headgroups were found to differ at PET/silane and PET/silicone interfaces. Epoxy silanes have been widely used as adhesion promoters for polymer adhesives; therefore, the molecular structures probed using SFG were correlated to adhesion testing results to understand the molecular mechanisms of silicone-polymer adhesion. Our results demonstrated that silane methoxy headgroups play important roles in adhesion at the PET/silicone interfaces. The presence of MVS can change interfacial methoxy segregation and ordering, leading to different adhesion strengths. 相似文献

A two-dimensional numerical model is used to study the nonlinear behavior of density gradients on transverse dispersion. Numerical
simulations are conducted using d3f, a computer code for simulation of density-dependent flow in porous media. Considering a density-stratified horizontal flow
in a heterogeneous porous media, a series of simulations is carried out to examine the effect of the density gradient on macro-scale
transverse dispersivity. Changing salt concentration significantly affects fluid properties. This physical behavior of the
fluid involves a non-linearity in modeling the interaction between salt and fresh water. It is concluded that the large-scale
transport properties for high density flow deviate significantly from the tracer case due to the spatial variation of permeability,
described by statistical parameters, at the local-scale. Indeed, the presence of vertical flow velocities induced by permeability
variations is responsible for the reduction of the mixing zone width in the steady state in the case of a high density gradient.
Uncertainties in the model simulations are studied in terms of discretization errors, boundary conditions, and convergence
of ensemble averaging. With respect to the results, the gravity number appears to be the controlling parameter for dispersive
flux. In addition, the applicability and limitations of the nonlinear model of Hassanizadeh (1990) and Hassanizadeh and Leijnse
(1995) (Adv Water Resour 18(4):203–215, 1995) in heterogeneous porous media are investigated. We found that the main cause
of the nonlinear behavior of dispersion, which is the interaction between density contrast and vertical velocity, needs to
be explicitly accounted for in a macro-scale model. 相似文献
Endgame studies have long served as a tool for testing human creativity and intelligence. We find that they can serve as a tool for testing machine ability as well. Two of the leading chess engines, Stockfish and Leela Chess Zero (LCZero), employ significantly different methods during play. We use Plaskett’s Puzzle, a famous endgame study from the late 1970s, to compare the two engines. Our experiments show that Stockfish outperforms LCZero on the puzzle. We examine the algorithmic differences between the engines and use our observations as a basis for carefully interpreting the test results. Drawing inspiration from how humans solve chess problems, we ask whether machines can possess a form of imagination. On the theoretical side, we describe how Bellman’s equation may be applied to optimize the probability of winning. To conclude, we discuss the implications of our work on artificial intelligence (AI) and artificial general intelligence (AGI), suggesting possible avenues for future research. 相似文献
