Estimating functions of canonical correlation coefficients

Let ρ²₁,…,ρ²_p be the squares of the population canonical correlation coefficients from a normal distribution. This paper is concerned with the estimation of the parameters δ₁,…,δ_p, where $\text{δ}{}_{\mathrm{i}}\text{=}\text{ρ}{}^2{}_{\mathrm{i}}\text{(1 ? ρ}{}^2{}_{\mathrm{i}}\text{)}$, i = 1,…,p, in a decision theoretic way. The approach taken is to estimate a parameter matrix Δ whose eigenvalues are δ₁,…,δ_p, given a random matrix F whose eigenvalues have the same distribution as $\text{r}{}^2{}_{\mathrm{i}}\text{(1 ? r}{}^2{}_{\mathrm{i}}\text{)}$, i = 1,…,p, where r₁,…,r_p are the sample canonical correlation coefficients.     

Bonding in uranium oxides: The role of 5f electrons

X-ray photoemission spectra of valence and bonding bands of UO₂, U₃O₈ and UO₃ are presented. The gradual transfer of localized 5f electrons into the bonding band as a function of oxygen content has been studied in these oxides.     

On the momentum distribution in Bose fluids

We comment on some properties of the momentum distribution in an interacting Bose fluid and its relation to the average kinetic energy per particle within the hypernetted chain approach.     

Fatty acids. VII. The gas-liquid chromatographic properties of all dimethylene interrupted methyl cis,cis-octadecadienoates.

The gas-liquid chromatographic behaviour of all the dimethylene interrupted methyl cis,cis-octadecadienoates was studied on polar (Carbowax 20M, FFAP, DEGA, DEGS and Silar 10C), semi-polar (XE-60) and non-polar (SE-30, OV-101 and Apiezon L) stationary phases. The equivalent chain length of each isomer is recorded; the possibility of separation and the retention pattern of these isomers are discussed.     

Bounds for the expectation of the kth root of a random variable

Exact bounds for the mean value of a fractional moment, such as the sample standard deviation, are considered. These bounds are compared with those found by summation techniques applied to computer extended series. An expansion involving an arbitrary parameter is introduced, and now best bounds are found by optimization. There are applications to bounds for a certain class of quadrature problem.     

Far-infrared microbolometer detectors

The bismuth microbolometer is a simple, easily made detector suitable for use throughout the far-infrared, which has been integrated with a variety of planar antennas. The general thermal properties of these devices and some of the constraints on bolometer materials are discussed.
