Cellulosic nanoparticles from alfa fibers (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Stipa tenacissima)</Emphasis>: extraction procedures and reinforcement potential in polymer nanocomposites

The microstructure and chemical composition of alfa (Stipa tenacissima) were investigated. The polysaccharide and lignin contents were around 70 and 20 wt%, respectively. From the bleached and delignified fibers, two types of nanosized cellulosic particles were extracted, namely cellulose nanocrystals and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). The former correspond typically to the elementary crystallite units of the cellulose fibers, with a rod-like morphology and an aspect ratio of about 20. The latter, mechanically disintegrated from oxidized bleached fibres, presents an entangled fibrillar structure with widths in the range 5-20 nm. The reinforcing potential of the ensuing nanoparticles was investigated by casting a mixture of acrylic latex and aqueous dispersion of cellulose nanoparticles. Thermo-mechanical analysis revealed a huge enhancement of the stiffness above the glass transition of the matrix. Significant differences in the mechanical reinforcing capability of the nanoparticles were reported.     

Deflagration-to-detonation transition process for spherical aluminum dust/epoxypropane mist/air mixtures in a large-scale experimental tube

The deflagration-to-detonation transitions (DDTs) for clouds of spherical aluminum dust (SAD) mixed with air or epoxypropane mist (EPM) and air were investigated in a 29.6-m-long experimental tube of 199 mm in diameter. The clouds formed through the injection of SAD and SAD/liquid epoxypropane samples into the experimental tube. Explosions of the SAD/air mixture were initiated using a 7-m-long EPM/air cloud explosion ignited by a 40-J electric spark. Explosions in SAD/EPM/air clouds were initiated using a 1...     

Synthesis of 4-Benzidinyl Butyric Acid: A Key Intermediate for Antibodies Production Against Benzidin

a four-step synthesis of monoalkylated benzidin is reported for immunogen preparation against benzidin dye. Use of 10% H₂SO₄/ dioxan for N-Boc cleavage avoids the cyclisation of 4-benzidinyl butyric acid into the corresponding lactam observed with the classical TFA/ CH₂Cl₂ system.     

Potassium Fluoride on Alumina: Condensation of 1,4-Diacetylpiperazine-2,5-Dione with Aldehydes. Dry Condensation Under Microwave Irradiation. Synthesis of Albonursin and Analogues

1,4-Diacetylpiperazine-2,5-dione (1) was condensated with aldehydes (2) with KF on alumina without solvent under microwaves or in at room temperature in the presence of DMF. The reaction was stereoselective and some natural products (4a-c) like albonursin(4c) were synthesized.     

Lower bound for the ratios of eigenvalues of Schrödinger with nonpositive single‐barrier potentials

Horváth and Kiss (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 2005) proved the upper bound estimate for Dirichlet eigenvalue ratios of the Schrödinger problem ?y^′′ + q(x)y = λy with nonnegative and single‐well potential q. In this paper, we prove that if q(x) is a nonpositive, continuous, and single‐barrier potential, then for λ_n > λ_m≥ ? 2q^?, where . In particular, if q(x) satisfies the additional condition , then λ₁ > 0 and for n > m ≥ 1. For this result, we develop a new approach to study the monotonicity of the modified Prüfer angle function.
